Installing the JD Jetting EFI Tuner on a Honda CRF 450L (JD Jetting Power Surge 6X)

The Honda CRF450L (and the Honda CRF450RL) is well known for being a little bit twitchy off the line, when going from off idle into the throttle. After riding a friends bike who had installed the JD Jetting EFI tuner (JD Jetting Power Surge 6X Fuel Injection Tuner), I became a believer. Sure, I know doing the full vortex ECU replacement, adding aftermarket exhaust, and a number of other modifications will smooth things out and 'wake up' the bike even more, but at the expense of fuel economy and my wallet. Since my kind of riding requires some pretty good fuel range, I didn't want to lose too much in the way of mpg. The JD Jetting tuner is also much more economical, at around $200, versus the Vortex ECU which goes for over $700.

Installation of the JD Jetting EFI Tuner "Power Surge 6x" is very straightforward on the 450L (only takes about 30 minutes) and the difference over stock is definitely noticeable. It took a little bit to dial in my preferred settings, but it was well worth it. And I am pleased with the results. The bike is significantly less jumpy off the line and much easier to ride in tight trails and trees. I didn't really have much of an issue with surging or stalling to begin with, but the idle is much stronger now and the bike feels 'happier' overall.
My current settings are as follows:
1 - Green: 4
2 - Yellow (orange): 4
3 - Red: 4
4 - Green/Blue: 4/5
5 - Yellow/Blue: 4/5
6 - Red/Blue: 3

Thanks for the great video. I installed my JD Jetting tuner today and it works great. I have the 2022 CRF450RL and I used your settings, This thing blows wheels in all 3 gears, 1-3. But most importantly the throttle is much better. Its Tamed right down and not jerky at all. You don't need the Vortex. This tuner solves the problem with the jerky throttle and gets ride of flame outs. At 285.00 CDN and it was here in less then 3 weeks. Once again Great Video and explanation, thumbs up.

Looking to get the jd jetting instead of the vortex since obviously it is a lot cheaper. How do you feel since u install?

Love it. Just got back from 9 days in baja. Rode a friend's CRF without it - Ug! Rode another one with full vortex and exhuast - didn't notice much difference (except the sound). I'm totally satisfied, but I'm a lot less picky then most. YMMV.

Still running it. I enjoyed playing with the settings for a few weeks, making random tweaks to see what happens - but the settings I have posted in the blog work great and eventually I moved the unit under my seat to be safe and out of the way and haven't really thought about it since. Done all kinds of riding from tight technical trails to wide open gravel - the JD Tuner has met my needs and expectations.

Will the ECU adjust automatically with the JDJetting device for different altitudes?

Yes. The JD just intercepts the ECU signal and assists it. Doesn't replace it. So the same altitude adjustments the ECU is always doing continues to happen.

How much did your gas mileage go down after the jd?

With the settings I have, I haven't noticed any difference in fuel economy. It's very minor, if anything.

What altitude do you run this in? I was wondering if altitude plays a difference in settings also. Most of my riding is between 4.5k and 7.5k feet

I'm at sea level to about 4,000 ft. I'm not sure about changing settings for higher elevations as the fuel injection system should automatically adjust for altitude. But I feel settings vary a bit from person to person and bike to bike, so I would encourage trying different ones till you find what you like. At least, that's what I did.

Using your settings do you still have any popping on deceleration?

None at all. I only had occasional popping on decel before the mod (I've heard it can be worse for others, not sure why - but my bike wasn't popping much stock). And I haven't experienced any decel popping once I added the JD unit. The improvement overall is really really good in my opinion. But I imagine it varies from bike to bike and rider to rider.

Get rid of the PAIR valve. That’s the cause of a lot of decel pop. Even if you don’t desmog anything else, ditch that valve!

Once the PAIR stops working properly(and they always do), it will cause a lot of decel pop.

@@mattf5630i ran a jd tuner for awhile without an exhaust and had no popping and now with exhaust i have popping no matter how much i play with it and it runs great, no hot.
