Your videos have been so helpful! I'm in PA, and some steps are a little different but just seeing how to properly perform in order to pass was helpful. I passed my test yesterday and just wanted to say thanks for the uploads.

Thank you! You do not have to verbally say the steps out loud, but take a moment to think about the steps and make sure you have performed them all properly. If not, you may make a correction by verbally acknowledging the step that was missed, ie, "I would have closed the curtain to provide privacy at the beginning of the skill and opened it before my final handwashing." Sometimes, you may have to actually physically perform the missed step when asked to. Good luck!

Either way is acceptable for the exam. You are dipping a clean toothbrush into a cup of clean water. There is no infection control violation there. As long as the toothbrush bristles get wet before you put toothpaste on them, either method you use will work. Thanks and good luck!

It is always a good idea to keep your gloves clean for your patient. Would you want gloves in your mouth that had touched multiple surfaces and items, many of which may or may not be clean? For the exam, this point is not counted heavily, however, think of the potential for contamination. It is always a good policy to keep your gloves clean by limiting contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. Doing all prep work before putting on gloves is a good habit to get into. Thanks.

The head of the bed is adjusted for patient comfort at the end of the skill. If the patient wants to remain sitting, that is fine. The ENTIRE bed needs to be in the lowest position (relative to the floor), so if you raised the bed height to be more comfortable for you, it has to be lowered at the end of the skill. Raising the entire bed is different than the head of the bed. Good luck!

Thank you for your comment. However the method of teeth cleaning (up/down, back/forth, 45 degree angle, circles) is NOT graded on the CNA exam. The overall procedure is what is graded. However, it is good to understand correct brushing techniques so thank you for your input.

That depends on what mistakes you make! Each step is weighted differently based on importance. You don't have to do everything perfectly, but you need to make sure that you get the important steps covered (infection control, safety, patient rights). Good luck!

For the exam, the toothbrush is discarded because that "patient" will not be there tomorrow. Since the "patient" is another testing candidate, you do not want to put the contaminated toothbrush back in the drawer where another testing candidate may pick it up for use on another "patient". The denture brush is only used on testing center owned dentures, not in patient's mouths, so it is not "contaminated" in the same sense and may be used by multiple testing candidates. Thank you.

Question! When you say "Review the Steps of your Skill" does that mean that you verbally walk them through what you just did step by step? Also, when you are making "Corrections" to your skill, say you missed a step, how are corrections done to a skill? I hope you don't mind my asking, I plan on challenging the CNA in my state and your KZbin Channel is an amazing resource. :)

in the skills book it says to "wipe residents mouth with towel and remove towel" then, after placing soiled linen in appropriate receptacle to then throw the toothbrush away, then go clean the emesis basin. In the video she leaves the towel, washes the emesis basin, then puts the towel in the linen. Which is the correct order for testing?

You do not have to say the steps out loud, but you will need to mentally review the steps you have performed to make sure you did not miss anything or do something wrong. If you need to make a correction, say "Correction: I would have _____" before you say "My skill is done". The correction must be made BEFORE you say your skill is finished. Good luck!

I find it interesting that the toothbrush is discarded after cleaning teeth but the denture brush is not discarded at the end of the "Mouth care with dentures" skill, yet I would have thought they were equally contaminated. I have a question: Do you see any problem if I were to put on the gloves just before I open the toothbrush wrapper and apply toothpaste to the brush, rather than waiting until just before I put the brush in the patient's mouth? Are the wrapper and toothpaste contaminated?

How is the skills test graded? You have to perform 3 skills and the instructor uses a checklist. How many mistakes can you make before you fail?

It does not matter. Take care of all of the items, but the order does not matter. Throwing the toothbrush away while it is in your hand is a little quicker, but these are not testable points. Good luck.

Do you need to put a towel or something on the patient's table to put your supplies on during the skills test?

I have a question. The part where you said dip the toothbrush in the cup of water my instructor said it is critical not to dip toothbrush into the cup but instead should hold the toothbrush over the basin and pour water onto the toothbrush. Is this wrong?

would the examiner fail me if i put my gloves on before putting toothpaste on the toothbrush,get the water etc.?

Everything you touch with your gloves will contaminate the gloves before you use them on your patient...would you want those gloves in your mouth after they have touched all those potentially dirty surfaces? Put your gloves on immediately before brushing the teeth to keep them clean for the patient.

I need tips on oral swabbing. Most of my patients are mouth breathers and the inside of their mouths are too sensitive for a toothbrush.

+Lulu Every patient is unique with individual needs and conditions that would require individualized accommodations. This is the role of the care plan in patient care. The RN assesses the patient's specific needs and formulates a plan to accommodate those needs. These instructions are provided in the form of a care plan to ensure that each patient gets the appropriate care for them. Unfortunately, I cannot give you a single technique that will work for all. For instance, some patients may use a lemon-glycerine swab which is used right out the package and swabbed around the mouth to moisten the membranes. Toothettes may be used to clean gums and teeth but must be moistened with water first. Some may even require toothpaste, depending on the needs of the patient. It is best to check the patient's care plan (or with the treating nurse) for specific instructions. Thank you for your question.

Nah...why put the toothbrush in the cup and then have the patient sip from the cup? no mouthwash?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 8 жыл бұрын
Mouthwash is not indicated in the care plan. Therefore, it will not be used. Please refer to the new skills videos to view the care plan for the exam. The toothbrush was new, so there is no problem with wetting it in the cup of water and using that cup for rinsing. Certainly, the ideal way for someone to brush their teeth is over the sink - but this patient cannot do so; therefore we must make accommodations in the best way possible. Other methods may be used if preferred. This is only one possible way of performing this skill that meets all testing criteria. Follow the care plan. Best of luck.

as a hygienist - brushing the teeth up and down is NOT the correct method. instruct students to do a gentle 45 degree angle doing tiny circles back and forth towards the gums.
