In the desert use passive solar for sure. Reposition the trailer with nose facing west so the whole thing doesn't get blasted.

Genius! I think I'd do something like this if I had it to do over again. I never really wanted a "structure" either, so we just did without. AND BAKED! Great job. Also, great flow to the video, and excellent cinematography. You've got a real knack for that.

I wish you would see the big picture that winter is coming too and every animal out there is going to try to get underground.........and we are just classy 2 footed animals with a soul. So.........make it the call of the mild to avoid the call of the wild. You can pick out a steep hill on your property and dig in to get partially underground and go for a masonry basement. It's like a dug out hillside with northern exposure and a two sided retaining wall. You get the airstream nested in there and build the house foundation above on the hill. So you are building things one time. The high winds can blow over the dugout area and you have that problem defeated. Where is your finest view? Where is nice slope with northern exposure? In the Rockies or in cold country everyone wants southern exposure but to beat the heat it's opposite. Your property looks to have excellent features with height variations and many people don't get that and are stuck in flatville. Think like a badger........or where would a bighorn sheep like to lay down and spy out for predators far off in the distance? Think basement for Adobe effect and the cheapest basement is a dugout hillside because it cannot flood. Then that basement becomes your cold cellar for storing canned food. Everything you do changes to another better purpose later on. The badger gets underground real fast. The bighorn sheep can't dig at all but they climb up high and find shade. You can be buddies with all the newbe desert dwellers but you can't learn from them much like you can by observing the animals.

Recommend rectangle sails. Triangle sails provide very little shade overall. Consider a permeable shade that runs from your outer poles Connect them to these poles and secure them to the ground. Provides a windbreak and afternoon shading.

Good luck with your build what ever it will be. Also, hottest times where you are at are probably now until early July when the monsoons hit. Fire season is also now until early July when the rains come. You are in a great area and I have found the people in your area to be very friendly. I live in San Diego but visit that area 3-4 times a year. Best of luck to you and your family on this new adventure.

I just love the look and feel of your videos! We were thinking how nice it is to have a big family when it comes to tackling projects like this. I think Jonathan is on the right track when it comes to having a steeper pitch to the sails. You'll sacrifice some of your views but gain valuable shade. 😃

Hey! We have a little 22FB. Got here reviewing an IG #coolarooshadesail posting we tagged awhile back. The Warn Pullzall. For us it finally evolved into having a pair of eye anchors at each post, the additional one for tensioning/shortening with the pullzall, it's really a timesaver, lets' you go much higher with larger shade sails, and preserves that manual adjustment you always need as time goes by.

How hot will it get there this summer? It looks brutal already! I'm sure you'll appreciate any relief the shade sails will provide!
@TinyShinyHome4 жыл бұрын
We’ve not been here in the summer but our neighbors said it wouldn’t be above 100 more than a few days. We’ve already had one week of high 90s and reached 100 once. At least it cools off in the evenings. :)

what about covering the airstream like you did the wheels and tires? It'll mess with the shiny... but you're basically a giant sun-catcher (which works for the solar...) but also makes it a giant oven... just a thought. BTW, I love that you let us watch the good the bad and the ugly. Thank you. I found you from the visit from My Little Homestead.

We plan on building a shelter for the Airstream in the near(ish) future:)
@____58374 жыл бұрын
If you need any extra shade, I would tie some tarps to the top of the poles near the airstream, and tie the other sides to anything you can on the roof of the airstream itself without blocking solar too much. Would make it harder to move the airstream out when you want to though
@TinyShinyHome4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. We want to keep it fairly easy to move whenever we get the itch to travel. But if we get desperate that’s always an option:)

The sails look great! Since you're at a higher elevation, do things at least cool off a bit at night?
@TinyShinyHome4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Which is a big reason we wanted to be in this area. Right now we’re enjoying nights in the 40s and 50s! We live for that evening cool down:)

@@TinyShinyHome After monsoon season anyway. If not keeping the root bulb moist will become your new job. My wife and I planted trees one time in June and it was an exhausting chore watering them all by hauling water. They all died. Gravity feed drip systems are your friends when you live off grid. They are inexpensive and less time consuming. Then mulch heavily. I place my drip tubes under my mulch and just check the moisture from time to time.

You may be better off moving your solar panels off the Airstream, then you can fully shade that Tiny Shiny Home. But I’m sure you’ve already thought about that. Keep on keeping-on. 👍👍
@TinyShinyHome4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we can’t do that because we still want to travel and it would be a pain to take them off, put them back, etc. this will work just fine for now.
