Opinels, damn near perfect knife in my opinion. Lightweight, sharp, durable, extremely durable lock, good ergonomics, one handed opening( if you get creative), and come in various sizes and colors, and best of all, cheap. I wish I found this knife before I blew $100+ on knives.

I have the #6 through #12 and I love them all. You are right the #12 is a beast, I use it mostly in the garden to harvest vegetables and to prune plants.cuts like a champ.

The first time I saw an Opinel I was a kid. My friend had the smallest one and it was the sharpest knife out of any of the knives that my friends carried. I've got some really nice knives in my collection but I use my #8 the most. Partly because I wouldn't be very upset if I broke it but more so, it gets the job done! And keep the experience ones in good shape!

I remember visiting 3 shops in Austria while I was touring with a band, and they all had Opinel's but they were all stamped Inox, too bad they didnt had any carbon ones. i love these knives, so simple and organic.

At first i was reluctant to buy an opinel, cause here in Spain we have a lot of good cutlery at very affordable prices. Finally i got a carbón #8 and i liked it very much, but soon it broke on my hands just whittling a piece of elm wood. Years later i found in an old hardware store a cabon #12 opinel, and gave it a 2nd opportunity cause the blade was fairly thick and i thought it won't break easy, it restored my faith in Opinels and love that sharp big blade. Since then i've bought 4 more carbón #12 to gift them to my sons and relatives... Is one of my most used blades at home and outdoors.

Got a No8 Carbon many years ago and didn't have great expectations. It impressed me so much I bought another (identical) as a backup, but have yet to use it because the original is still going strong. Now I've just ordered a No12 Slimline (only made in stainless, but it'll do) for fishing - can't wait!

I absolutely love my Opinel! I forced a patina on mine using mustard & got some really nice tiger stripes on it! You can get the carbon blades very, very sharp with little work. As you said, a must have in any collection!

I like how Opies are ground to have a really tiny secondary bevel. Make 'em slice good and makes 'em extra easy to re-sharpen, especially the Carbone ones! The Carbone ones are XC-90 which is pretty much identical to 1095 so it's pretty good. I imagine there are quite a few younger guys without any experience with straight low alloy carbon steel. So one of these would be a good introduction.

I've been buying them when I visit France for years. It's funny how that in the US most haven't heard of them but in France, every single convenience store you go in carries at least 4 sizes from 6 to 10. I love mine. I have both Carbone and Inox and have never had a problem with either. The carbone clearly takes and holds an edge better but the Inox is just as usable and quite good.

Own 2 of these purchased in the early70's I think...one has spent its life as a utility blade in my in house tool box and the other in the garage sticking in a block of cedar on my work bench..always handy...easy to sharpen...lots of patina..

Great review because it made me think! I have always preferred the stainless blades from Opinel, just because they always look "new." Your comments about "patina" got me to thinking... A nice collection of well patinad knives would also be a beauty to behold. Just don't know if I would ever use all 10 knives enough to achieve that. Maybe I should try!

I've owned a whole bunch of knives but Opinels were the ones that finally stuck. I've been carrying a no. 9 I bought used (because I prefer the ones that say Opinel France on the blade) and I've been carrying it for over two years now. It's aged so much it looks like it could be 100 years old. I can't recommend them enough.

Jaime Gonzalez they go #2 thru #12 skipping #11. #1 was for cleaning pipes and was discontinued long ago. The #11 was considered redundant as the #10 is quite large and the 12 is a beast. They also make a novelty #13 that is machete sized. The #8 is the most popular and comes in different handle colors and materials, though I prefer the #9 cause I have very large hands

Hey Jeff. So I literaetly just got an Opinel yesterday at REI and I know they are great knives but I think I got a crap one. There's some play in the blade and the locking mech. Is really stiff and it won't fully keep the blade from moving! Idk I wanted to go back and return it and get a carbon fiber rubberized one with a built I in whistle but idk. What r ur thoughts?
