He's got the build to be mean. He's got enough mobility to be a bit of a menace. But he doesn't consistently show the mentality. It's like being mean is something he occasionally forces himself to do, but it is never his first instinct. He's a former 47 G scorer in the WHL. Some guys view being tough as a calling, some view it as something they need to do so that they can get in the lineup and try to move up to a more offensive role. I wonder if Kastelic is more of the latter than the former. He is a hard worker, so maybe with time he'll become all he could be. That might be more likely in the Bruins organization than elsewhere.

Fun Fact, that 25th overall pick use to be Boston's own pick! They traded it to Detroit for 6 weeks of Tyler Bertuzzi. The Wings, took that pick and used it to get Alex DeBrincat from Ottawa. So in a weird 3 team/2 year trade, Ottawa acquired Ullmark, Detroit acquired DeBrincat, and Boston gets Korpisalo. In the words of Steve Dangle Oof Marone!

The real question is where ullmark signs next year. If he walks (they probably couldn't sign the two goalies as they both deserve starting goalie salaries) then it makes sense and is a good trade for Boston. If ullmark stays it's a big win, if they trade him at deadline and recoup assets it's a small won and if he leaves after one season for nothing, Boston wins the trade

@ThePalisky they got probably the best return they could.. every GM in the league knew they couldn't afford to extend Ullmark and keep Swayman.. so the value was as high as it would ever be on an expiring contract.. comparing what Calgary got for their goalie, the Bruins made out well! The Sens get a big upgrade their weakest position and get rid of 75% of their worst contract by giving up a late first and a 4th line centre that they already have a replacement for in Chartier... really a win/win

Ottawa hands down won this trade and I am more than ok of having Ullmark not sign an extension right away. If he doesn't fit or doesn't want to stay, nothing is preventing the Senators from retaining and flipping him at the deadline for roughly of what they had to get to acquire him. We've also seen how Ullmark perform on a subpar team when he was with Buffalo. I don't think regression is in the cards unless the Senators over play him as he has never played more than 44 games in an NHL season. Great first trade (if you don't count Katchouk) for Staois. Hopefully more to come.

From an Ottawa fan's perspective, I think you're massively overvaluing the pieces that Boston got. Kastelic had very little value at all beyond winning faceoffs. He was asked to play tough, but didn't actually pull that off and was clearly falling out of favour with the coaching staff. He's essentially a throw-in that *maybe* sticks on Boston's fourth line. Korpisalo, on the other hand, was completely abysmal. He was, statistically, the worst goalie in the league last year. Ottawa was on the hook to pay him $4M for the next 4 years. It's impossible to overstate how huge it is to get out from that contract for Ottawa. I would have expected a first for someone to take that contract, let alone getting a Vezina winning goalie alongside it. Even retaining 25% you would think it would take a good amount. For Boston, maybe Korpisalo turns it around and becomes an ok backup, but it seems like a massive and unnecessary risk to take on this season's worst goalie for 4 more years at $3M. For Ottawa, this basically feels like we traded Kastelic for Ulmark, one for one, while dealing with an anchor contract at the same time. Even if Ulmark doesn't extend, I'm fully onboard with this move.

If you were to ask me a week ago what Ottawa would’ve had to give up to dump Korpisalo’s contract I woulda said a 1st + another pick/prospect at minimum. Probably would’ve had to take bad money back as well. They somehow got out of the contract while only adding in Kastelic (an ok 4C) and they managed to get the reigning Vezina winner in return?!? Even if Ullmark walks as a UFA this is still a big win from a Sens perspective. Goaltending was the biggest issue last year and Ullmark has been consistently good since his days in Buffalo. So you get him for 1year, and also dump your worst contract onto a divisional rival. Even if the Sens blow next year they can trade Ullmark at 50% before the deadline and probably recoup most of this value. Just a home run for Staois in his first big move I fully expect Korpisalo to bounce back in someway next year. Hard to be worse than arguably the worst goalie last year. Kastelic also seems like a prototypical Bruin as well. Big, physical, solid defensively, and will punch you in the mouth.

Let's not count chickens till puck drop.

@@Wexter0083 I already talked about Hasek in another comment. Craig Anderson is interesting. He was the most accomplished and long-serving goalie the Sens have ever had. He backstopped the team to an Eastern Conference Final and also played through incredibly difficult personal circumstances. I really like him too, and I think it's an interesting discussion. I think Ullmark's ceiling is higher. Anderson never won a Vezina nor ever really contended for one. His career GAA and save percentage is better than Anderson, though admittedly not by that much. The workload for both of them in their best years is fairly comparable. Anything can happen, but I don't think Ullmark is like the other goalies you mentioned. Matt Murray was a rookie when he won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh. He had never really been a true starting goalie even in that city. Joonas Korpisalo and even Cam Talbot never played at the level of Ullmark's best.

@@BloggerMusicMan small note Anderson was 4th in Vezina voting in 2010 and 2013. And in the top 10 for the Hart in 2010. He was an extremely accomplished goalie who happened to play in the same era as some all-time greats (which makes winning the Vezina hard when you're playing in the same era as Price, Rask, Rennie, Fleury and Lundquist). As for Ullmark we cannot deny he's in a different league compared to other goalies we've had. I just don't want to get excited to just be disappointed. I just don't want us calling him the next coming of Hasek before he even skates a game. Let's give Andy and Hasek this due as the best two goalies Ottawa has ever had and let Ullmark play without the baggage of having to be compared to either of them.

For that you get Ullmark, a guy who`s a season away from a venizan, and stellar 93.8 SV% with lower than 2gaa in almost 50 games. Honestly, Korpisalo had 0 value, it was rather a buyout with his numbers. The player is a depth player that`s worth close to nothing and their own 1st. Goalies are the most difficult positional players to predict. Very few have ever changed teams and remained the same level. Edmonton used to trade away goalies and they got better. It could go either way for sure.

Absolute home run for Ottawa. Korpisalo is average at best IF** he can come back from his horrific play. But as it stands, he is a massive negative asset and I would have asked a first just to get out of the contract (maybe a second with retention). So essentially you traded the cost to get out of the Korpi contract and Kastelic for (one year of) a recent Vezina winner. Home run. Yeah, Boston needed a tandem goalie, but why not a free agent or other trade target over one of the worst playing goalies in the NHL? For Boston, I would have reworked the trade to have the main return be Chychrun, or in this framework, wouldn’t have pulled the trigger without a sweetener (2nd rounder or additional prospect) due to the negative trade value of Korpisalo

If you are Boston, question is if you think your goaltending is still good enough to make the playoffs (which it clearly is).... and then, do you have a playoff caliber goalie to make a run (which they do). For Ottawa, i don't know. Do they have anyone coming up in the prospect pool that is close? Im assuming if they do they think that player is 1-2 years away from being a reliable backup, and then can take over as a starter in about 3-5? So you look to lock in Ullmark with an extension? I just don't follow Ottawa closely enough to understand how this firs into their plans beyond this upcoming season.

Ullmark's NMC was always going to tank the value from the Bruin's perspective. Eliminating half of the NHL as trade partners would more than halve his potential value (something something Pareto principle). Two roleplayers and a late 1st is honestly more than I expected the Bruins would get in return. I wouldn't be surprised to see an extension quickly too.

Bruins Fan. I was never under the impression the Bruins were going to make any waves in moving Ullmark. He’s a UFA end of the up coming season. Had he have say 2 years left on his contract they could’ve gotten more. I’m guessing. They got a few players back to fill spots. The got Ullmark money off the books. Gives them that much more freedom to land a Free Agent or 2. As well as resign whoever. Swaymen is the Goalie. As much as I like Ullmark. It’s just time to move forward from him.

The real question is where ullmark signs next year. If he walks (Boston probably couldn't sign the two goalies anyway as they both deserve starting goalie salaries) then it makes sense and is a good trade for Boston. If ullmark stays in Ottawa it's a big win for them, if they trade him at deadline and recoup assets it's a small win and if he leaves after one season for nothing, Boston wins the trade

Korpisalo was literally ranked dead last in gsax last year out of 96 goalies on evolving hockey. It was going to cost a first round pick to get out of his contract. Kastelic is big and mean but he is not good. This trade is still a win for Ottawa even if Ullmark leaves after a year.
