Knew this game would be tougher than our first two because of UNI o-line and their smart veteran coach. They proved to be tough and had a really good game plan. I am happy with our first 3 drives, happy with our o-line play overall, happy with Dylan's movement in and out of the playbook, happy with the new plays we tried, happy with Haarbergs use, happy with the defenses bend don't break and only giving up 3 pts. Happy that Alvano hit his field goals and that our defense got a turnover and we did not really turn the ball over. What is concerning is the lack of offensive production in the second halves of games.
@obad9786Ай бұрын
UNI is a good football team. Holding UNI to 3 points is something the black shirts can be proud of. In the second half we played a lot of the back up players on offense.
@pauledwards5607Ай бұрын
We haven't lost the turnover battle once. We've scored on our first three drives in the last 3 games. Dylan is 74% in completions. We've been in control in every game so far. And yes, we've "played somebody". Anywhere near a finished product? Absolutely not, and were the things I woke up thinking about this morning. But lets remind ourselves of what's not happening...more turnovers than them; sloppy play; tons of stupid penalties at the worst possible times, no more shooting ourselves in the foot! And no one score losses!
@johnt.766Ай бұрын
They are making great progress, soon they will be playing a few teams that will require offensive production in all four quarters if they want to win. I hope they will be ready.
@andrewcramer9200Ай бұрын
We only scored 8 fewer points in the 2nd half than the 1st, and some of that is Rhule's philosophy. The UTEP game was all about playing nearly the entire roster. Colorado made some tweaks at halftime and when Nebraska counteradjusted, the refs anally raped them with horseshit penalties. Etc etc.
@alexanderthegreatandterrib4589Ай бұрын
@@obad9786 My concern is certainly not with the defense, though they did not tackle well against a big 10 type running team. My concern is that in the last 2 games in the second halves the starting offense has had 9 possesions that they scored 0 against Colorado and 6 against UNI. That is 6 pts in 2 games against inferirior competition in the 3rd and 4th quarters with the starting offense. That is a problem that needs to get fixed.

My goal was always 7+ wins given the schedule we have. The goal last year was a bowl game and we failed to achieve that even though it was well within reach. That doesn't mean that the goal this year is the same just because we failed in year 1 to reach that goal. 8+ wins would be ideal 7 would be semi disappointing but not end of the world. I loved it last night when the announcer just flat out said DR should be in the Hridmand conversation now… But the point is consistent with something I am observing… this team has not been challenged yet. They throw up enough points to theoretically win, then they coast milking the clock and trusting the defense to do its thing. Currently they are giving up about 6.6 points a game… odd are putting up 28 is going to win a few games. Ohhhh they say…. The BigTen is so much better.. this team looks to be better also. They look like a good mid to late 70’s version of NU. They may not have won every game, but Walking on the feild with Alabama everyone expected to win. That’s a feeling we haven’t had here in 22 years. We hoped to win, we hoped not to loose, we cringed at all the ways we found to lose. But we didn’t know we would win. Winning became an accident. I was screaming at solich the line wasn’t blocking effectively. They knew run blocking not pass blocking. This team knows both. Niles Paul ran down the field for 10 yards with a fumbled ball bouncing next to him down the field and never once thought to pick it up. We ARE a much better team than we have been in the 21st century. Let’s enjoy seeing how far we can go!

I think my sense of the offseason was the primary expectation from fans was to snap the bowl streak at 6-6. Then, as we got close to the start of the season, fans started thinking that even if Dylan plays like a teenager, he may have enough special moments to have a winning record at 7-5. After Colorado, I think a lot of people then jumped to think we could hit the over at 8-4. I think a lot of people are still weary from the last few years and are guarding themselves from the expectation of 8-4. We all HOPE for better than 8-4 but I do think most EXPECTATIONS I hear now are 8-4. That's a great place to set your floor after a lot of tough years. I personally would not shift my expectation to 9+ wins unless we went into Columbus 7-0

3 games 3 reaction videos recorded in your office rather than the bathroom. Thats an important stat. I was doing alot of hand wringing about the defense. The yards after contact was hard to watch as seemed UNI was the most physical team last night.
@rappmasterdugg6825Ай бұрын
This has been a great non-conference portion of the season. Yeah, we are 3-0, that's good. But I'm also excited that we've demonstrated that we can play the game smartly without a lot of turnovers or poorly-timed penalties, with very few injuries (I think we are actually net positive with three guys coming back from injury). We've managed to run our base offense and defense, showed what we wanted to put on film for future opponents but didn't have to show more than that, and the young guys have had a chance to get experience on the field. We are learning how to win and get into a strong enough position that we can spend time during the game working on areas of weakness.
@MichaelBethJonesАй бұрын
After getting the win, the most important statistic for me in a game like this is how many players get onto the field to get some playing time and experience. This week's third string player is next month's starter in the meat grinder that is the Big Ten.

And that, at this point, I will gladly take. Im doing my best not to pick and complain, just enjoy and see how far the D, Rhule, and Dylan can take us this year.
@traviszahl1081Ай бұрын
I think we could win every game. I also think we could lose 4 or 5. Just go 1-0 every week. Embrace the process and enjoy the ride! What is somewhat worrisome is that I don’t think we are capable of running the ball when the other team thinks we are going to run the ball. This may cause issues in closing out some closer games but having a QB that can make throws may make that a null point.
@gynandroidheadАй бұрын
Great job. We were a 30.5-point favorite!!! Nit-picking, the tackling for us was not up to par, and I am glad Coach Rhule called it out. I want to see us pop some 40+ yard FG's before I am reasonably confident with the kicking game. Other than that, I have absolutely nothing.
@obad9786Ай бұрын
The targeting penalty was created back when defensive players where laying out receivers and then dancing over them. That no longer happens anymore so maybe someday that rule will get reworked. The only thing about targeting I like is that using you head as the spear when you tackle could paralyze a player. See what you tackle.

Their quarterback was way better than expected...made a bunch of smart decisions. That fullback was tough to bring down. But only 3 points. I agree wholeheartedly with Jon's take on the refereeing. I don't know exactly what the answer is and I'm fine with protecting the players, but it seems like what's happeneing is the takeover of the game by refs to control the game for whatever reason...controlling the score for the gambling industry?...choosing the winner?....they just seem to be a bigger part of the game than the players. We talked about this after the Colorado postgame with Minnie, and in hindsight I felt that maybe all the targeting calls took off after Coach Rhule threw a fit about Barney getting smacked in the head at the sideline near the end of a run. The rules committee might have put the refs in a bad spot by making every tackle subjective. This has nothing to do with the holding calls and noncalls on every big play though. Seems we need some clarified blocking rules where holding is clearly defined, ...like no grabbing at all, not just while reaching. Maybe they could require all linemen except the center to wear mittens that keep them from being able to hold.

I hate it when people ask about Nebraska's "ceiling". Any team's ceiling is undefeated season - at least, until they lose. Realistically, I think 10-2 is very achievable. They're better than Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and UCLA and should be favored in all those games. They haven't got the horses to win at Ohio State and USC. Might they lose more than 2? Very possible. Might they win one or both of the games they should lose? Less likely, but possible. For the record, I give Nebraska a 50% chance of winning all the games they should win. I give them a 10% chance of winning at Ohio State and a 20% chance of winning at USC. If you're keeping score, that's a 1% chance of going undefeated from this point forward, with the strongest odds being 9 wins and three losses through the regular season.

Take the Colorado game for example..it literally seemed like a flag was being thrown on every single play in the 2nd half. In this UNI game they reviewed some plays and took forever doing it that wouldn't ever be reviewed in any other game. Why this always happens in our games idk...but it seems to be an outlier when I compare it to every other game I watch on Saturday..and its week in and week out.
