In this video Grizzly Jim talks about a fantastic analogy about never doubting yourself when it comes to archery... and the importance of having confidence in your shot.

Great tip, probably the most important and yet most basic one that is available. I find my shots go better when I don't overthink them. Keep up the good work.

Hello Jim! Iam from São Paulo, Brazil and I really like your channel and all your work here, teaching us nice stuff and really great advises about instinctive archery. I practice instinctive archery in my backyard but I also practice olimpic archery in a good archery club here, and I'd like to share your videos with them, because they would be very useful to help the other athletes to understand some tecniques, like the confidence you told us about in this video. But, unfortunately, just a small part of then speaks english fluent (we have almost 50 athletes under 17 yo) and I'd like to insert subtitles in portuguese in your videos, but you would have to activate this option, so the community can help you to insert subtitles in your videos in different languages, it would help deaf people to understand too. I'll understand if you say that is not possible =) Nice job and keep bring us clear and nice tips, informations ans reviews =D

That's why I train both separated. Sometimes I geht the nearest target (so I never miss) and concentrate fully on the technical aspects, how to draw, how to release,... and hit the target very occasionally. And sometimes I train just the aiming, (ok, with a constant draw length, but not the best technic). And then there also is the shooting without overthinking of the draw technic nor overthinking of the aiming, fully instinctively just with the trust in myself "yes, you will hit", and I hit

This chapter was a great one, I would say in archery history. Merlin Archery and Jim was better than either alone. Still, memory lane is a great place to visit, but not to live.

Great advice Jim. I'm so sorry I keep asking you questions and hope I'm not being a bother but I noticed when you draw your bow you point/raise your bow a bit and then lower it at full draw. I've noticed I do the same thing but other archers have informed that that can be a safety issue if I were to accidentally release early or slip. For me, raising my bow like this engages my back muscles and gives me that feedback without focusing on it. Just curious what you think. Thanks for your time, man (or should I say bear?).

I personally don't think it's a safety issue unless you have no skill whatsoever in doing what you intend. However, i would say to you that it may be a bit of a wasted motion and unnecessarily slows you down (I'm thinking particularly on game here). If it works for you, stick with it. I used to do the same thing and began to pull the bow on the way up and strive to be at full draw when I was on target. As this developed, I became much quicker on target and my accuracy improved tremendously. I attribute it to there being less opportunity for interruption to my "already limited attention span" but I'm not sure why it works better for me, it just does.

I just finally got over my target panic and can now get to full draw, but to do that I have to focus on my back, because I release when it is engaged. Do anybody know how long it will take before my body has taken that in, so I don't have to focus on my back anymore but rather just focus on the target?

Don't you know that your focus should be entirely upon seeing the arrow go into the mark? Target panic is only a symptom of inadequate preparation. Don't let housekeeping and mechanics steal your focus away from the real object of the exercise. Use practice to subjugate all this other crap to sensible preparation and learn to have faith in your subconscious. Do you think about how to eat, how to walk, how to breath, how to make love while you're doing it? Grow up. Learn to relax and learn to shoot more naturally. Learn to silence the monkey on your back. Don't waste time on stuff that makes it worse. The arrow doesn't care, but it will always go where you send it. No exceptions. Everything is your responsibility. Meditate upon this while you shoot, at least for a while.
