Well done. My wife and I are new to traditional archery and are learning intuitively. A much better term than instinctive. No one ever taught me how to throw a baseball or shoot a basketball or kick a soccer ball, but I learned to make each of them go where I wanted them too. So we are working on forms that are comfortable for us, and putting the time in practicing. I do agree that consistency of form is critical. Thanks for your insight.

You are so correct, the smaller the spot the better, you can purchase from your local gun store a package (110 pieces) of stick on Florescent Red target spots they are 1"-3" diameter and at twenty yards I can easily see the 1" spot, but will usually use the 2" as I am 74 years and still trying. Always enjoy your great information.

Excellent points, I was thinking about what you said about aiming small. I remember Byron Ferguson's words that the center of every target is the same size, that if one masters this it wouldn't matter what size target one shoots at.

Hi Tony THANK YOU great question! In short no... Having a shelf cut in to the riser so close to my hand helps with shooting instinctively, but you have to make sure that you are using feathers and not plastic vanes, as the plastic could throw your shot off a little. Im guessing your takedown bow has a little arrow rest that compresses when the arrow passes through enabling you to shoot vanes if you wanted. you can still shoot instinctively that way. Thank you for getting in touch Shoot Straight!

Hi Jim Been doing this for a while - picked up this tip from GreyArcher. My Son in Law and have had great success (after much practice) doing the very same. To all you out there I recommend you try it. The learning curve is not linear, It will dip and hollow especially as you change distances and elevations. Up and down elevations are the worst to come to terms with. What I will say is that over time it works and if you are a regular 3D shooter you can improve your score on some of the plain flat trajectory targets almost immediately - thats just after a few hours practice. My advise don't give up or lose faith - it all come in time.

Using a playing card, or half of a playing card is a good cheap target to shoot at. Here is a book that everyone shooting traditional archery needs to have, and read. Its by Byron Ferguson called, "Become The Arrow". In this he explains all of these same points about aiming small. Like on a deer, don't just look at the kill zone on the deer. Find a hair out of place, or a dark spot on the fur in that kill zone, and shoot for that tiny spot. Jim here gives good info. Listen to him.

1,000 shots to get a good group consistently? More like 10,000... but that's part of the fun. Always room for improvement.

What is the controversy? It is just like a child learning to throw a ball. It is learned "instinctively". All the calculations are wired into your nervous system as kinesthetic memory. You don't need sights or gaps, you just practice and over time you are able to throw a ball and hit the catcher's mitt. Same thing with a bow, or a basketball, or a javelin, or a rock. Late comment but this video just came across my feed.

Hi, I really like your videos and I was hoping to pose an Archery question to you. I have never tried Archery before and have just bought my first bow (S1 Takedown Recurve bow) and I noticed that your bow doesn't have a arrow shelf (where mine does) and you shoot from the Riser instead. My question would be, does using a shelf hinder your ability to shoot instinctively and do the vanes or fletching hit the shelf there in throwing the shot off?

In my last comment on one of your videos I said "too much talk". I meant no offense but I was expecting more practice. Perhaps if you spread your theories at the same time you shoot the video could be more interesting. I also considered the name of your profile: Archery Adventures. I wish succes for you!

I use Coke and Pepsi cans and I can hit them from 30 yards with all my Bose Lee's Mongolian horse bows and other recurve bows from all over the world and practice makes you a better Archer the more you practice the better you get over an extent of time. It isn't something that happens in one day.

You learn instinctive shooting through repetitions. It's not an innate skill we are born with, which would then be truly instinctive. Intuitive is the correct word, after many repetitions. 'Instinctive' archery/shooting is a misnomer. Archery is a learned behavior. Archery would have to be an innate behavior, from birth, like breathing, migration, hibernation, fight or flight, etc, to be called instinctive. Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity are learned, not innate, behaviors. Archery is a learned skill gained through repetitions. No one is born with the ability to pick up a bow for the first time and automatically start hitting a consistent bullseye. That would be instinctive archery. For anyone getting offended, look up the word 'instinctive', and you will see it does not apply to archery because it's a learned skill and not something we are born to know and do. No sport is instinctive. We learn the skill sets, and some of us become better than others as a result.

Regardless of what you call it essentially it comes down to gap shooting. Because, after hundreds of arrows literally or more at a given distance you subconsciously automatically induce the gap at whatever distance you're shooting. Not criticizing it. It's a lot more than just focusing at some point and you're going to hit it, much more.
