@4:28 he added the dry beans without washing them... That's how I did it for four decades. And then I tried washing(rinsing) them in a clear glass bowl. Just run water on them and agitate, dump the dirty water and repeat until the water stops being dirty. And yeah, sometimes the water looks like you just washed your dog in it. I always wondered why sometimes my beans tasted "earthy". RINSE YOUR BEANS!!

Thank you for the base recipe! My version tonight had: 5 diced hot Italian sausage (from the freezer), 1 onion, several small sweet peppers, chopped fresh green beans (cause they were in the fridge), 2 gutted yellow squash (cause they were in the fridge), chicken broth (from the freezer), chopped garlic, red chili flakes, ground mustard, ground cumin and about 2 cups lentils from a bulk container I had on hand. I didn't stop and blend. I let it go through the whole cycle. It was so delicious!

I am nearly 81 years old, and I have never soaked my beans. Neither did my mother. It’s just never been necessary. I will be putting chunks of ham in my bean soup. That will add a lot of flavor. No course there will be onion and I do have garlic. I also use better than bullion as a base for all of my broth. That stuff is amazing. I like the idea of using my immersion blender to thicken the soup. Good idea.

works great. i love that it has stainless steal pot inside kzbin.infoUgkxG-7WiT7ocumjytOpHDFt632PL0pxXRAg and not the one with coating. we used to have a coated pot before, and the coating slowly peels, and i am sure went into the food that we cooked. Absolutely love stainless steel, and will not use a coated product again. This pot has many settings and many buttons, and i need to sit down with a manual to figure out which setting to use. I used the basic functions, and even though i am not technologically skilled, i turned it on and assembled it without any help.Very satisfied with this product overall.

This is a decent recipe & somewhat similar to mine, but i'm 57 yr., old irishman from rural Ky where soup beans are a staple meal here & i've been cooking since i was 9. I prefer the great northern beans or pintos, but no matter what, i soak them covered in water overnight. Instead of some of your ingredients, i use a smoked hamhock, Lawry's garlic salt( Lawry's brand only) , & bacon grease/ lard in place of butter/ olive oil. I also make a mix of seasoned turnip/ mustard greens for a side item & real yellow corn meal cornbread, spread on real butter not sweet or that jiffy junk, & a bunch of green onions ( also, i like a cold glass of buttermilk, but most non-country folks won't like that) . Biggest tip of all i learned many yrs. ago, if beans cause you stomach bloating/discomfort, flatuent problems, or problems in the bathroom the morning after, i'd do this anyway no matter what, for the amount of beans you made in the instapot, appx., 12-16 ounce bag, add 1 level tbls., of sugar in the pot at the start & will cause a chemical reaction with the beans, no sweet taste in the beans, but will rectify all the unpleasing issues i mentioned. God Bless you all.

Love Jeff and his IP recipes! Big fan! Helpful tip: When cooking dried beans - of any kind - in an IP . . . Always 'Prepare' dried beans for safely cooking in an IP! Consuming under-cooked dried beans cooked in an IP / slow cooker can be dangerous if beans are not prepared properly for this type of cooking. How to avoid toxic tragedy: Throughly, throughly rinse beans, then soak beans OVER NIGHT; next morning, drain and rinse, rinse, rinse soaked beans in clean, cold water (multiple times); next, in fresh water boil beans in a separate pot, on the stove top, for 10 minutes then drain before following any IP dried-bean recipes. Your prepared beans should now be safe for preparing any 'dried-bean' IP recipes for drama-free consumption. (Sorry, yes, extra steps - necessary.)

I grew up on eating Pinto beans as our soup beans. And was in my 40's before trying white beans ( Great Northern ) my ex-wife told me that she was going to make soup beans while I was at work. So when I got home and seen a pot of Great Northern beans in it I was confused and didn't know what to say. I did eat them but still prefer my Pintos because it reminds of going to my grandma's house and her having a pot on the stove for us with a big slice of cornbread. Those were some good memories

Bean soup in the Instant Pot is the best!! Very comfort food. Great video. Thyme and beans go great together. I often add a dried bay leaf when the beans are cooking. Thanks Jeffrey. Much needed now even though it has been a whole year since this aired. We are still in quarantine! Melaney from SoCal

I have to admit that I am such a perfectionist about cooking that I always have something to complain about when it comes to cooking vids. But I am stumped: I just can’t find a single thing wrong here.

I’ve been using Better Than Bullion for years. It’s an excellent product. Highly recommended. But, even if you’re not going to soak the beans, I’d recommend sorting them to remove the occasional pebble or chunks of soil and rinsing them.

I always wash and check my dry beans. I never soak them. Prefer stovetop pressure cookers because they permit instant cooling under water. You're recipes are great!

Here in the south, the white beans are really popular over rice. As well as red beans of course. We just season our beans with ham or other seasoning meat like smoked sausage. This way sounds like a really good way to get them to cream and be tender lots easier. Thanks for this.

Wow. So good. Please keep these type of easy, in your cupboard, recipes coming. This was amazing and I’m not a bean person. I am now. I added smoked paprika (had it in my cupboard).

This looks delicious but I’m a vegan so I didn’t sauté in butter and used vegetable broth nor did I put in the bacon and this came out as a delicious plant based version. Thanks for sharing!

Great recipe! I made this in my 8.5 quart ninja Foodi. At 30 mins the beans were not cooked. I experimented and found that one hour at pressure with six cups of liquid was perfect for me. Maybe I like mushy beans? Thanks for the recipe. Super easy to put together and very economical!

I just recently discovered your channel and love it. I am finally learning to use that instant I've been so intimidated by. One complaint, I'm trying to follow you very closely but I can't seem to get the snap right. I keep trying but end up having to cut up my veggies by hand 😎

New subscriber here! I posted on Facebook yesterday that I had made my first instant pot meal and several of my friends recommended that I check you out. I'm so glad I did because I've been wanting to make bean soup but I haven't found the right recipe. This one is it! I'll just add some ham instead of bacon and it will be pretty close to what I was raised on. Thank you!

I already made northern bean soup just the other day. Had some with homemade corn tortillas and some with cornbread. Get a pork loin on sale, chop into small chunks. Brown on saute mode for a few minutes before adding onions. Same with chicken. I always add other veggies, specifically peppers, so it's more complete. I chop peppers and onions and freeze some so I have them on hand for soup. I don't soak my beans overnight. I prefer to do a two-hour soak and rinse/inspect thoroughly. Otherwise, beans, even in instant Pot are too firm with some being crunchy. Also since I add meat, I cook for 1 hour. Meat falls apart easily. Soup thickens itself. Down to last bowl of bean soup, but still have lentils in the cupboard.
