Installing the GM Trailer Camera on my 40' 5th Wheel

Installing the GM accessory Trailer Camera setup on my 5th Wheel Trailer . This is pulled by my 2022 Chevy 3500 High Country Duramax

I have used this exact camera for the back of my horse trailer for the past 3 years. It works excellent and is simple to install.My trailer is about 36’ long and there is plenty of extra cable/wire. I have mine mounted on the hay rack storage on the top of our trailer and it gives me a very wide view of who is behind me, etc. Also the instructions recommend NOT running these cables under the trailer. I have my cable on the roof and used isopropyl alcohol to clean where each adhesive cable holder is applied to the roof. The cable runs through the clips (adhesive with zip ties) and down the length of the roof and down the side of the gooseneck and under. The excess is held with the “giant” zip ties. The transparent mode has to be on the back of the truck not the back of the trailer. You have to pick one way to install.

So I have used this camera system with my 26ft travel trailer and it worked perfectly as advertised. When I got my 34 ft 5th wheel it did not work. What I ended up doing was manipulating the numbers to fit in to the parameters the manual called for. I then drove it to calibrate it and it worked. I did set up a different profile to test this out, however I ultimately just went back to using it as a back camera without the trailer vision feature. Just figured as long as I can see what’s behind me I’m good. The new HD GMCs they are coming up with is “supposed” to have the ability to work with longer trailers. We will see. GMC makes a lot of promises they haven’t been keeping it seems.

I kept trying to make a new trailer but it never asked me the length or anything. good to know. I saw that on the 2024's , definitely curious to see how that plays out.

@@americanduramax okay, don’t do it as a 5th Wheel but as a travel trailer. You have to trick in to believing you are pulling something shorter. So manipulate the measurements .

@@thomasroseman575 no, I did not find that it confusing at all. It helped to see what was behind be and side view mirrors In combination with these cameras just provided additional situational awareness of surroundings in my humble opinion.

​@@Ren_O_72 but your trailer is longer .when in transparent mode your a few feet longer in reality than what you see. I have a 42 ft rv. Don't you think it will be really off ten ft longer? I guess I will try it I also have spare tire that I think be obstruct the view.

You can fish it through the bottom of the tail gate.

yeah they should have mirrored the 5th wheel connections with the camers........2 separate connections.....1 inside the bed and 1 outside, like you said they could have pig tailed easily and threw another camera connection inside the bed......i just bought this truck

Yeah agree'd, makes no sense why they did it this way. I will have a video soon. i have had the parts for months now on how to swap the bed plug and extend the wires

You can relocate the 7 pin from the bumper to the bed

I was looking at another video. He was saying had to do a download. Doesn't tell you anywhere to do that. The drive straight no turns for like 5minutes then he could set it up but on travel trailer only and fool into with shorter measurements. By the way I was thinking of putting that diamond plate type stuff on mine. Did you do it yourself. Or was it there when you bought iy

Thanks buddy. Never heard of downloading a software or even where to download that at. I purchased my trailer with all the diamond plate on it so i have no idea where to get that stuff or how to modify it lol

Why wouldn't you put the bolts in from the outside?🥴

because then they would be on the ramp and would mess with anything you roll up an down it.

Nick, I have same setup for my truck not installed yet because not to crazy about the wire routing, my buddy has a wireless setup on his truck, but I don’t know if it’s compatible with the stock camera, once again GM dropped the ball on this one 🤔

Yeah the wiring is annoying especially because of the camera connection placement. I need to look but i know they made some changes on the 2024 models and may have changed this since now the 2024's can see thru 5th wheels with no problems like what i was trying to accomplish on my truck. idk what technology changed to make it work with trailers in excess of 32' but they got 5th wheels added now.

I have the 2024, bought the camera system specifically for the 2024 I just haven't pulled the trigger because they want it mounted right smack in the middle of my 40' toy hauler's ramp. I'd probably consider running the wiring down the ramp exterior with some wire mold and then under the trailer and up through the battery bay or LP bay to the kingpin. I've seen the camera also mounted with heavy duty 3M two sided adhesive. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

If you don't know what you are doing, why are you posting this video? Maybe read the instructions before you install it and record a video of you obviously no knowing what your doing. Waste of time watching this video.

You’re obviously missing the point. The camera is not supposed to work on this size of trailer for the transparent view function. Some people have claimed that they have been able to work around this, but I have not seen anyone prove a way to do it On 20-23 models Either way, no one‘s making you watch the video. If this upset you that much, you can just move on. Outside of transparent camera, there is not anything I did not know…
