May the solar system work its magic for your families business. Glad to see you covered up more because of the bright sun. Please don't burn that skin of yours. We will miss you at the saw if you do. Stay safe and tell grandfather to be careful on the roof.
@Jake12220
@Jake12220 2 жыл бұрын
Many people really misunderstand how the sun damages skin. Getting constant high exposure is relatively low risk, its intermittent high exposure that leads to burning and skin cancers. Mind you Emeralds mum has a great tan yet was still clearly getting burnt(likely due to the added reflectivity of the roofing) so sometimes its a good idea to cover up. Here in Australia l live close to the area with the highest skin cancer risk in the world so we are more than a little familiar with them. But it's rarely people that consistently work outside that have issues with it, its people that go out and get sunburnt from the occasional fishing trip or day at the beach that end up under the knife.

Hi Emerald, free cheap idea, to protect your new solar panel array (first of bad news, it only takes one bad hail storm to destroy all your work) good news, by videotaping all the construction on the panels, I am sure your grandpa can design a plywood cover, that can be swiftly activated by just pulling on a cord and covering your solar panels, with some cheap plywood, so when you see the storm coming or bad weather coming, just pull on the cord and cover your solar panels with plywood as a protective cover, does not have to be very thick just a cheap method of protecting your investment. PS, stay Gucci
@Jake12220
@Jake12220 2 жыл бұрын
Its a good idea, though hail storms equal cheap solar panels in Australia, the reason being that if one or two panels are damaged the insurance companies often pay to replace them all(there is actually a reason for this). So the second hand market for perfectly good panels is swamped. Sadly a lot of perfectly good panels end up in landfill or just sitting around in people's sheds, but after our last big hail storm you could buy enough panels to run a house for only a few hundred dollars. Then of course there is the cost of the inverter, batteries, wiring ect, but its still pretty cheap. I actually wonder how much solar we use, officially Australia already has the highest production of rooftop solar energy in the world and the highest solar energy production per capita, but we also use a lot that wouldn't be added to the government statistics because its not part of the grid. Once batteries drop in price a little more l cant see why a lot of the population would bother to stay on grid, we have relatively cheap power by world standards, but grid connect fees are a pain because we are so spread out outside of the major urban zones.
@jcmort8
@jcmort8 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent idea, you may want to consider Lexan (polycarbonate) instead of plywood, It would be considerably lighter and thus easier to handle, UV stable forms would probably out last plywood several times over, and you would actually still get some juice out of the panels. It does cost a bit more than plywood, but I would think the benefits would out weigh the difference.

Going by other comments, it seems there was power in the area previously, but its no longer grid connected. Thus why there are power lines in the background of some shots, but they couldn't connect. Solar is certainly a better option than a generator backup, though a generator can be a good backup to the solar. lm in Australia and after the last power bill lm more seriously considering going full off grid. The cost of my power usage lm ok with, but the fee just to be connected to the grid keeps getting higher. Putting in solar is cheap enough here, the problem is having enough battery backup.

Panels facing exactly due south.. Some small claim can be made that there is more direct sun before 12 noon,, than after,, afternoon clouds,, So a 5 degree east of south orientation would be normal. And the angle of the collectors should be equal to the latitude of the installation. Your lattitude is a nominal 41 degrees north. If in roof rise over run pitch that would be a 10.5/12 pitch roof angle. A greater efficiency can be achieved if you don't mind adjusting the angle of your panels a bit seasonally. In the cold weather say October to March make the panels steeper, still facing true south to approximately a 15/12 pitch 51 degrees,,, in the warm weather, a flatter angle say a 7/12 pitch about 30 degrees. The true south facing is important. The steeper angle for the winter months increases efficiency,,, it also reduces the snow or ice accumulations. Watching the video a second time,,, I think you are pretty close to spot on,,, and,, might that rig be adjustable summer to winter angles ?,, You're goooood.

@@davewmck Laughing,, yeah, sure,, There is actually a way to do it without math. For that location any vertical pole at a few minutes around noon time the shadow will point pretty much exactly north. For the best angle,, take a square,, carpenter's framing square? one leg on the panel on that north south line,, and adjust the panel until there is no shadow from the leg sticking up. Perfect south,, perfect angle. No math. Laughing,, count yourself as lucky. I AM a nerd. I can quote that location to the degree, minute and second of location... But in truth,, this is a horse shoe and hand grenades sort of equation,,,, just get it close. It will work fine. Orrr do it the really technical way,, I have often,,. Stand directly at the center of your panel and adjust it, the east/west line, so the shadow of your head is right in the middle,, and then adjust the angle so that the sun reflects right into your eyes. Works every time.

I'm sure your grampa knows that wind can pick up speed/force when it blows accross a roof,it compresses and gains energy,so a 50mph wind might be 55 or 60mph when it hits the sail,I mean panels. Surely he took that into account and it is all anchored beyond recommended specs.
@Jake12220
@Jake12220 2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely worth considering, the effects as the wind bends over the building can be severe. That said he looks to have done a great job. If you look at the footage or even just the image before playing the clip you can see he has built the mountings like roof trusses, double bolted, roof strapping and heavier timber than it likely needs. The aluminium isn't likely to be an issue so the only bit lm not sure about is if he used enough mounting bolts to secure the panels to the rails. Given how well he put the rest of it together lm guessing he would have, but like any system nature will always find the weakest link, but l fully expected this setup will still be there till they decide to upgrade one day in years to come.
