I read that John Glen asked this lady to "check the figures" because he didn't trust the computers. Computers are just machines. What Glen was certainly implying is that he didn't trust the PROGRAMMERS. Did anyone ever check to see if it was a programming error or a mathematics error? (I was a college co-op programmer for a PhD mathematician. Either/both can make mistakes. FYI: back in Glen's day, we didn't have the Software Quality Assurance testing we have now. I was that, too.)
@tyler_bt3326Ай бұрын
Just look at the absolute shitshow that was the Therac-25 and you’ll understand why Glenn trusted Katherine’s maths more than a computer. Computer science was still in infancy. Code isn’t infallible, and as you rightly said the code is only as reliable as the people writing it

@lawrencequave7361Күн бұрын
When I was working on my computer science degree in 1974, I co-oped as a Fortran programmer for the Missile and Gun Systems Branch of the US AIR FORCE ARMAMENT TEST LABRATORY at Eglin AFB, FL. In our office, we had about a dozen 'egg heads' who had PhDs in everything. They would write equations on the board 'a mile long' just like in the movie Hidden Figures. They were MATHEMETICIANS and PHYSICISTS, but--with digital computers just then (more or less) coming onto the scene--they weren't particularly competent in computer programming. At that time, the salaries for the 'egg heads' was maybe 20K to 30K a year. The starting salary for a programmer (when I would get my degree) would be about 12K per year. Do you think any employer was going to have 'egg heads' take time out to learn computer programming? HECK NO! They were going to hire programmers like me. Did I comprehend all those equations full of Greek squiggles? Nope. I didn't have to. My job was to transform those math equations into computer code, which I was excellent at. That way the 'egg heads' could keep coming up with more equations. My point: at THAT TIME you needed BOTH 'egg heads' AND programmers. Over time, computers came to be used for more than solving math equations for accounting or rocket science. They came to be used as the 'smarts' in all the millions of different devices we have today. At that point, the most valuable gadget designer was someone who had a degree in electrical engineering AND a degree (or at least a minor) in computer programming. A math-programming degree was very valuable, too. Over time, the writing of a widget specification fell to the people who wanted the widget, the thought being, "You know what you want your widget to do do. Write it down and we'll BOTH build and program it for you." That required people who could program AND 'think out of the box' and build stuff. Someone who could ONLY program was now useless. Programmers who were very smart and could invent things that never existed before were now in HIGH DEMAND. Industry changed the names of those people from 'programmer' to 'systems analyst' and their salaries SKYROCKETED! And that was ME in 1976. I was now on the 'computer science' roller coaster and it was going up very fast. No systems analyst had to worry about a job. Bad employer, horrible boss, uninteresting job, etc. QUIT! You could often have a new job inside of two weeks. By the way: All this took place several years BEFORE Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Microsoft, Apple (and many others) put PCs in everyone's homes. (Millennials, Gen-X, and Gen-Z: You can't just go to the fair and throw darts to try to win the giant stuffed animal. You've gotta find the highest, most dangerous roller coaster, be daring, and get on it. The cost of the ticket might be high, but the payoff will be worth it. Sorry, but it WON'T be easy.)

The other guy is a constant reminder of what we have to deal with. They are always intimidated by our brilliance, innovative skills and creativity. That mixed with hatred for women and black is a dangerous cocktail. When he could not get his way he demanded that she put his name on her work so he could take credit for it. This still happens today. Which is why I support the work from home culture when possible. “Darker ink is a good idea” I wonder if he meant actual ink or was implying a darker person… or if it means something else in the movie, which I haven’t seen. Either way, the implication here is a nice touch of acceptance in a time where it wasn’t commonplace.

Fear of color has kept our country from more greatness than we’ll ever know. How many inventions could’ve led to soo much more,- had we treated the original inventors well 😢 Fear from color has been the start and will be the downfall of this country. Smh movies like this are not sought out even, and are being banned from classrooms. My daughter goes to a private school and she was the only one who had seen it before it was played and it’s not just about color. It’s about how we relied on our minds first. She did better than the computer. She was the original computer.

When a subordinate says "I just don't think it's a good idea," without specifics, they need some personal one-on-one time with the boss, preferably standing on the carpet in front of the boss's desk while the boss explains the facts of life.

As an engineer, I would advise every engineering manager on up to watch this move. I have seen to many "old" attitudes politely surface. The intervention engineering is going to need in the future is not going to come from "old" attitudes or mindset, it will be the blending of ideas and those ideas will come from all levels of the social dynamics. Truly inspired engineers create because that's who they're destined to be.

It’s amazing to me how normal it seemed to disrespect people of color like that’s the natural order of society. Crazy! I was the youngest ever and first Black General Foreman, a middle level mgmt position at the Westinghouse Defense Center’s Command and Control Division. I was 27 years old. My peers were twice my age, and some didn’t speak to me for 3 years! From 1988-1991, I took off 3 weekends.

The Boss appreciated her he just had a bunch of competing priorities, when you're in a space race with another superpower security is actually important. Ironically it's those competing priorities which make him take the actions he does in the movie, he needs the fewest possible road blocks to the overall goal.

Costner being the white knight...
@GreenEyedRogue2 ай бұрын
No. First of all Costner's character is a fictional composite, but that's not really the point. As a government agency dedicated to accomplishing something that was incredibly difficult NASA attracted thinkers and innovators. People committed to doing something that had never been done before. It was the perfect place to challenge old prejudices. The arc of history bends at key inflection points. Change doesn't just happen. Some person must challenge the status quo. This is an important component of this movie. NASA leaders in the 1960's were willing to prioritize talent over protocol and we're all better off for it. The only negative thing about this story is it took so long to tell.
