Hey brother Jeff. Just want to tell you what an awesomely informative channel you have. I'm 66 years young and have been shooting trad bows since I was 9 years old. It took me until I was almost 30 to start unraveling the secrets of tuning the bow with the arrows to achieve perfect arrow flight with them. I stumbled around in the dark mostly thinking some bows shot for me but others just didn't. You put the pieces of the puzzle together better than anyone else I've ever watched. Wish I'd have known back then what I know now. I got rid of a lot of perfectly good bows that I didn't know enough to make them shoot well for me. You ought to have a billion subscribers. Thank you because now all my bows shoot incredibly well by me using the things you teach. Now I'm going to master this heavy FOC thing so I can die in peace and go to heaven whenever the Master calls me home...

Very helpful, but I would like to share another observation. I recently went from a past center cut recurve to a longbow and fought this same issue. I finally got the right arrows, but found that I had to pay special attention to keep my bow arm from over extending. I think that one MUST bend the bow arm slightly to gain alignment on a longbow. Once I corrected this, I had no more right grouping arrows (I am left handed), thanks for an excellent presentation.

Awesome job of explaining it all. it makes it easier for people to wrap their heads around it when it is both explained plainly and shown. when a person finally gets his equipt matched correctly it becomes easier to shoot better with proper practice. when everything is "tuned" correctly, you get better performance out it all which translates to the arrow's performance being best when hitting the quarry. more likely to have a pass tru and deeper penetration. keep it up Brother!

What I prefer now is to simply let an additional inch stick out front and shoot 200 gn total tip and insert with the same GT 500 trad. Surprised you did not mention this. Arrow length. Bow poundage and your draw length would be good information to know.

Exactly what I was thinking as well. I wouldn't hesitate to load up the front to tune arrows for my 55# longbow, but I don't think I'd want to load the front up too much for my 40# longbow arrows. For the 40# bow, I'd much rather go to a less stiff shaft like a 600 spine instead of weighing up a 500 spine.

Good points. I almost felt bad shooting my longbow even some recurve around 50lb that require a 250 up front tip for my 400 spine fmj 30” long as if it’s an indicator of their subpar performance compared to my ilf bow (even though visually hardly so). I guess it’s actually pretty common to be shooting 500s on a wooden bow. To remedy this I was planning to get longer 400s to also shrink the gap some. In fact I haven’t been able to get a good sight picture with my ‘straight shooting’ bows because I’m looking at a 36” gap at 25 which forces me to reference back and forth on an animal target.
@brovold72 Жыл бұрын
Holy cow. I shoot a take-down recurve left-handed and guess what? I group slightly to the right. My carbon arrows might be too rigid even with weighted inserts, but I think this at least puts me on the right track. I was seriously wondering if I was fully left-eyed etc.

Jeff can’t believe I found your channel today. Found you by looking up some info on the Hoyt Satori Takedown bows (ordered one up extremely excited coming in this weekend!) Anywho I’ve been trying to group really well with my current recurve bow (Bear Super Grizzly 50# at 28” but I’m drawing 27”) shooting 400 Traditional GT’s with 150grain field tips at 15 yards. I’m more convinced due to being a new archer that its more user error than the bow and arrows. But I do notice on some good days I’ll get a good few shots in the target of my box and other times they’re sporadic or grouping to the high left. Not sure if i should be adjusting the weight of field tips. Got any suggestions? Thanks for the videos man. I’ve been more inspired to shoot instinctively and still learning more about it.

Yep and you can go 600's with standard inserts and 100 to 125. If that don't give you enough cant the bow a bit more. So then your deflection goes left on a 45 and cuts your left by half and causes your impact to increase by 5 to 10 yards velocity dependant of course.

Raise your brace height up enough and it will pull the first set of arrows to center without going up in point weight.

No disrespect to either of you and I’m not saying either of you are wrong in all other cases. But for me, I went up from 225 to 325 on total point weight with absolutely zero change in left/ right impact. I went a half inch both directions with brace height with zero change in left/ right impact. My bare shafts shoot dead nuts straight and group with my fletched shafts. The issue, in my case, is coming from something else. I have went over all aspects of my form and release and feel like I’m way too consistent with my groups for it to be an issue with the fundamentals. So far all I’ve found that actually works is compensating and living with it.

I agree with you on tuning the arrow but my Longbow is only 37-9lbs at my 29" draw and I have to get to some targets at 50 yards so heavy arrows drop like lead and would have to aim way up over target to hit center.
@JW-bw8nj40 минут бұрын
You'd definitely be much better off shooting 600-700 spine arrows with a normal tip weight for your 37-39 lb bow than to load the front up on a 500 spine arrow to try to make it work. The loaded up 500 spine arrows would sink like crazy at 50 yards!

I am fairly green... when it comes to archery. I don't hunt. I'm trying to shoot indoor paper @ 20yrs. And hopefully foam 3D targets...when I learn. I don't want to string crawl or use the point of the arrow for a sight pin... or learn gapping. I want to learn instinctive. Arrow tuning:::: Someone had said... longer arrows fly better. It stuck in my head. So I buy the GT 500's for my bows. And I try to tune them full length. Usually 100 or 125g points with the alum. incerts that come with the arrows. So I shoot unfletched...to see weak or stiff.. and adjust that with the point or both point & cutting. And when the bare shaft flies straight... I fletch them up. So... that's how I learned to bare shaft or tune a arrow. I have a 28"-ish draw. 43lb. recurve and 40lb. longbows. So your saying.... pick how long you want the arrows... which I'm thinking shorter arrows should fly faster so that could be good. So 30" would work for me. then... load it up with weight...until it flies...to where your looking.. Right hand shooter.. left is too stiff... right is too weak. Get the right weight out front until it hits where your looking. Now you remove that fletching...arrow is going to be way too weak and hit the bag nock left...for a right handed shooter. The fletching...correcting...is what's making that arrow fly to desired impact.
@baraksinz3 жыл бұрын
A little late to the party, but maybe I can help a little. An arrow’s spine can be we weakened by adding more weight to the front. An arrow’s spine can be stiffened by shortening the arrow or removing weight from the front. Basically, you can tune the arrows by adjusting the length of the shaft or by adjusting the weight of the point. Doesn’t really matter how you tune them just as long as you get an arrow that flies well. Not really any plus or minus to having longer or shorter arrows, unless you have a specific weight or length you are trying to meet for some reason.

I’d like to know how many pounds pull that bow is. I have been of the belief also, that more weight up from dinamically weakens the spine. I have a 50# bow on order and the maker says I cannot tune my 500’s in it. Impossible he says. I can sell all the new shafts I have, but if I don’t have to, I won’t. Will a 50# trad bow shoot 500 spine arrows if there is enough weight up front? Or should I try the victories?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Жыл бұрын
It all depends on how long they are, this is a 49@28” bow, I draw about 27.” as with my recurve as well, I shoot 500’s all the time with 250-275 grains up front but my shafts are cut to 28” some 28.5” so if you’re drawing further than that and need them any longer you’ll want to go to a 400 spine or stay around 200-225gr total point weight 👍🏻

First of all, can you stop calling your bow a longbow - it isn't. You are using a traditional barebow; has a recurve element which longbows do not have. Also, I understand adding weight to the shaft will weaken it but if you cut your shafts to the correct bow weight to start with, you won't have that issue.

bla bla bla bareshaft, copypasta in each video. What no body mentions is the arrow nock position relative to pupil of eye!

the real challenge is to be able to shoot any arrow with any bow. None of this turning nonsense.

Well, you can shoot any arrow out of any bow with out all this tuning nonsense. But once you get to stiff or to weak they’re going to come out of you bow sideways. That’s the reason people miss left or right. If you want to hit what your looking at. You had better take Jeff’s advice and tune the arrows.
