Honest speaking, literally any laptop is fine. Just make sure it has 8gigs of ram and a SSD for its storage. Preferably go with a 13or 14inch laptop cuz they are lighter and smaller in size which will help a lot in your college life. And also welcome to VITC 🫂

Engineering? Way no. For engineering Windows is much better. There you've got SolidWorks, Autocad... and much of the AutoDesk software only works on Windows. And for rendering scenes with a lot of polygons and simulations the base M1 is bad choise for this type of work. Go for regular Windows laptop with 16gb ram minimum. 32gb is better. Any recent intel/amd 6+core CPU and dedicated gpu (for more detailed specs you need to provide more information what engineering are you going to do). And then you are free to install any linux/windows you want.

@@vasekhorcicka5007 actually for a computer science student, MacBooks are the best. One of the easiest ways to prove this point is, all the tech companies give MacBooks to their software engineers cuz of the stability which these macs provide! And that person had specifically mentioned web development, and these macs are more than capable to do those tasks! And there is A LOT more to a computer than it’s performance which windows buyers ignore! Things like build quality, display quality, trackpad, keyboard, battery life are core essential things which a user interacts and uses the most! And MacBooks excels in these departments by huge margins Performance is not everything. Try to change my mind, but M1 MacBook Air is the greatest and the most revolutionary laptop every produced for the consumers! These Apple silicons work on a whole different architecture called as the ARM, it’s completely different when compared to AMD and x86 based CPU’s! The performance gains and most importantly the power efficiency gains with Arm is straight up mind blowing and leaps and bounds beyond! For context, an 8gb of ram on these Apple silicons matches the performance of 16gb ram on windows counterparts And this is just the tip of the iceberg on how different Apple silicon is when compared to the competition!

​@@navygeeks Hi, but I was referring to engineering because he mentioned it. And for this subject that includes mechanical engineering, structure engineering, civil... and so on. Mac are not best, because lack of software. And when simulating often it's necessity to have 32GB ram or more. Because you have to store these millions of vectors and polygons etc somewhere. Yes for computer science why not. It's a good choice but not for engineering. Also I'm aware of M1 different architecture, and also I know that for many operations are much more efficient (performance/watt) because of different architecture and because they've got specialised HW parts that do the heavy lifting(accelerators). Like codecs for raw video format etc. And classic x86_64 does not have these HW accelerators because they are specialised in general purpose compute only. But ARM lacks support of advanced instructions sets like AVX512, which comes handy when dealing with extreme numbers for precision simulations and so on. I just want to say that both are very useful. It just depends on what type of work you are doing. Are you a professional photo/video editor? M1/M2... Macs are an excellent choice for you. Can the same work be done on any other laptop? Yes, probably even better but it will be a tower pc not a laptop. Because regular x86 lacs these HW accelerators and so, they will be much more inefficient in laptop. I myself study CS, but I prefer regular laptops for reliability and customization. I have dual boot Linux Fedora/Windows 11. I can swap my nvme ssd, I can swap my RAM, replace my battery and so on. this is something you cannot do on a mac. And the battery degrades and ssd to. It does not matter which manufacturer it is. Also I would like to mention that base model M1 is bad because when you do heavy multitasking, 8gb ram is just not enough. So the Mac will start heavily swapping into internal ssd. And this will kill the ssd very soon. And then you cannot replace it. Google it. I'm not making this up. Apple's modified ARM architecture is impressive and it's good that it exists. But just like always you do some trade offs.
