I love the cages! Nice and roomy. I am glad you said what you did about the rabbits feet not having issues because of the cage bottom. To many people thing the rabbits pads are being cut off from the wire. It helps that you have coated wire, and I think it's important to make note of that. Plain wire will rust, which can cause issues. and galvanized will have a build up on them. Coated wire is the best way to go with the rabbit condos. Great video as always!

Deep South Homestead Please don’t use wire-bottomed cages on rabbits. It damaged their feet and the space is too little. If u really want a rabbit, get it spayed/neutered and free-roam it.

Deep South Homestead Yeah I figured... which is cruel. Rabbits are considered pets, not food. We don’t go around eating cats or dogs so why should rabbit be different? But I also understand your view and it’s not my job to decide what you do.

You've got real skills!!! I've found that whether it's animals or plants in the garden, ease of availability of nutrients makes a huge difference in the end results. Feeding fodder to your rabbits would really boost their nutrition and using worms to break down the waste would give your garden that black gold that makes them grow into giant producers. I use worms to make garden gold as well as worm casting tea, enough for my use and sell the rest ... I've had such good success that I could triple production and still not fill all the demand. Great set up you've got, but rabbits, in my opinion need outside housing, but I'll be watching your future videos. Thanks for the video

I've been watching your videos and wanted to say that I love the fact that you provide lots of space to your animals! Most people who produce their own animals for food have the very minimum space for the animals. The doe and buck cages are big! Your rabbit grow out pen is huge (smart idea using a trampoline!) Live how you added fake trees for your pheasants, it's cute! Your chickens were very helpful with that fencing! So yeah just wanted to say you rock. And I giggle EVERY TIME you say buzz buzz :)

The reason I suggest that it would be easier to clean out from under them and as you get older you will have a harder time with the knees and back. You do such wonderful things working with what you have, making it work.

Here is a tip for rabbit poo clean up if you can place some sort of holder under the pens and place the inexpensive foil roaster pans under them the poo drops in you can lift them out and dump them in the garden , no shoveling or scrapping. Just some lime sprinkled in.

@jasper777777
@jasper777777 8 жыл бұрын
Bailarsonsa I beg to differ. You can ask people who work at a rabbit rescue, rabbits with dirty feet, sore hock, badly damaged feet often come from people who kept rabbits on a solid surface that didn't breath, got dirty and wet. Best surface really would be a dry layer of straw, over top off that thick/thick wire, because it would be so dry and soft.
@TravelersGarden_dgdr
@TravelersGarden_dgdr 8 жыл бұрын
Well, that the ground should be kept clean & dry is obvious. But straw it no the best (but of course better than wire), grass is...natural ground is. Also the cages are way too small...there is no doubt about that.
@jasper777777
@jasper777777 8 жыл бұрын
Bailarsonsa They cages are too small. They are meat rabbit breeders who are doing it better than a lot of meat rabbit breeders do though. It would be nice if they had giant exercise pens outside on grass so they could run around in the grass. Maybe they do.

Well, I´m not really the type, who says "good job" to people, who do only the "lesser evil". Even if they only have them for meat, they´re still creatures who want a proper life...and I think, when we take their life at some point, we should respect what they need to be happy till their end. He did quite a good job with his chickens (but still a little too small space), don´t get why he treats his rabbits that much worse.

They stand on the wire, the cages are WAY too small (in my country those small cages are considered animal abuse), they are separated from another (social animal!) and they have the same life like a prisoner living in a isolation cell. I liked your stuff with the chickens, but this with the rabbits is bad. Please reconsider.

On Doug and Stacy Homey HOmesteaders use these sign boards to lay down to block weeds in pathways. Do you have a system of collection the rabbit pellets other than scooping or raking the floor ? Would running a long piece of variegated roofing the length of the cages to catch and direct sewage to a movable container / wagon or wheelbarrow work more efficiently ? Even if it didn't catch all, some would be better than having that much on the floor and w/o running water to clean and sanitize the floor it could quickly turn into a unhealthy environment.

Love your videos!! And to the idiots saying cages are abuse, you obviously have never owned more than a rabbit or two! I have 12 rabbits and although I'd love to give them a natural environment, the truth is, I cannot because rabbits do not know that they shouldnt dig out (and do natural bunny things!) so to protect their lives (from getting out and getting eaten...) we must keep them in cages! Or would you rather them on the ground where they will eat all the grass in their area and have poop/urine right where they sit? Wire cages.... are cleaner! No poop at their feet. I have rabbits for meat so keeping them in cages is essential to my family's well being. If you think this is abuse, look up large operation rabbitries! They are crammed in cages (instead of 1 rabbit per cage, try 10! Small farm rabbitries like these are helping lower the number of rabbits kept in large rabbitries (since those of us that are growing our own arent buying from those large companies) If everyone would take responsibilities of their own meat, large companies would be put out of business.

The cages are still pretty damn small and unnatural... No any activites to them (or are you just going to start decoration)? And isolated from one to another? I don't care if you don't consider them as a pet, or if most of production animals had it worse. I'm just saying this is not real life to them. At least provide some straw to have something to keep busy with and company of peers. Anyhow, your consideration of hygiene is a good thing.
