Windows XP was always version 2002, in fact during development one of the names they gave XP was Windows 2002. It just happened to release to the public in 2001.

You cannot update from 2000 pro to XP Home. You can update from 98 or ME to Home. You could have updated 2000 to XP Pro.

You can upgrade to Windows XP Home from Windows 98 SE or Me. To upgrade to Windows XP Professional you need Windows 2000.
