The “typical” flu virus in the US kills an average of 34,200 people every year. It hospitalizes 200,000, and there were 31.4 million confirmed cases for the 2018/19 flu season. When compared to the norm, there’s really no need to panic.

Buildin' Whatever yes, but there is a difference. The typical flu is a viral infection already being around for ages and modern humans have developed an immune system to it. The covid is new and we are not ready for that. Think of the flue for the natives in America. So, overreaction? We will see. In the mean time I don’t think you would expose to this virus so lightly, wouldn’t you?

I built two Cobra 427 kit cars and used the manifold heat wrap to help with engine room heat. The heat you eliminate in the engine room will be moved to the exhaust stack and it will get almost red hot under heavy loads. You must cover it soon or you will create a nasty spot on deck where severe burns are likely. The side pipes om my Cobras got so hot that I eventually took the wrap off. Enjoy your work ethic. It's a lot like mine in that getting the job done is more important than making everything beautiful when it isn't necessary.

You have done a great job with the exhaust, what a difference in space-saving between the new dry exhaust and the old wet exhaust. I believe your joint combined with the RTV and exhaust wrap will go the distance. I have rigged cars and motorcycles with similar joints and I have never had any significant leaks, and they never broke. I would triple-wrap your muffler all the way to the roof, It will significantly reduce the noise it makes. I also think a shroud would be a prudent addon.

Thank you for the great videos Stu. Just wanted to chime in. I grew up on the water in the Bay of Fundy, and have watched the old man fix a lot of old wooden hulled boats. The exhaust pipes on the diesels were always completely wrapped. Right from the manifold all the way to where the pipe went up through the ceiling in the wheel house. As a kid being thrown around in rough seas I remember hugging the muffler to stop from being tossed around. It felt only warm to the touch, probably wrapped in asbestos considering it was used for everything back in the day. Just wanted to point out that muffler is going to get hot under full power, and someone will grab that thing. Love the project build. A lot of the exhausts had a flex pipe from the vertical piece to the horizontal piece and lasted well over 10 years. Hope this helps. All the very best to you.

Stu, think about removing that circular clamp where the exhaust goes through the deck. You've got the exhaust well supported below deck, and all the deck clamp does is restrict the movement of the exhaust as the engine moves and vibrates, placing a strain on the joints in your exhaust piping. I also think you have your flex joint on the wrong end of the muffler. Consider putting it at the bottom of the muffler, closer to the engine, where the vibration and movement is. I very much enjoy your videos.

Hi Stew, Mate, you have gone this far with a beautiful engine build. If your just wanting to fire the old girl up and go for a shake down spin, fine, but if it was me, I would redirect the exhaust totally.. Re do ur bends and flex joints below deck and send a straight run to the side of the wheel house. Get the muffler away from the cabin door. In that way, u have somewhere to attach a vert muffler shroud plus it would be safer when the boat is rocking and rolling. By having a longer flex joint down below you reduce the chance of the joints cracking with vibration. Anyway, just a suggestion. Thanks for your videos

Keep up the good work. For an easy exhaust tip, cut about 6 in off the end of your pipe at 45 degrees and weld it back on giving a 90 degree tip.

I think you’ve done a great job Stu, working out straight pipe and flexible joins to get it to fit is hard to do, and one mis cut can ruin a lot of expensive pipe. Wrapping it in 3 layers of fibreglass tape means less burnt arms and elbows in a small engine room. I agree with what Brupeg did and put a heat shielding around the exposed stack, but that’s just an idea for another video. 👍👍

Hey Stu, maybe talk to your local exhaust guy about this, but I always thought that your flex pipe is supposed to go over your steel pipe so that the end of the seal-clamp and the end of the steel pipe are at the same point, and then your seal-clamp squash's the flex onto the steel pipe. Also there will be a 'rule of thumb' measurement of how long your flex pipe should be. ie; 3 or 4 times the diameter. The amount you have there may as well be a welded joint. Thanks for the vid, stay safe!!
@DangarMarine4 жыл бұрын

@@DangarMarine With as many modified cars running solid intercooler piping and only a V-band clamp(they allow only like 5-10 degrees of flex IIRC) you should be fine with something similar. Boats and farming have a lot in common. You do the best you can with what’s available at the moment. I’ve worked in both industries. That said I think you might regret not building a shroud around the muffler. Particularly since you could inexpensively fabricate it in your shop and then bring it out to the boat. It’s 4-6 bolts welded to the cabin and some extruded steel bent to shape. Even the dodgiest boats I worked as a kid had protection around the exhaust pipe when it was a dry exhaust like yours. Hope I don’t seem to negative as I really look forward to your video’s from the snow covered N prairie we’re cheering for you.

aluminum foil under the band clamps will stop the leaks. usually they come with foil when you buy them. The flex pipe will fit over your solid pipe and you use a u clamp to hold it on. That is what the bracket under the exhaust on the engine is for . the flex pipe is like a big thread it can be turned or twisted a small amount to make the opening bigger.

As it is you will be getting water into your engine. Flex pipe is dual purpose, it allows for the vibration/flexing of the engine, but it also allows for water to drip out of the pipe through the flex. You would be surprised how much water makes its way down a stack. Until you get a flapper cap on it, make sure to put a bucket over the dual stacks you have now.
