Installing Upgraded Air Springs in the C5 Allroad - Expedition Allroad

Nice work! but there are a couple of things to note for your viewers: 1. that lower shock bolt was originally installed correctly! By now you have probably seen that the excess bolt sticking out has contacted the lower control arm and carved a big hunk out of it. You should correct this - especially if you are going to offroad. It will do damage to the lower control arm. The correct procedure is to also drop the lower control arm (either one) to get the bolt in. Be sure to reset the curb position for the bushing. 2. the lube on the shock body did nothing at all - the sealing surface is down lower on the shock where the o-ring land is. That is where the lube needs to go. 3. Perhaps you did this off camera, but the upper mount o-ring sealing surface needs to be cleaned and checked for pitting. You can get leaks there if the aluminium sealing area is not perfect. 4. While you were in there it would have been a good idea to either replace the upper control arms, or at least replace the upper bushings. They wear out quickly on these cars. The bushings are cheap. 5. Take a good hard look at the oil pan! It is the first thing you are going to hit in any serious off road situation. I don't have a good solution here yet (I have 2 allroads - one for a daily driver and one for offroad! and yes - I am nuts) but some sort of skid plate would be nice. 6. If you plan to run bigger tires and have the suspension always at a higher level, you might want to consider re-setting the "curb position" of all the suspension bushings. They will live longer that way. You might also add a longer bump stop to the shock so the bigger tire can't bottom out. The rear air springs tend to last for 200K miles, but eventually they will leak too. The leak is often from the upper cap/o-ring. Just replacing the o-rings on the rear can extend their life for a long time as long as the bags don't leak like yours did. I have Arnott springs (front and rear) but frankly I think the factory springs are much more durable. My Gen-2 front springs only made it about 50K miles, where the factory lasted about 100K. I expected much better, but Arnott has a great warranty - I just used it! Have fun with your allroad - these are really great cars!

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a single person or read anywhere on forum that people think the factory air springs are better than arnott 😂 but I guess people have different experiences. This is my second Allroad, they aren’t “great cars” compared to other vehicles in any aspect, especially when they are owned by people who don’t take care of things or understand how to take care of a Volkswagen with way too much technology for its own good. The only good part about these cars is the 2.7T when you tune the crap out of them and replace the crappy turbos they come with. The car already has 29’s on it, and will never see rock crawling to put the oil pan in danger especially with a skid plate. Anyone that can’t judge the height and an obstacle and slams into it with their oil pan probably shouldn’t be off-road to begin with. That being said, the entire suspension was re-aligned and curb set, 402 mod will be the next thing if I really need more height as this is more of a camping rig and isn’t really a huge focus of where I want to waste my money.

Great video. But do u have a video for replacement of C5 Allroad REAR air suspension strut where the airbag is on the damper strut itself. ? 😊 or a video of how it look like when the airbag is pumped up on the rear strut ?

Oh yes I lubed the track before putting the new o-ring up top, plus a little lube on the ring as well!

@@luke9357 car was actually posted for sale by the new owner a few weeks ago, still on the air suspension with those bags and he hasn’t had any problems other than the actual compressor failing a few weeks ago (unrelated to the bag replacement )!

So far so good, no complaints on my end! I hose em off after every adventure off-road to keep debris off of the rubber, but no leaks, no weird noises, really solid

Lithium grease is petroleum based which is corrosive towards rubber

If you Google it, literally everything says white lithium grease is safe on rubber and helps keep it soft..
