There's later interviews with Jordan Kyrou that explain the situation more. Either way, the comment above about Berubes effectiveness to bring the locker room together, still is accurate. And you need a Core 4 that aren't all forwards. Build from the net out, with a good goalie, good d-man and two good forwards. The Pens had Fleury, Letang, Crosby and Malkin and built out from there. The Hawks didn't have a #1 goalie, but they had two top pairing d-men in Keith and Seabrook and Toews and Kane and built out from there.

That means sacrificing likely a lot of flair and goalscoring for backchecking and hustle in all three zones. That highlight reel goal that Marner scored in the playoffs from his knees will become a thing of the past and will be replaced by greasy goals and deflections during the playoffs. All of that was said above will only happen if everyone on the Leafs roster buys into what type of game Berube wants to play and that is the million dollar question if the players including the stars will buy in or ignore Chief’s message.

Absolutely loved what he had to say, to some it might 'seem' like a very little thing, but I think it's tremendous. We need a coach who's in the moment, reacting to situations exactly as they happen, being confident in his choices, and using all the information at his disposal to make the right decision for the team. make trade, anytime but during a trade-freeze period, signing a player ... if the player is a free agent/has no contract, anytime as well ... if they have a professional contract, need to wait until that contract ends

Player contracts run from 1st July to 30th June following year. If a player is under contract they can sign an extension to that contract only in the final year of the existing deal. If a players contract ends on 30th June without an extension in place they become either a Unrestricted Free Agent [UFA] and can sign with any team or any league they like. Alternatively they become a Restricted Free Agent [RFA] and the team retains their rights [provided they give a qualifying offer] - RFA status only applies to players under 27 or with less than 7 seasons played. Trades can happen at any time for either players under contract, player rights [So RFA's or Unsigned Drafted Prospects] or draft picks. If a team makes a trade after the trade deadline the players acquired are not eligible to play in the playoffs.

I think players like Marner & Nylander are in for a reboot on how to play hockey. Nylander's version of checking means using your stick at a 6ft distance & the hardest hit Marner had was the floor when he threw his gloves. Keefe is a good coach, but he was also trying to please too many people. Berube will hopefully toughen the team up to start finishing a check

Toronto can and should treat Marner like a rental. He is likely going to put the best effort (of the last few seasons anyway) into this opportunity to make a strong case for a strong upcoming contract. If he indeed is having a banner season and the Leafs are sellers at trade deadline they can get a good return OR they may be gunning for a cup run and it is worth retaining him and trying to re-sign or release next spring. Worst scenario is they eat some of his salary plus package a prospect and pick to another team to take him off their hands and receive mid round picks and over the hill plodding grinders who end up playing in another league.

So Marner can either waive his NMC so he can be moved and the team can get some cap space to add pieces they sorely need. Or he can choose not to waive it, and the front office can stick him in the press box, while still paying him, until he gives a list of teams he wants to go to. And that will do wonders for his value in free agency. Brian Burke threatened Tomas Kaberle with this same exact thing in 2011. And it worked out for Kaberle as he got traded to the Bruins and won a cup.
