After years of doing "reliability packages" to 1911's, at some point I started to polish freed ramps on all autoloaders as a force of habit. Good stuff!

Exactly. I remember seeing "polished feed ramp" as a selling point in the not too distant past. It's simple enough physical science to explain. the smoother the surface, the lower the friction. Whether it's trying to hold on to a copper jacket, fouling, etc. a slick polished surface will greatly reduce the rate of build up which will, in turn, make it that much more reliable, longer, in addition to the added benefit of bringing less friction to the bullet tip on its way up the ramp.

@@Trains-With-Shane Polishing is a great way to reduce friction but, inevitably, repeated cartridge interfacing on polished surfaces will necessarily impart wear and marking onto those surfaces and, over time, unpolish them (e.g. scratch them up a little). In theory, it's possible to get a similar effect to polished (reduced friction) by basically microstippling feedramps -- basically giving them a very, very, _very_ subtle "golf ball pattern." This isn't something that's possible to do by hand, but it could be done on a 6-axis machine, and it'd offer far better friction reduction than polishing would. Obviously it'd be nuts expensive to actually do, but it'd basicall be friction reducion on a whole other level.

@@darinr9424 I "hear" that if it's not, you'll run into problems with hollow point ammo on the 1911 I run a self defense ammo that acts like hollow point but retains the point... so yea, I've never had any issues with any ammos. But I've never run actual hollow point as the gun wasn't designed for it.

in general polishing contact surfaces within a gun will massively smooth out the action and fix a great many issues that can crop up, especially feed issues. most people consider ak rifles to have a fairly clunky rough action but if you polish the hell out of the hammer face, bottom of the bolt carrier that rides along the hammer face, as well as the top and bottom rails of the receiver that the bolt carrier rides on the action suddenly feels like glass. fixes a lot of feed issues that can occur when using commbloc surplus mags that all have slightly different tolerances too

This issue reminds me of the seemingly eternal debate that goes on in the motorcycle engine rebuilding world. Some guys insist that it’s totally unnecessary and a waste of time to polish combustion chambers and exhaust ports. But anyone who’s witnessed the buildup of carbon on both areas, especially on two strokes, but also on four strokes, knows what a pain it is to deal with. A highly polished aluminium surface makes the heavy buildup of deposited carbon far less likely. It’s a no brainer. In every expensive firearm, the areas were the rounds feed are always highly polished. And again, there’s far less chance of deposits (in a weapon that $hits where it eats), and a smoother, faster feed. Plus, polished surfaces are less prone to corrosion. No brainer. Thank you for sharing. Nice work. Oh, I would plug the barrel before introducing it to all that abrasive material. It can get stuck in the rifling. One backflush with boiling water was our solution in the bush. Long time ago.

I usually plug in a soft dowel before I polish near a chamber or muzzle for that reason, tight enough to seal the opening but loose enough to not damage a crown, chamber, or throat. I agree completely and I honestly believe the ones against it are in the "Im alright with good enough" camp for workmanship quality. A mirror surface is much less likely to rust or collect carbon as you say so in my opinion the performance is definitely worth the effort invested in the process.

Motorcycle mechanic here (builder and tuner). Polishing combustion chambers and exhaust ports is a total waste of time on 4 stroke engines. If you are using the correct fuel and the A/F ratio is set correctly for the carburation/injection system you are using, the buildup of carbon will be minimal and at a level very easy to clean if the head needs to come off. There was a trend a few years back of polishing inlet ports, but that was counter productive as it allowed the fuel droplets to condense on the port walls which a satin/matte finish didn’t allow to happen. Mirror polishing the ports and combustion chamber is a waste of time and money.

Solid work. I'm a fellow armorer and as soon as I saw the round hang I thought to myself that it has to be a burr on the back of the ramp. It's easy to miss a small burr in manufacture, then the bolt unlocking will pull that burr around and present it above the ramp. Nice polish work! SOLGW is a REALLY good company and I appreciate you mentioning twice that they would've made this right for the customer.

Did a lot of civilian rifles and dabbled in the SOT stuff here and there, doing the occasional duty rifle for individual officers/deputies who worked for departments that allowed personal rifle use on the job. Nothing big. I've since closed my doors and just build the occasional rifle for a friend here and there anymore.

That second bevel on the feed ramp is exactly what needs to be done on a 1911 barrel ramp. I can't see having a feed ramp with a sharp edge that the bullet scrapes against on it's way in. Nice work!

I have many complete Colt AR's of various vintages and Colt assembled M16 uppers. I never knew about the second stage bevel that Colt put on the feed ramps. Nice extra touch IMO. I always learn something from your videos and admire your technical expetise. It is a pleasure to watch a gunsmith who really knows their trade. I can't find one anywhere in my neck of the woods in GA.

It might also be the difference between the M16 and M4 ramps. It would have been interesting if he had tried the feed a round from the other side of the mag to see if it was just the right side or both sides that had the issue. But the smith may have done that but did not film it or that he knew he was going to polish both sides anyway and it did not really make a pratical difference. But as a demonstration of a problem it was good. At least 556 bullets usually are about the same profile. (just pointy bullets not flat points and HP as in some other cartridges though OAL lenght can be an issue also.)

I saw the area of the right side guide ramp which appeared to be unfinished leaving the shelf (for lack of a better term) in the path of the projectile nose. I also love that you've taken the time to explain that the Cratex tips are used to form the final shape, while a felt tip and rouge are need to achieve the true polish. Joined the army in 75' learned about the m-16. I did about 10 years active & reserve. My last unit I was marksmanship NCO...but I never realised the "left /right" feed lugs because of the double stack (light bulb goes on!) Thank you! I’ve never had an issue with the standard unpolished m4 feed ramps. I do like to take the sharp corners off though, because in several ar’s I’ve noticed they have a tendency to gouge the brass pretty good. Sometimes even dent it. No bueno for reloading when that happens

Mating the m4 feed ramps of the extension to the receiver is a given for ALL qualified builders,, Polishing is just a way to mate the surfaces so the projectile tip does not jump from hitting a bump/burr/mismatch.. ..thanks for the video.

Im going to this to all my Ars. I don’t have any feeding issues but I like the idea of it and it should make them run smoother. looking at the condition of that AR (filthy) I would guess the owner damaged that barrel extension trying to clean it with a screw driver, those burs didn’t pop up out of nowhere and obviously the gun has been running by how disgustingly dirty it is.

Spot on....i would even speculate the owner collapsed the upper or broke it down, cleaned from the bolt end using a cheap tool with metal fittings ramming in and out only cleaning the bore and made contact with the back edge of the ramp. A few possibilites but certainly 100% the owners fault.

Several years ago I had the same problem. After looking at it I lightly polished it and made it much better but made it into a safe queen because I was tired of it jamming. The thought of ruining it made me not go further. Now I see how much you polished one makes me want to take it out and do a much more aggressive job.

Looks good but will the feed ramp rust without any coating or finish on it now? I know it wears off anyway but only on the specific spots where the cartridge touches the ramp and any corrosion would be worn off to keep the surface smooth, I would worry about the surfaces where there is no contact from the cartridge, is that something that should or should not be of concern?

The feed ramps should not rust. A polished surface has little to no voids for contaminants to settle as well as reducing the surface area for corrosive action. Hope this helps.

Mags can be responsible for feeding issues also. Along with buffer weight/spring tension ratio. Breaking the dremel out for the feedramps is one of those things you do only when none of the others work.

I have had similar problems with 2 builds one 5.56 another 7.62x39. I used a diamond dremel chainsaw bit and massaged the ramps; i then used sand paper wrapped in a small dowel and went up in grit to 2000 until it was like a mirror. This worked perfectly and I did not remove the barrel on either; good video and info BTW.

I remember back about 15 years ago, right when the AR craze hit, I gathered all the build intel on various manufacturers. Most used the cut out feed ramps, except for one guy in TX. I called him to ask several things about his quality of work, testing, etc. And when I asked him about not using cut out feed ramps, he just stated he never saw use for it in his military background, and that a quality build wouldn’t need them. I was very new to this platform at the time, and eventually went with a DD, which has been operating without issues since. I do believe the gentleman in TX still does not cut the feed ramps as of today, but I may be incorrect?? Either way, great video, and informative. 👍

The logic of “the military don’t do it durrrr” is retarded. Because cut feed ramps are literally called “M4 feed ramps.” IE: the rifle the military adopted called the M4, which featured extended cut feed ramps. Nowadays almost every upper you can buy has M4 profile feed ramps.

I have an old Auto-Ordnance 1911 (mid to early 1980's production) that I had the feed ramps polished on. That pistol runs like a champ, no issues at all with any and all ammunition that I try and use in it. HP, JHP, lead heads, mixed ammo, you name it. I also have a 5.56 standard civilian 16" upper that got jammed up firing .223 after having been used to fire 5.56 before. Possibly even exclusively. There may even have been a 5.45 round involved but I don't think it's likely the problem or that it was even fired in this rifle. I'm just putting out everything I can think of It's an old PSA that had been fine before the jamming event which occurred after it sat in the closet for a year or two. There doesn't appear to be any damage. I would just like to remove the live round .223) that's wedged in receiver and go from there if it's still usable. Any ideas from the AR community out there?

Great video. Very educational. I'm asking this as a non-gunsmith basement gun builder guy: why polish both ramps when only one had the "bur" and was hanging up? Might as well while your're there I get that but curious. Also I would imagine doing this would void any warranty SOL may provide regarding the barrel? First off awesome video! I would have never thought about something so small and simple causing such an issue! Thanks for the intel! But do you think it’s possible that the headspace/timing may have been off a tad bit since it wasn’t the factory BCG? I’ve seen it done with .50 cal machine guns during my time in service. Some of the threads became marred on the barrel and it wouldn’t feed properly. That could have been the cause of the peening on the locking lugs, however I would expect to see that on all of them, not just the first two on the right. Thoughts?

I had a 1911 come in a few years ago with feed issues. without changing the geometry I did a polish like this and removed the coating on the ramp to a mirror finish by the method presented here. Worked flawlessly. There are those in all communities who seem to be against it but upon asking the reason I seldom get logical or rational answers. Im not against having civil discourse with someone or considering a view different than my own, I merely require to do so you convince me with logical argument of your stance.

I was having exactly the same issue with my Stagg but the failure to feed was on both sides and only with the Jersey-legal 10 round metal mags (read into that all you want...). I didn't polish the ramps but a quick hit with a properly sized round file solved the problem. After watching this, polishing the ramps are now on my to-do list. Thanks for the great video.

same issue here... rounds not feeding, hanging up. I noticed big gouges on the ones that did chamber. I couldn't find anything online at the time, so I looked and saw those burs... said "what the heck" and got out the jewelers file and went to work. Runs flawless now.

That was a fine solution to the primary complaint. At any point would you want to have a good look at the bolt lug engagement surface on the barrel extension to make sure there weren’t any further defects? I’m thinking you would be able to pick up some irregular wear patterns on the bolt.

I think he meant to say bolt carrier. The owner changed to a BCM bolt carrier, which could have chewed up the lugs, but probably not.

BCM has a propriety barrel nut for there hand guards...... They held the barrel with a reaction rod to remove and install the barrel nuts..... That may have damaged it during the swap. 🤠

I had one with a similar problem with a Colt Competition model ar5.56, same side same place. Filed sanded and polished the feed ramps, reassembled everything and it worked beautifully. Mine was new, I know the problem was bad machining.

That weapon appears to have never been cleaned. I clean my ARs immediately upon returning from the range. If I spend the money on something, I maintain it.

"maintained" and "cleared after every range trip" are not interchangeable. My guns are cleaned when I feel like it, or they get super filthy, the only thing I clean after every range trip is the light lens. My guns are also very well maintained.

Look up bcm filthy 14, never cleaned round count was 28k. Only malfuctions were ejector springs.

Nice work! but I am curious about one thing. The polish looks very nice, and I'm sure will help prevent some wear being so smooth, but with the actual finish removed from the ramps what is going to stop them from corroding? Both from age and use, as well as wear from friction over time? are the ramps going to now need to be permanently kept lubricated to prevent damage and corrosion?

Little dremel and a green cratex wheel that fits the radius. Light hand, keep moving. Pretty forgiving, clik or two rougher than jeweler's rouge. You'd probably be good at it. Practice on a piece of scrap.

So i got a PSA upper to go with my Aero lower and I noticed my feed ramps look like your finished product. Until now I thought it was a defect even though I never had any feed issues aside from operator error(I was too gentle charging the bolt and caused a jam, haven't had that happen since I charge it like I mean it.) Glad to know it isn't a deformity/defect but a good feature. Thanks!

There’s a point where they just don’t feed correctly. The “middle”! Small ramps that just guide the tip work or large ramps work. Medium sized ramps can bind or bite the bullet’s ogive. The only recourse when this happens is just what is done in this video. Working smaller ramps have the advantage of more lug strength. If it ain’t broke.....

Chad updated the information for the video but it was also posted on the SOTAR facebook page, the owner used a reaction rod to install the hand guard and the reaction rod caused the damage.

My Ballistic Advantage 308 barrel does this too. I’ve filed some burrs from the feed ramps and it is significantly better and actually cycles every round now. It still has issues though. It actually was cutting a deep grove in the bullet jacket when feeding up either side and destroying the tip of the bullet. Now it just leaves a visible line and bends the tip if not FMJ. After watching this I’m going to try it again and actually polish them. I haven’t reached out to Ballistic Advantage. The rifle was a parts build by myself and I just assumed they wouldn’t warranty since it isn’t a prebuilt upper or complete firearm, maybe they would though. I’ve parts built a couple of AR-15s that both run really good with very minor tweaking needed. This was my third build ever and first LR308 still a simple project but definitely taking more work.

I'm amazed at how many barrels come with burs on the back side barrel extension at the feed ramps. Its been a big problem. Even if they feed rounds properly, the scratches and gouges that they cause on the sides of the bullet tips causes horrible accuracy problems. I wish manufacturers would address this more often. Even barrels from higher end companies have burs.

yeah the first thing i would have done was spray that barrel extn down good with something like rem oil or something and clean it off with some rags at least. im surprised he did this job without cleaning it to get a better look at what he was working with, not saying he didnt do a good job, just something that came to mind.
