Instantly Fix GMC Terrain Engine Sputtering & Stalling

GMC Terrain is known for sputtering and stalling, this will fix it. To stop engine sputtering and stalling I changed my oil and added this no smoke oil additive to it. Heater doesn’t put load on engine unless you’re running defrost(it click the ac on). Probably a viscosity problem with the oil. I’m the winter it stays thicker. This stuff thickens the oil a bit.

I have tried asking around on forums to see if anyone could come up with answer why this works. So far either they have no idea why or think I am making it up. My thoughts, maybe the oil pump is slow at start, with thickener it allows pump to pump better? Trying to think what else a thicker oil could change to stop the stall.

I have the exact same year model car as you 2014 GMC Terrain SLT my problem is that the car is idling up and down a little rough and it does die it will not idle I put the recommended weight of oil in the car I put the right kind of oil in the car question is should I find some of that stuff that you got and try that I had a mechanic look at it and he could not figure it out

Today I did a oil change with mobile 1 and some lubegard biotech, started the Terrain and stalled each time, So I added about 5 ounces of Bardahl no smoke +, stopped stalling again. My Terrain has low miles, under 60k, still trying to figure out why this works. Before using the no smoke it stalled every single time I started it, even after long drives and running into store.

@@rotwiler7674 so here's my issue. It's exactly that, however my car only stalls once every 10 cranks maybe. It stalls early morning on the first start up, only once. Also stalls after a couple hours in the the hot sun, both scenarios the car will kick then sputter to a stall. It will only happen once I don't think I've had it happen twice in succession ever. The only code that pops up is a bad catalytic converter which I have changed but I still get the same code. I'm am very cautious about putting whatever's on the shelf in my car as it's a 167,000 vehicle

​@@brutalomen9594 have you cleaned your throttle body? Is easy job and takes only like 15 mins. How long since Vvt solenoids were replaced and spark plugs? I did the vvt solenoids, plugs and cleaned throttle body, was less a than 45 minute job and very easy. I would add a gm oem venting oil cap if you, is $12 online and can save your rear main seal from blowing out if pressure goes high. Also I add lubegard biotech, around 8 Oz with every oil change to add moly to protect timing chain etc. Biotech is one of the additives that actually do good.

2012 2.4l equinox owner here. Experiencing similar symptoms and surging at idle. CEL reads mis fires, oil sensor, rich conditions and the live diagnostic for short term was -24 indicating the computer is pulling fuel and running it lean. Thought the injectors were a culprit. I knew these have lspi issues. Low speed pre ignition due to ring gaps being non sufficient. I'll try this and hope to god it works. I'm almost ready to pay a northerner to take it for a spin and I'll report it stolen lol

That's a viscosity additive like stp. The 2.4 is notorious for timing chains breaking and having garbage piston rings. It's all luck whether your gonna have one. My mother has a 2012 Malibu withe the same 2.4 and is still going with 250000+ miles and no issues. My girlfriend has a 2010 Malibu with 180000 on it and never a issue. I bought a 2014 terrain with 104000 on it for my mother and we change the complete top half of the motor from it having the timing chain go. And after putting 3200 miles on it it started chugging and missing at a stop so started chasing all sorts of symptoms everyone else was having similar to find out that the rings are a failure and using about a quart of oil every 1500 miles. Mechanic buddy of mine that helps me work on everything bought one within a year of this one and says daughter has to add 2 quarts between oil changes. Says most of them break the timing chains around 80 to 100000 miles and chew through oil after 100000. If yours doesn't feel very lucky.

Could be the timing chain slapping around. If you take the top cover off the engine you can inspect.

I took it to a mechanic shop and they told me to call my part on the top and 100 and I need to look at the converter which I have I want to purchase a month and change my field system and my other like they came on with my stability track and also my Change the charging system so I know I have some of the trash in the battery so I went and got a new battery so I’m gonna put it back on there and see if that part is fixed. I was told I just needed a new car smell like I’m leaking gas but if I fix my fuel system the gas smell will leave and found that my car I think the Catholic converter would be fixed so needing some help here I want to get my car back or running so I can go to work.

My issue is a little different. 2014 Terrian is ok when short driving. After extended driving, sitting at a light or backing into a parking spot the vehicle sputters badly. It does not die out. I can replicate issue over and over. If i turn ECO mode off, it stops the sputtering and shaking. Turn it back on and the issue is back at idle speeds. Again this is only after at least a 30 minute drive.

Try changing the sensors right on top the motor to far left by cylinder 1 coil. Cant think of what there called. Sputtered and stalled in mine changed those and fixed. $100 bucks. 50 bucks a sensor!

@@derbycityracing2997 id be more than willing to bet that is exactly the issue. Before you replace them....change your oil...if you have dirty oil and you replace them, you will get the same thing. If you search for How To Clean VVT Solenoids...and you want to try...you can almost always just clean them and they will work. Save yourself some money...i would make sure to change your oil at 3000 miles...it will pay off...keeping clean oil is the key to that engines life.

Stalled one final time at a red light so towed it to dealership and it was timing chain. It jumped and damaged my engine. Mine is a 2014 terrain denali and 3 months after I bought it i was putting a brand new engine in it!! Now 6 months post new engine I'm getting rough idle, high rpms, vibration, and sputter all on start up. I hate this car!!! It has made me a car hypochondriac

Vvt solenoid, super easy to replace, remove bolt, undo the electrical clip, remove solenoid, some can be tight, but will come out. Put new one in. Was really easy. Could test also by buying generic ones, got mine to test that on Amazon for under $22 for 2.

I have the same problem with my GMC Terrain. The vehicle had 134,000 when it started stalling now has 137,000 miles. The vehicle was burning oil since I purchased it with 47,000 miles. At approximately 60,000 miles I started to use 10W-40 oil and it stopped burning oil. This is a strange situation that the ECU should pick up in the misfire data. There is no random multiple cylinder misfire or any single cylinder misfire data stored in the ECU. I was also considering excessive carbon buildup on the intake valves could be the cause. I will definitely try to add some of the additive you suggested and post an update. Thank you sir.

Update on the stalling at idle. I removed and cleaned the fuel injectors and that did not remedy the problem. In October of 2020 I had a CEL which was a faulty b1s1 pre catalytic converter o2 sensor heater circuit malfunction. I replaced the sensor and the vehicle performed great until the end of January 2021. It started the stalling at idle problem. I saw an article on the net that said pay attention to the live stream data on the scan tool and notice the performance of the sensor. The article also said that the easiest way to see if it is the aftermarket sensor is to unplug the sensor and drive the vehicle and verify the vehicle will not stall anymore. I have driven the vehicle and it is no longer stalling. I will be replacing the sensor with the factory sensor soon. I will give an update on the final result of replacing the aftermarket sensor with the factory sensor.

My mechanic has changed 3 censors so far due to a p0010 code with the check engine light - any updates or suggestions on what else to change/fix ? @@Sarahlala93 There are several situations that can cause a stall at idle. A vacuum leak, worn or carbon fouled spark plugs, VVTI solenoids worn timing chain. The first thing I would do is check the throttle body. A dirty throttle body can cause a stall at idle. Make sure that your throttle body is clean. I always use a scanner to clear Check engine light codes and I would also remove the battery ground and let the vehicle sit without power for 15 minutes. The pre catalytic converter O2 sensor may not be responding quick enough to correct air fuel mixture at idle at start up. A factory A/C Delco O2 sensor is imperative to ensure proper fuel mixture at idle. Hope this information helps.

i have a 2014 2.4 Terrain, replaced with new oem parts trying to stop the initial engine stall, these parts: Throttle body, maf, new air filter, gas cap, added a pressure release gm oil cap, both vvt solenoids, o2 sensors, ran tons of fuel cleaner, new spark plugs. Changed some, but still random stall, the terrain has 60k miles. So trying this no smoke this week, running out of options, was thinking about replacing the high-pressure fuel pump. The terrain has no blow by, pvc lines always clean.

You may also need to get the EGR valve cleaned. My Dad did this himself, he said it was difficult but our 2013 Terrain has worked perfectly for 2 years since he cleaned that EGR valve out. My 2012 GMC Terrain 2.4 idles quietly and very smooth with no issues. It's when I shift into reverse and drive the Terrain vibrates ugly. It's embarrassing. I live in South Texas so it's mostly hot or warm year round. I've changed the transmission oil, air filter, spark plugs, VVT solenoids, synthetic oil with Marvel Mystery oil added every oil change, and oil catch can. What else can I do? I'm running out of options here.

Try the bardahl no smoke, mine would start fine, then 20 seconds later I would see the rpms jump around and it would stall, usually I would be backing up. But stalled even just at idle in park. Bardahl is like $7. Could be your vvt solenoids also, I bought some cheap($20 for 2) generic ones to test install to see if it still stalled, was same, so I put the oem ones back in. Changing out the vvt solenoids is really easy, maybe 15 minute job, also the spark plugs are a 15 minute job. Even at 50k miles the spark plugs made a good power difference, felt like different vehicle.

2012 Terrain with almost 140K miles. It always rumbles at a stop but will calm down a lot if I shift into neutral. Rumbles a lot in the low end of 3rd and 4th especially going up hills before it downshifts. I bet those VVT cam seals are shot and spewing oil. I will try this soon and give an update on the outcome.

Update: So I went with STP Oil Treatment instead of the product in the video. It's also quite thick and you simply dump the whole bottle in with 4-5 quarts of oil. Seems to have smoothed out some of the rumbling and it pulls smoother uphill now. It's supposed to have a chemical that makes a protective barrier wherever there is friction. We'll see how it does long term and hopefully it doesn't gunk things up.

I added the no smoke to my 14 Terrain 2.4 and zero stalls since, has been almost a year. I tried $100s in. Parts and this does work! Before adding stalled about 20 seconds after every start up or when in reverse. Feels like it has more power now too.
