You may want to get some stove gloves. They are leather and have long cuffs so you can position wood in your stove better. I can't believe its stove time again already! Luckily our house is two stories and it draws just fine. Our stove returns the exhaust so we only have to clean the chimney every two years. I really like that stove!

I used an Isokaren flue which had minimum creosote built up and always ran a hot fire to insure that the exhaust gas is completely burnt. I had a collective with a boiler that absorbed the excess heat.

I use copper anti seize on my chimney joints and it helps a bit when disconnecting and connecting for maintenance.

Try a metal trivet that will get the pan up away from the actual Stove Top and run it a bit cooler. The taller the trivet cooler the pan. Old time wood stove, cast iron kitchens usually had several trivets. All cast iron no plastic no rubber no ceramic that was a reason they had them.

When I was in college 20 years ago. I got to interview a family they had never converted to electricity. They had a fear that electricity would make them lose their vision. Anyway the old lady told me who still used a wood stove. That she visited her sister's house one time. She had an electric stove. She said she had an awful time using it. She burned everything. I do remember the distinct smell of their house. It had that lovely hickory smell. They were wonderful fine people too. Although they were suspicious of me interviewing them for my research.

I suggest not using candles to start the fire and especially not drippings. The wax doesn’t burn, it’s the gas from the paraffin. Melted wax has the good part used up already. When using candles to start your fires, you will end up with a wax mess build up to clean. I have already regretted using candles for that purpose. It will ruin firebrick.

If you are going to pay between $2500-$4000 on a wood-fired cookstove, why get one with a glass top? You can't use a lot of cookware on a glass top stove. I have as a backup a modern glass top stove and hate it. The slightest boil over or splatter, and you will have a very difficult spot to remove, and then again you will still have a "shadow" left behind on the glass. A few years back I bought an antique Glenwood cook-stove in excellent shape for $500.00. Yes, it is very heavy and for added safety, I installed 4-6"x6" beams under the stove & floor in the basement. The stove easily came apart to make transportation very easier. I've decided to sell the electric stove and will be purchasing a gas stove instead. I have my Glenwood on a hearth sits half in the kitchen and half in the living room and it keeps my 950 sq ft house toasty in the fall and winter and I never have to use oil to heat the house. Even the older ones like mine are efficient and will keep burning all night long and will have hot coals in the morning to fire-up again. The beauty of cast iron is that it will retain heat for hours and there are no limitations on the type of cookware you can use on its surface. Best of luck with your new stove!

I read the manual and there is no restriction nor warning about using the propane burners while the firebox is alight. If that were true they wouldn't even be able to sell them in the US or Canada. Its perfectly safe to use both at the same time. Don't shortchange yourself.

We used the surface of the stove to cook on when it is warming the house. Using the propane at the same time would use more fuel than was necessary.

I visited friend when the main heat was out ruined main unit it came apart inside he had a propane stove in his kitchen & a big old wood burning unit it heated food & heated the kitchen and rest of the downstairs's ie he went nuts when the electric bill Why his wife and daughter cooked on propane & ran electric heaters upstairs thus he had a supper high bill for one month! I told him in 1988-89 one month in winter on full electric apartment the bill was 320 in one month! my ex wanted full electric stuff!

4:37 - You do not need to put such a stove on four (4) coasters. Two boards, and wood dowels to act as rollers that is all you need. To change direction, just move the boards as needed. Only takes two people. That is how the Egyptians moved stones to build the Pyramids. I have a 500 lbs wood stove and that is how my wife and I have moved it more than once. Also, if your tile was installed correctly, it will not crack when placing your stove. Cracking only means incorrectly installed tile.

Each stove is different. I have an osburn insert that requires the stove and flu be cleaned every 1 1/2 cords. I would imagine if the stove is running constant that it would need to be cleaned out that often.

New ladder! New ladder!! New Ladder!!! The ladder looks short and the connection for the back legs realy looks damaged. I have used a Little Giant ladder at home and work for years, they are heavy but one ladder will do alot of different things very safely. I do have several other ladders and use them. They have a new improved model. It has built in leg levelers. Much better than a little stack of things. But the tremendous improvement are the ladder stand offs that also can be used vertically at the top of the ladder. You no longer need to work your way arround the side of the ladder. You now step between two hand holds right on and off the roof. Safety improvement one hundred percent.

That scrap metal ladder is unsafe. It is also too short for that project. Recycle it and use the money towards a good double sided fiberglass ladder that is about 4 feet taller. They aren’t cheap, but cheaper than an emergency room visit. Or just build gated stairs that reach the roof if you feel maintenance will be required often enough. Teach that little girl safe habits while she’s young.

Throw that ladder away!!! not tall enough: weight of the ladder makes it stable /get xtention ladder for that job! ...luv fire starter ( i use chainsaw wood chips + melted wax) also/fat lighter-pine. 300lb 16 foot ladder -will be stable. a-frame ladder -climb on -off as it sits sideways -will get you killed -or major hurt eventually. PLEASE dont do that !

Does your house smell like a bonfire? What do you have against gas or electric stoves? Where are you chopping trees down to cook your food? This way of cooking seems irresponsible considering that through the evolution of time and seeing deforestation has occurred over the past 100 years. That’s why people invented gas and or electric appliances.

If it is operated properly, there should be little to no smell. About the same as a fireplace. Natural gas and electricity don’t just wander to the house, there is an environmental impact with that also. Depending on your environment, using materials available to you makes more sense. There are generally enough trees in some areas that are not worthy of being lumber but great for firewood. Storms and aging/sick trees work well for this including trees that fall naturally. Unfortunately not all wood is suitable for wood stoves or fireplaces . Some people or corporations are irresponsible with the worlds resources.
