Nice job Mark. You didn't forget the star nut, you did it just right. I like your tool, i used a bunch of washers and an old top cap bolt. To put on the crown race people use pvc pipe. I can't remember what i used. Also note, cutting the fork requires the cut to be below the marked line, as the topcap needs to push down directly on the spacers so that the load is on the stem and not on the actual steerer tube (top part of fork). You did it right but didn't mention it so people may have missed that. My install took way longer because i changed the cups and bearings, don't get me started...but i did use a nice home made tool for that. Many file the cut fork, i used steel wool, and a hacksaw using the old stem i replaced to guide the saw lol. I am also paranoid about cutting and filing metal near where i fix my bike because i don't want hidden filings to get into my tires. Putting a fork on and juggling everything is really a pain, which you did easily - I attribute this to your parts tray. I put on a hydraulic brake so I'm glad i didn't have a cable that was inside any fork fittings like you had. I also left the fork a little long so i can juggle the spacers to give me some flexibility on moving the stem/handle bars. I think your fork removal may have been stubborn because the grease was old or there was some rust. My wife's steerer was like that. My silver TK coil fork is cheaper than your nice Judy. It looks great. I went from a fixed fork so any rockshox is a great improvement. And the 2nd fork i had to cut was way more expensive so it was good to cut my teeth on a cheaper fork. Nice job and props for the bike and parts stand! :-)

@spiffpilot25894 жыл бұрын
Nice video! The brake cable is supposed to be routed on the inside. It may seem like it could go into the spokes that way but it won’t. Inside the fork leg is correct. Also, to install a crown race without the actual tool, don’t use a screwdriver - you could damage the race itself. You had a block of wood there you used for other things - use the edge of that block of wood instead of the screwdriver, but in the same manner. Hammer on the block of wood all around the race evenly until it is set. Wood is softer than metal so it won’t damage it, but is hard enough to be hammered on and transfer the force.

@soulsurfer87974 жыл бұрын
If you are located in SoCal, then the fork may have been seized in the head tube from salt oxidation in the air and wet rides that allows water/debris into the area. I ride along the coast and had that issues years ago on my road bike. Make sure it is seated properly too as improper seating will also allow for a less occlusive fit which causes this too by letting in water/debris.

If you don't have the tool for the crown race, then a piece of wood works very well as it's soft and won't damage the soft metal like a hardened screwdriver might, just make sure one side isn't moving too much more than the others at any time.

if the crown race gets stuck before it slides all the way down onto the steerer tube , just cut a slot all the way through the crown race with a hacksaw and it will push on easily , also means you can install / remove without using force - saves bashing it with a hammer and damaging shit - many crown races today come as split rings anyway
@stat1cghost4 жыл бұрын

Thanks for doing this video and documenting your install, and congratulations on success! I believe you mentioned needing a pipe to get that one part(I think the crown) on, and I've seen others use a piece of PVC to get those on. Nevertheless, the screwdriver & hammer got 'er done. Enjoy.

You know, awesome edit man. I was looking for exactly this. I wanted to replace a Suntour with a Judy on my average ordinary base priced bike shop bike, in this case a Felt, wand I wanted to know if anyone else out there was making that basic upgrade and how hard it would be. You delivered perfectly ;-) By the way, if you keep a basic brass drift around the shop, you can smack that with a hammer and whatever you steel bit you are driving will dent the drift instead of destroying itself.

Nice job. Good overview of what might be involved. One thing though, I think the reason the brake cable was routed behind and toward the inside of the fork leg on the old fork was to avoid any twigs or other unwanted things catching hold of your exposed cable on the outside and causing a crash or damage to your cable, brakes, wheel, or even your fork.---Perhaps a safety hazard. You might want to route that cable back behind and inside the fork leg. Again...great job.
@pympin873 жыл бұрын
and a trick to set the crown race without the tool ... just assemble the headset and snug up the top cap bolt and it will pull the fork up into the race ... if it's still not set remove the bolt put the cap back on the stem and hit it with a soft faced hammer until it's set

I don't know never installed a bike fork but I would have temporarily installed the bottom race, bearing and fork to the frame and then hit the fork from the bottom up till the race is flush.
