Thank you. I have this exact model, and it has been sitting unused in a cool room for too long with so many of these very issues. I had started to notice the problem years ago and found no help available (reason it continued to sit unused). Decided it was time to try again and to give this machine the much needed maintenance it deserves and I am so very happy to see that you have answered so clearly how to go about doing this. This is such a wonderful time we live in when people can support each other from all over the world, I live in rural Canada, no service for my sewing machine anywhere close, so I willing love to learn how to do things myself with the help of wonderful people like you! Thank you!

Thank you for posting your very helpful lecture/demo! My wife's 6430 had seized up after a few minutes of disuse. I followed your disassembly and assessment advice and used a penetrating oil spray to unstick everything from the top driveshaft to the completely stuck control knobs. Once I got the main shaft turning a bit by hand, I removed the handwheel and put the end of the shaft into the chuck of my 3/8" battery powered portable drill motor. I ran that gently while spraying anything that look at all stuck or resistant, then used it for run-in. I highly recommend doing this when the drive motor and belt can't do the job themselves. My other trick was to buy some belt dressing spray at the local auto parts store. This helped with main drive belt slippage, although I have ordered a replacement belt, just to be sure. (The 6430 does not have a tension idler for the main drive belt -- I notice Husqvarna got smarter with subsequent models.) Anyway, thanks again for your assistance!

PERFECT! You have a very professional, well presented video that assisted me to cure all of my wife's 45 year old Viking 6000 ills. Most of the time used was straight stitch which did not exercise all of the parts. Thanks for your time and skill sharing.

I’ve been successfully bringing back my 1973 Viking 6030, first time repair person, all from reading tips online and KZbin. This was the final problem I had. The bottom knob wouldn’t pull out. This vid helped me a lot. Thank you!!! 😀🌹😀

Got my Viking 6030 model working again, after it had completely seized up. Thanks very much for your video! So helpful!!! The handwheel was completely rigid, nothing worked. It took two days to heat up, scrub out with alcohol, and lube with Triflow Silicone Oil to get it all working smoothly again. I also adjusted the needle timing and bobbin Shuttle race to work perfectly. I can sew again, hurrah!!!! It is a bit stiff occasionally. I will do another complete cleaning with better solvent to get this machine humming like a dream. I wonder if I can open up the base screws (not motor housing but big screws holding the mechanism to the base. I wonder if there are more parts to clean and lube down there. What do you think? So happy I found your video and it gave me the confidence to open up the machine. I had to be tenacious and not give up so easily. I saved $400 on this repair. Thank you so much! Subscribed.

Spot on. Thank you. The shaft for the buttonholer in my machine is well seized and out of sync just like the one in this video. I've used a lot of heat and lubricant so far and it still wont budge...Yet... At least I know I am on the right track thanks to this video. Thank you!

So excited to find your post. My inherited 6430 has always sewn beautifully but I took the cam out & seem to have forced the stitch selector. No movement in zigzag component at all, flywheel only turns half way ... the repairer I took it to said he would bin it but it has huge sentimental value. Cam is ok, possibly the cam gears? The outer part of the selector turns well but doesn't move the inner part with the colours zigzag etc. After your post the other dials are moving a lot better so thankyou. Not having a lot of luck with a Viking Husqvarna repairer in the UK if anyone can recommend someone.

I tried to use my button holer for the first time in several years. At first it wasn't working, and I took the cover off and got the tab to engage. Thanks a bunch for the great video!!! It is now working as I turn the knob from 1 through 4 and doing the correct stitches, however, the feed dog is not engaged, so I had to pull the fabric through manually to get a button hole. The feed dog engages properly when stitching straight or zig zag - just not with the knob for the button holer pulled out. I also don't have any cams to check the other stitches. Any ideas?

I am the original owner of the Viking 6530 USA model. It worked beautifully for many years. I probably pushed it too hard when I got canvas stuck. After watching your videos - thank you so much - I thought I could fix the timing. But when I set it up the hand wheel would not crank and it broke in my hands. Where can I go to get a replacement? And which compatible part would work? Then, is the oiling the same for this part of the machine?

Thank you for showing this video. I just got a Similar 6010 machine with two stuck controls. I looked at some of the penetrating oil, that you can get in car accessories shops. If seems they focus on removing old rust. But here you want to dissolve old oil. Do you need to look for some special kind of "penetrating oil". Some consider WD40 as a penetrating oil and others do not. I hope you might have got some guidance on this.
@InStitches

The penetrating oil often doesn't remove the residue and the parts need to be disassembled and deep cleaned. Thanks.

I would think the penetrating oil would have to be wiped off before applying lubricating oil so the lubricant doesn't become diluted. Or doesn't it matter?

Thank you for the help. I recently got a Viking 6430 at a garage sale. It is in working order except the stitch selector knob is completely stuck in the straight/zig-zag stitch position. I have removed the rear access plate and do not see anything broken. It feels like something is jammed when I try to turn the dial, but the straight and zig-zag stitching comes out OK. Do you have any advice? Thanks again.

I have only worked on these Husqvarna machines, the can be so stiff that the are complete locked up..... but with a lot of lube, and soms heat, the mostly come to life. The only 2 problems i come acros almost always failing are the cam stack if its not cracked, it will in a short time, the take up arm slide are not that often broken, mostly the break if the mechanism is stiff and it is forced

I'm about to throw in the towel on my wife's Model 6040. It sat unused for a very long time. Recently, she started sewing on it again but experienced a problem which resulted in a very hot motor. It was mentioned that this series sewing machines originally did not require periodic oiling and I suspect there is a great deal of drag throughtout the machine which overtaxed the motor. I've tried lubricating all the obvious exposed locations but I fear the same design philosophy that was to keep the factory lubrication in place is also defeating my oil from getting into what ever location that is creating the drag, which is quite substantial. I'd love to get this machine running again in top fashion but trying to pinpoint the source of resistance and the lack of oiling ports normally found on most machines has me very frustrated. Any help or suggestions woud be very much appreciated.

Update on the wife's 6040. It lives!!! Two problems solved, one with heat and the other by properly relocating the buttonholer cam. We applied lots and lots of heat using a hand held hair dryer, copious amounts PB Blaster followed up with real sewing machine oil. Hint: use the PB Blaster outdoors if possible, It has a really strong smell! The problem with the buttonholer, after we freed up the knob, was that the two halves of the buttonholer didn't line up. Once the dog and slot were lined up it now works as it should. The wife is absolutely enamored with how it now runs, so smooth and quiet.

What type of oil are you using? I'm working on one now using 3 in 1 oil, is that ok for the longevity of the machine or do I need to use something else?
@InStitches

I think 3 in 1 should be okay but if unsure try getting your hands on sewing machine oil.

3 n 1 is a 20W oil. NOT suitable for sewing machines from everything I've read. It will evaporate leaving a sticky residue.
