He could still cook without making a bad trade. Unless you'd like to convince me that there's no team in the league that wouldn't have taken Walman without even needing to be coaxed with a second-round pick. Even if Y gets a great free agent signing, attaching a second-round pick to get rid of a very serviceable player on a decent contract didn't have to happen. There's only one thing that would make this make any sort of sense: if they make a trade and the "future considerations" include San Jose being a third team and retaining salary.

From a San Jose Sharks fan perspective, the Sharks wanted an offensive defensemen to replace Calen Addison, who didn't quite work out in his role from an individual perspective. Walman gives them that albeit with that low assist total. The Sharks are up-in-the-air on whether Shakir Mukhamadulin, the defensemen they acquired from New Jersey in the deal with Timo Meier, will actually make the roster on opening night. Mukhamadulin, 22, had a cup of coffee in January, and this deal hedges their bets a little. The Sharks defensive core is probably their weakest spot going into 2024-25 and as Steve said, this team has to spend money. Overall, I think this is a low risk, medium reward move by Mike Grier who has made a couple of them the last few days. The Sharks also recently acquired F Ty Dellandrea from Dallas (traded for a 4th) and F Egor Afanasyev from Nashville (traded for F Ozzy Wiesblatt) for basically nothing as well. In the summer, expect San Jose to keep going after wingers and defensemen. There's a lot of roster questions with this team going into next season, so expect more trades and more signings from this team. The Sharks don't even know if Logan Couture will ever be cleared to play again, which might mean $29.33m in cap space goes up to $37.34m. A lot of the roster spot favorites are unproven players, young players, and/or RFAs. The only guys with a spot secured next season are Celebrini, Eklund, Granlund, Zetterlund, Sturm, Ferraro, Walman, Vlasic (because of his NMC, if he didn't have it, he'd be an AHLer). Everything else is up in the air, and damn, it's exciting for me.

I don't understand why the Red Wings didn't just waive his contract to see if a team would take him on for nothing before they attached an asset to get rid of his contract. I feel like at the bare minimum that procedural aspect would not make the fan base hate the trade as much as they did.

Thanks for the video. As soon as i saw this trade i started thinking of the possibilities. This has to be Yzerman making space for an upcoming move. Jake Walman was a player that fans liked in Detroit. He seems like a good Locker Room guy and has a nice offensive side. Solid Defensemen who automatically is in San Jose's top 4. As far as how Wings fans feel about Yzerman; He is a beloved member of Detroit Sports Royalty and he would have to screw up royally for fans to turn on him. I think he's done a good job with the team, not perfect, but good. The team has seen steady improvement every year since he got here. The team could be better, but when you look at the mess that Holland left, Yzerman had to undue a lot of bad "GM-ing".

We know they have to sign both Seider and Raymond. They will most likely come in at a little above 8.5 x 8. If they also sign Gostisbehere to a 6 x 4 (which it sounds like is the asking price) they've spend 23 mil. I wonder if they looking very hard at Necas or Zegras and making room for. Also the red wings have atleast two nhl ready rookie defencemen in Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson, they have to make room for them.

@herlevh19
@herlevh19 3 ай бұрын
@@yzerab19Obviously it's just a guess but there are several things to consider. Firstly the market trends toward "brigde" deals. The example used is Lebron James. He can negotiate often and with the cap rising so will his asking price. That lead me to the second thing. The higher price is to lock them up for the maximum number of years. Long term (in most cases) benifit the teams, so the price is higher. Also you can't just get a McKinnon, McDavid or a Matthews. Otherwise every teams would pay that. McKinnons deal was also made a while back, if you need a reference look at newly signed deals. Look at Petterssons deal in Vancouver.

Shouldn’t be trading Walman when you have Holl, Chiarot, Petry, Maata taking up cap and roster spots. If you absolutely had to trade him, you shouldn’t have to PAY a second round pick to trade him away. He wasn’t given away for free, Wings gave up an asset to do it. Insane. Don’t really care if the Wings use that cap to do something big. Pay assets to get rid of the aforementioned D or Copp or other areas of the roster before Walman. Short of there being behind the scenes issues with Walman, I hate this trade even if something big is in the works.

The only consensus is that this is just a stepping stone to the actual move which has yet to happen at the time of this comment, but it hurts to see him go. I think he’ll buyout Holl if he can’t get someone to take his contract freeing up another couple of million and then he’ll try to bring back Kane and Ghost and sign another big forward or he goes after Saros and maybe re-signs one of those two. If he signs Saros then I could see him buying out Husso too.
@billjohansson88

Is not the most likely here. A Ville Husso buyout will span 2 years, has a cost of $3,166,667 and savings of ONLY $1,583,333. Not see that coming, too much work for so little. However, A Justin Holl buyout will span 4 years, has a cost of $4,533,333 and savings of $2,266,667. Holl is 32 years of age at the time of the buyout; therefore, the buyout ratio is 2/3. With $6,800,000 in salary remaining, the cost is $4,533,333, and the savings are $2,266,667.

Wille, I don't think he will be bought out at all.More off his last year will be more of a season where he can really prove that he is worth keeping or not (Cossa next year 25/26?). Holl is the one most of us think will be bought out, so no panic to do it "before" it's even possible to start such a deal before 7/1. Of the 22 teams that technically exist, none are interested in accepting his contract. So probably cheaper to buy him out over four years and admit that this was a mistake by S.Y.

@@crossface222 Interesting question. If Saros was the target as a third deal "from the beginning". In that case, it is most likely that Husso is involved in such a deal. That is, I don't think RW will keep Husso, but the question is where will Husso go, to Nashville? Saros is an A rank G (Husso not that much). Saros can play most games out of 82 as he has proven to do so before (Husso not so much). Saros would fit the RW timeline quite well as Saros is 29 this year. Cossa in 25/26 is given the best conditions to slot in the same way Saros did once upon a time. I'm not an expert on Nashville, I know they have Askarov and their other G is probably a UFA. The question is why Nashville would make such a 1vs1 deal. Probably something more needs to come with such a deal (Bergren, +?). I'm personally not against a Saro's deal here, the question is what such a deal really gone costs...

Using cap space you created from making a bad trade doesn’t mean you made that bad trade good now. It just means you made a bad trade to open space up. I just don’t understand not getting anything for Walman, let alone paying a second

As a red wings fan. Genuinely heartbroken. Fan favorite in detroit, responsible on both sides of the ice, and one of the best personalities in the entire league. This move is unjustifiable, even if yzerman brings in a big fish with that cap space, its a terrible move. Justin holl, olli maata, ben chairot all should have been moved WAYYYYY before jake walman did. Mind boggling.

5 full drafts with 3 players on the team? Yzerman has failed miserably in rounds 2-7. I could pick first rounders all day long. Yzerman has no clue what he’s doing.

Naaahh.. LISTEN, and listen good, Stevie-Y is a lot like John Kramer of the Saw movies.. always like 7 to 8 steps ahead of most people..😁 did you see Saw 10 yet??.. when that dumb fake blonde nurse thought she had John and Amanda.. I knew something was up just by how calm John was as he was getting into that blood boarding trap.. That's kind of how Stevie is and who he reminds me of.. it's like you think you got him but you really don't.. we think we have a grasp on him but none of us really don't.. and then he does something out of nowhere to surprise us all for the better.. Also the last player the Red Wings had to trade away and gave a draft pick to get rid of him was Vrana🤔.. Phoebe's a very calculated man and if he feels like he has to give a draft pick away there's a reason behind it all.. TRUST..

I think the Wing's fanbase is desperately waiting for Yzerman to ice a competitive playoff team, but even though he has a legendary status in Detroit, I think he's running out of time. This off-season may be Stevie's last chance to pull it off. He's had several years at this, with a so-so record, but it's time to produce.

@@kevinwasserburger3119 That's not what he said here. You are proof that eyewitnesses cannot be trusted, as you post at least 4/h after reading what he writes. He clearly states "fan base" what on paper are those who pay and watch the matches. There by including me as a fan. If there is no third part of these two deals then I am one of the fans who will send S.Y under the yellow bus for the Wallman deal.

Red Wings fan, love Yzerman as GM, but no matter what happens here, I cannot be convinced this was the right way to handle it. There is no reason I can think of to get rid of the second rounder. Walman is a top 4 defender on almost any team, with a wicked shot from the blue line and a great personality, who, up until he got hurt, played pretty well with Seider on a pairing that was in way over its head. We have 5 other defensemen that it is hard to argue could play on a second pairing anywhere other than San Jose, but not Walman.

Wings have improved year over year, for the 5 years he’s been GM. They had 17 wins when he arrived…and they had a playoff spot until 10 minutes before the end of this past season. He inherited a dumpster fire, and now they’re flirting with playoffs. He’s not getting fired.
