Hand clapping, foot stomping, tambourine beating pentecostal shouting music like only the institutional radio choir can produce in a very rare rehearsal recording.

Hailing from Newark, New Jersey, I remember attending Institutional Church of God In Christ when I was a lad on Sunday nights. I could remember listening to them on the radio as we pulled up to the church and hear them outside once we got out of the car and going in would blow you away! it was a phenomenal movement of God and an impartation. An amazing thing was discovered after I moved residence to South Carolina. Bishop Brown and I was talking about when Mattie Moss Clark was there. I remember going to the restroom and of course you know it was bumper to bumper people in the house. Well, while I was a little guy going through the crowd, I got to the back and bumped into this young man and looked up, and guess who it was, then, Minister Ronald E. Brown. A couple of decades later, we connected in ministry. Now I must say, that rehearsal sounds good but nobody I mean nobody had church like Faith Tabernacle Deliverance Temple had church. The raw power of God lit that place like none other. Blessings!

OK! Why don't churches sound like this any longer?! Baby, sometimes you got to go back. I will put my degrees up on shelf and go in! We've become too refined if you ask me! M-F I'm beyond professional, but when I go to church, I need to hear foot stomping, hand clapping, and tambourines!

You got the TRUE revelation! LOL :-) I think one of the reasons you don't hear this kind of church sound, is that many modern Black churches have never HEARD the older, congregationally-based sound....all they've heard are truncated, "stereotyped" choirs in movies. All our older Black Gospel music from the 1940's--early 1970's from the Missionary Baptist and Pentecostal churches needs to be: 1. Listened to and classified by genre; 2. Then the instrumentalists--especially keyboard and bass guitarists--need to LEARN the music; 3. Then choral directors need to TEACH THEIR CHOIRS THESE ANOINTED SONGS, by copying the LYRICS and having the choirs LEARN THE WORDS ACCURATELY, WITH CRISP DICTION; 4. Then performing these songs in Sunday morning worship on a REGULAR basis, so that congregations can HEAR and SING ALONG with them. Also, choirs need to return to RECORDING THESE OLDER SONGS, complete with TAMBOURINES and other percussion, so that we can once again market and distribute this music to the wider Christian community!

We don't fast, have prayer meetings and humble ourselves before the Lord anymore. We don't emphasize the necessity of being filled with the Holy Ghost in order to live a saved and a holy life anymore. It's all about flesh and what God can do for me. The message of repentance, sanctification and holiness has gone out the window to draw the crowds and large offerings. At one time, the leaders preached holiness to weed out those who were not serious about God. Now they are afraid to preach it out of fear of losing the tithes and offerings that support their lavish lifestyles. Just my two cents. :)

I grew up in Brooklyn New York and remember visiting this church on many occasions. I was a member of Refuge Church of Christ on Greene Avenue in Brooklyn. Our choir sang many of their songs and my mother had all of their albums. This takes me back to when the praise of the saints was pure and free; people weren't ashamed to praise God with their whole heart. We worshipped the Lord with praise and dance. You gave everything in your praise.

Wow this really took me back. Especially the Yes chorus afterward. I can listen to this and hear the beauty of total praise. Cogic would end every praise break with a declaration of YES. That’s because the blessings of the Lord are YEA and Amen...

I’m Moorish American and follow the Kemetic Orthodoxy, however I grew up Pentecostal Holiness in Brooklyn, NYC and remember the joyous and uplifting praises that came out of crying, shouting and dancing before the Lord. I no longer follow the doctrines of the Church, however my roots will always remain in the praise of Pentecost and there’s no spiritual or universal law against it.

I wish some people would come back and read these comments with an objective ear sometimes......I certainly understand the nostalgia many feel for this type of buckin'....but it's pure conjecture and nostalgia. The entity we call God and his universe does not require this. But as humans, if this makes you somehow feel "closer to God" then so be it. But don't think this somehow was a better day or people "had it" then and don't now. All they had was a closer connection to the slave traditions which resulted in this type of Pentecostalism. We are in a new and different age that has grown beyond this --- just as African Americans grew beyond their - original-- African worship and dance practices, under white slave master rule..and thought of those as undesirable.
