I grow up poor also and grow up with an alcoholic family. Thank God l can look back and it helped me with stronger understanding patience and caring. I had 4 sons and then divorced. I drank and couldn't cope with the next day. I went and got help and been sober 35 years and raised my granddaughter since birth. 19 now.

Thank you for your reaction - very touching! I was sober for the 20 years I was raising my sons - after they were grown and on their own - I started drinking -- alcohol is so socially acceptable though! Every commercial; every TV show; etc. Now I'm struggling - but I am finding God again, that's my only savior, I know! Peace, love and God Bless!

My father drank until he wanted to take my daughter for ice cream and I couldn’t let him because he might drink. He checked himself into rehab right after that conversation. He called me a few days later and I asked him why. He said he didn’t want to miss his grandchildren’s lives like he did ours. He remained sober for 38 yrs until he passed in 2020. He enjoyed the lives of his 23 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren and had relationships with all 9 of us kids.

For me it was enough to get a dog. I had a dog as a kid. It died when I was 12. In my teens I started to party hard and I drank more and more. I was in a violent street gang. Fights all the time with other gangs. I was often in jail. Life felt pointless. In my 30's I got one year in prison. I've never used narcotics so I was sober all the time spent in prison where narcotics are the only drug. When I got out I went right back to partying but I think my head had cleared a lot by being sober and I was thinking that it might have been the alcohol that had made my life so pointless. I got me a dog since I love dogs and that did it. I felt so much love for my dog that I would rather be with him than being drunk. And because of the dog I started to get out in nature, the wilderness, and that calmed me down too. I'm +50 now and life is ok. I don't bother anyone and no one bothers me. I missed out on having a family with kids but that's fine too. I think we need to find something good that is worth more than our addiction to be able to quit it. It feels good to be drunk but would I choose that when I know it means I won't be going to the forest and see my dog happy? For me that's a no. For me who doesn't have children my dogs are the most important thing in my life. More important than alcohol or being a tough guy. (I was addicted to fighting too).

Brother, Oliver says this was a song he'd written some time ago. He says he was at a point that tears overwhelmed him, and he fell to his knees asking for Almighty God's help. I'm sure the answer is, "He did!". If you've seen any of Oliver's live concerts here in America, he'll always read several verses from the Bible, before any music begins. And along with him, are his three dogs he loves so much. Just today, Oliver has agreed to sign on with an agency that will book live appearances all over this country, and also the world. It might be worthwhile for you to per view "The Joe Rogan Show", where Joe interviews Oliver at length, giving us a little more insight into the man, the lyricist, and the music of one humble servant, Oliver Anthony. THANK YOU!

I appreciate your reaction videos very much and I disapprove of disparaging comments or snap judgments that you receive. 🙏👍 One thing Mr. Anthony wants is for us to be kind to each other and have compassion. He says in an interview that he wants us to ask ourselves how we will carry on the messages from his songs in our own way in our own lives after his songs are history. I hope more commenters will be circumspect.

I have watched dozens of reactions to this song and you are the first to point out "IF I wake up tomorrow"! It's almost his hope that he doesn't. I'm pretty sure he recorded this when he was still drinking. Just based on his comments about when he quit and the date this video was posted. Great insight. New sub.

If he were to die, he would go to heaven. This world is suffering. God appears to be glorifying Himself through 'Oliver's' suffering, but that does not relieve him of the immediate pain. Remember, even Jesus prayed that His cup of suffering would pass, but ultimately that God's will would be done. Jesus did not enjoy life on earth. His suffering is recorded in intricate detail in the Psalms. Suffering is the lot of believers. It is the only thing we are promised in this world. The key is to have Hope for the next.

It's common in Anthony's culture to speak humbly and conditionally about the future too so it might go without saying to some analysts. "Now I lay me down to sleep..." and just sprinkling "Lord willin'" into daily language when talking about the future. I've even heard the occasional "if the Lord hasn't come back yet".

Super perspective Dr Nic. Personal journeys are full of nuances and a myriad of experiences. We all have ways to deal with it. Agree, some ways are more "socially acceptable". Others ways, are judged reckless and unconformist. I think what counts, is finding balance and clarity, in something outside of our troubled minds. Challenges that are creative, conscience building and altruistic. Never judge a book by its cover. Tolerance, understanding & reason.👍

All of the Anthony songs I've heard so far have nailed the frustration, anger, and shame everyday people have with life today. You know, some one of the many reasons to be angry ("cussin myself") with yourself is that both you and society expect you to be able to take all the blows the world deals, dust yourself off, and get by. No matter what it is, how big, how often, and how relentless. I'd say, nowadays, for most people, it's too big and too relentless. They're losing their grip. They react by their temperament, some drink and drugs, some to violence, some to nasty gossip and social attacks, some to mentally giving up and giving over their lives and decisions to a charismatic strong-man leader. It's all really quite a mess, getting messier. It's no surprise people feel overwhelmed. The surprise is the people that manage to get by.

I think the song is saying that consciously or subconsciously the damage one does to one’s self through drugs or alcohol is known to yourself yet the pain is so severe you keep doing it anyway. It’s the daily battle people have with addiction. He senses his problem and pleads to be sober and start living right but the outside conditions are not getting any better and the pain is still there…so it’s not happening tonight and he pours himself a drink. It’s authentic, it’s brilliant writing and it strikes a chord with so many dealing with the rat race we’re in right now.

I'm glad you noticed the "IF I wake up tomorrow" line. I think that's the most powerful line in the song. I see it differently than you did though. Not religious, but he knows he's slowly killing himself, but if it happens, it happens. Hes given up...he's not going to change (ain't gonna happen tonight)

I am 74 with 8 great grandchildren. I learned a very long time ago to not pre judge people. I want to talk with you, look in your eyes, see your smile way before I notice if you are any race, culture, religion. I grew up poor but got a huge work ethic from my parents. Been retired 18 years now and life is pretty darn good. Life has been very hard at times but I always thought that tomorrow will come and it will get better. Not a Polly Anna outlook but from the school of hard knocks.

If you watch some of the content out there, apparently he just recently hit the wall. Only a few months ago. He told God if you get me off of this stuff, I will focus on You. And a month later this firestorm has occurred. I think God is at work here, in a big way! It's no accident to me that his music is taking off now! He gave up drinking, returned to God, and his music hit us all in the chest!
