@MIND Well yeah, but KZbin views = education. As cynical as we can allow ourselves to be, it's hard to watch drivers behaving like idiots with Ashley's withering commentary and then go and do exactly the same thing yourself unless you're stratospherically un-self-aware or really really don't give a crap about anyone else. And those two camps are lost to saving anyway.

I remember a driving lesson once where my instructor *fell asleep* during thr lesson He woke up after a couple minutes to tell me to do a turn-in-the-road - he told me what to do, put his sunglasses on, and fell asleep again! I was boxed in by 2 cars, no idea what to do. Decided to try to get home as quick as - luckily I was only a couple minutes away. Once I got home and parked, I woke him up and told him I wasn't paying him. He said fine, fell asleep again and stayed there for 2 hours. I got a debt collection letter a couple days later for an unpaid lesson!

After I just got my licence I was cut off on a highway by a single person in a clearly speeding driving school vehicle as they tried to make an off ramp. I did look them up online and left them a bad review, describing what had happened. Maybe that seems a bit harsh, but I do hold road safety in high regard and I do believe driving instructors should set a good example.

Good for you Ashley. You are 100% correct, in any industry if you put garbage in you get garbage out. I see so many people in the city I live in that make me wonder how they got their license. Do I make mistakes? Yes. Do I sometimes let situations get the better of me? Yes. I enjoy watching your videos as I do learn something even though I drive on the right hand side and the laws were I am are different. But when it comes to driving safety it is all the same. Thank you for doing what you do. Calling people out for their actions which can have a long term affect is the right thing to do. There's an instructor who keeps parking on double yellows outside our office for cigarette breaks. The office is on a short loop of road on a science park, which means he's effectively parked on a left-hand bend with about 30 m visibility for anyone needing to pass him. As well as the double yellow lines, there are signs at the loop entrance which read, "Strictly no parking on this loop road". Worse, he always has a student with him. What kind of example is this setting?

100% right to show these Ashley. I qualified as an ADI in November and super conscious of my driving standard now. It's up to us to set an example to other road users, not just pupils. And I've taken your ethos of we can all help each other out. As the examiner in my part 3 said "teach the way you drive" I'd rather be a couple of minutes late to a lesson if it means not doing something stupid to get there. I wonder if some of the instructors from the larger schools are under a bit of pressure to get pupils through

Ashley, I 100% commend your video and attitude on this subject. I retired a couple of years ago after holding my ADI for over 20 years and one of my main reasons for retiring was the poor attitude and in particular poor standards shown by other ADIs in my area. I found that the larger franchised ADIs were among the worse offenders and as I was approaching retirement age had enough of fighting against the poor standards shown by some. Fully support your channel and the education message your attempt to disseminate to the public and any ADI out there who feels you are being unfair really needs to take a good hard look at themselves!

I am over fifty but have only been a driver for a few years; although I've driven wagons, Bray shovels and FLTs internally at Pilks since I was pre-twenty. I always try and drive as perfectly as possible even though I passed my test over two years ago. I am just not at that level where it's fully automatic, and I believe if you do something correctly often enough it becomes an automatic embedded way. I would rather have good practice embedded in me rather than easy and bad habits. I appreciate your honesty and showing what should be done because as a new road driver it's easy to feel bullied or feel provoked to do something that you feel is not right; even though I was past fifty when I passed. You have shown me many situations that I now know are the right thing to do, and if other drivers want to honk or overtake me to take the risk then that is up to them; good luck to them with their shitty driving. I didn't know about filtering, never taught it, and I believed people were pushing in. Longer vehicles needing more space, middle of bridges and to give space before that situation. Too many to count. Thanks Ashley, and I'm still watching your videos over two years after passing. My older sons are going to put in for their lessons, and I constantly sing your praises to them and we do live in your capture area :)

One of your best and most balanced videos yet Ashley. The bay park clip, you point out the mistake, yet still offer up all the reasons it may have been legit (refresher/international license holder etc), that wouldn't have occurred to most people, before coming to the conclusion on balance that it was an awful clip. Instructors need to hold road safety in the highest regard. Not just teach 'em quick, take in the cash. In the end, it will catch them out. If someone is driving poorly and they say who taught them, there is a reputation on the line. Bad reputation is no good for future business. Keep calling them out.

Frankly sat at a set of lights in a car not moving... what's the problem? It's not illegal to sit and write in a notebook while sat at traffic lights is it? The old argument about "well someone could be stood in front of the car and you didn't see them"... which implies the person will set off, not having looked at all, which is just stupid. But where is the evidence that while completely stationary, it's any more dangerous than any one of the thousand things anyone does at the lights? I'll repeat that so long as you do the normal checks before moving off. it does not matter if you were picking your nose while analysing the stain on the roof fabric, chugging a bottle of water, resting a headache, checking a map, or tapping your phone 5 times to start a call on speaker.

I learnt to drive with an ex Police driving instructor, he was quite a fountain of knowledge and hopefully I absorbed as much as I could. 8 lessons in I was taking my test but unfortunately failed on the first corner out of the test centre. I had to creep forward between closely parked cars either side of the junction into a fairly busy road, the instructor hit the brake as he thought I was pulling out into traffic! Still had to complete the test, everything else I did spot on, frustrating, knowing I'd already failed! So had to book my test again, in the mean time, kept my lessons up, so probably had a further 4 lessons and passed the 2nd time! Even though I questioned the examiners decision to make me do a three point turn in a busy road outside a school at 8.50am when it was really busy, kids crossing the road, cars parked all over, lots of extra traffic etc Literally just past the zig zags of the entrance! I told him it wasn't safe and I'd rather go around a corner and do a 3 point turn in a quieter street, he disagreed and told me it was perfectly safe⚠️😳😲 I think he was just giving me an impossible task and putting me under a lot of unnecessary pressure, I was nervous enough anyway being my 1st test. It took about 10 mins of waiting for a safe gap in the traffic and thankfully my nerves held out, the three point turn was one of my strongest manoeuvres anyway, sadly not on the test anymore! Even as a confident, professional driver with over 30 years driving experience, I'd never dream of doing a three point turn outside a school at the busiest time in the morning⚠️ Crazy guy, I often wonder what kind of person would do that to an inexperienced driving student on their test!

That shows the unpredictability of examiners too. They could have used their discretion to overlook them hitting the brakes in your first test since it didn't make a difference as to whether you had an accident or not since you were creeping. Glad to hear you passed 2nd time!
@pdtech4524
@pdtech4524 2 жыл бұрын
@@cathallynch1 There is no way out of that junction without creeping forward, it's a minor narrow residential side street that gives way into a major very busy road At that time in the morning just after 8.30am you can imagine how busy it is. I was only creeping forward to get a better view because either side of the junction there were closely parked cars which were obstructing my view! At the moment he braked, the front of my car was no further forward than half the width of the parked cars. At that point I had a much better view of approaching traffic each side and was about to stop anyway! I did try to explain what I was doing but he was one of those 'robot' type examiners that did not say a word other than the instructions I had to follow, there was no 'good morning' or any other pleasantries, just the bare minimum communication. It just felt he was going to fail me no matter what, even if I had not failed at that first corner. The school entrance 3 point turn at almost 9am was evidence of that, when there was a much more safer option just further along around a corner. I felt this made me more anxious and more nervous, the 2nd examiner was the complete opposite, very chatty, which helped to relax me and take my mind off the fact it was a driving test, it just felt like driving along with a friend.

A couple of things I have seen a few years ago. 1. A BSM driving school car in the left lane with me in the right lane, approaching a traffic light that started to change from green to red. I started braking and stopped at the light, the instructor in the passenger seat put his hand up and waved the learner on to carry on through the red light. There were no other vehicles behind us so no chance of them being hit from behind if they braked hard, which may have been used as an excuse to not stop. 2. Another BSM instructor, alone in the car and probably on their way to a lesson and trying to find the route. Mobile phone clamped to his right ear with his shoulder, A to Z in his left hand, and steering round a roundabout with just his right hand. Another reason I don't like BSM is that a family friend's son was learning with them for over 2 years, and kept being told he wasn't quite ready to put in for his test. He decided to go to another driving school who took him out for a lesson to see what level he was at, and told him to put in for his test straight away. He did so and was offered a cancellation slot 2 weeks later, he then took his test and sailed straight through. This was before the time of theory tests etc so was just the one driving test. In our opinion it was just BSM stringing him along to keep getting money out of him rather than let him take his test and pass and stop taking lessons with them.

Concerning the first clip, I am a bus driver and had a similar thing happen to me. Came across a driving insyructor parked in a bus stop, with a pupil in the car. I addressed him about it and said it's "his way of teaching". Nowhere near a good enough excuse. The road he was on is not wide enough for two cars to pass when cars are parked in front of the houses. Thankfully, there was space behind him, but what if there wasn't? He would've forced me to stop in the middle of the road and block traffic. This angers me to no end that people don't care about us bus drivers and go ahead and park wherever the damn well please, especially in bus stops.

You do not want everyone driving like they are on test all the time, it would be a nightmare. "Test standard" is a way of driving designed for new drivers to demonstrate they can be responsible, observant, etc. It is expected after your test you will GET BETTER at driving. In particular, decision making should be quicker and more fluid, reactions and controls smoother. Always indicating regardless of need - in an advanced course you will be told to only indicate if it's actually going to be useful to other drivers. This requires extra processing, experience and awareness a student driver isn't expected to have yet. Always driving in the middle of the lane - in an advanced course you're expected to use all your lane as needed to assist with visibility, observation, and traffic flow. Defensive driving - very little expectation in regular lessons or the test to display defensive driving techniques. Forward planning - Also very little expectation in regular lessons and the test to display advanced planning. I get what you're trying to say though... driving standards are appalling. The lack of situational awareness and planning is shocking. However a 'test standard' won't help that much as those are skills that are polished up in advanced courses. The major issue is people are so damn opinionated these days they are always in the right, even when they are driving like an ass, and won't have the right attitude to learn and develop their skill, and will simply argue the good ol' "I've never had an accident" - funny how so many dickweed drivers never have accidents, but manage to leave devastation in their wake!

When we learn to drive we are conscious of everything new in the car, everything we are in a learning mode, a bit like a sponge. As we learn to drive, those absorbed experiences are honed so we can actually handle the car the correct way, and then driving becomes an unconscious experience. We then have to do something new, we have to play act the experience to the examiner to "show them" we are competent to drive and recall facts of driving to them. Once we passed, we slip back into unconscious driving and even into highway hypnosis, but those bad habits we picked up from driving are invisible to us. Add the fact that mobile phones have become an unconscious distraction just as much as the sat nav.

@@kal9001 I don't think they mean driving to "test standard", more that people should perhaps drive like they're always being observed and judged on their driving, because these days they commonly _are_ . From my experience, people don't tend to get better after they pass, though. They tend to get a lot worse, and the worst part is that they often *think* they're better. They'll tend conflate complacency with confidence, demonstrate appalling levels of planning and see hazard perception/response as altogether unnecessary, expecting that hazards should just jump out of their way if they're "in the right". People get more skilled at driving after they pass, but often don't become better drivers.

I wish the police would take dashcam footage seriously, prosecuting or cautioning drivers who are clearly driving badly. It would make it much easier to 'submit' to diffuse the situation if you could be confident that a tailgater/undertaker/lights jumper would be caught later, and the danger of being caught would hopefully make people think twice in case they were caught.

The thing is on a bike, we're even less likely to harm others than pedestrians (going by the government's own review on cycling safety in 2018 were the author had to reluctantly admit this albeit in the smallest footnote possible!), so when we stuff up it's more likely to be ourselves that get hurt, when motorists stuff up, it's pretty much the innocent parties/vulnerable that cop it. Increasingly since the plastic hat brigade started becoming more numerous, the standard of people riding bikes has gone down. The risk homesostasis of helmet wearers is well known, many probably drive in a similar manner.

This pupil was not a confident driver and this joke shook his confidence. he struggled to complete the manouevering exercises in the depot. tbf he probably shouldn't have been a bus driver but the instructor did not do the best for his pupils that day. I thought I'd failed my test halfway through - tried to drive away from a bus stop with the transmission in neutral and instead rolled backwards - and my thought was "thank god, I'll have a chance to just practice driving a bus for half an hour without that idiot blethering in my ear about stuff that should be second nature by the end of day 1"

Where I worked, we used to get regular D[V]SA driving assessments [as instructors]. At least 2 1/2 hours on assessment, including manoeuvers, max permitted number of faults, 7. The level of assessment would be set at the very highest standard, so little if nothing could be 'got away with'....a simple, missed, mirror check, for example [out of the half dozen or so a C+E driver would be expected to conduct, when simply approaching a roundabout....Ashley will know what I mean] would get the pencil moving. Many was the time my managers would have to undergo refresher training simply to meet the required standards of the DSA assessment. Which is not to say, the DVSA assessor is going to have to be a 'better driver'' than the instructor they are assessing! That isn't what conducting an assessment is about! Assessing [in driving] is another story completely. Ask any Examiner, for example? [There is much misconception amongst the ''lay'' driver world concerning driving faults, and driving procedures.] MAny colleagues dreaded the Assessments, but I relished them. It was an opportunity to practice what I preached. I firmly believed that my driving should be an near reet as I could get it, in order to set that example. AFter all, I could find myself having to give a demonstration drive at any time, in any type of vehicle. Not easy to work out a plan in an artic if I had to say 'sorry, I got that wrong, we'll go round and I'll do it again''. But, the biggest danger was thinking one was 'perfect'. Arrogance is the biggest failure point of any Instructor, at whatever stage. A bit of humility as an instructor transmits itself to the student, thus making the student less intimidated, more confident. Nobody will drive perfectly every time, all the time. All a skilled driver can do is to minimise the likelihood of making those errors. I liked my job [it was so varied....Cat C, C+E, D, B, B+E, even A if I could have been bothered...also various types of advanced driver training....] Having been a bus driver for 25 years [when bus drivers had to have hairy backsides...before all this plastic nonsense...or before the DSA got involved with licencing...] beforehand, going into the world of driver education was a breeze, a veritable holiday. Teaching/training all sorts, both licence acquisition, and existing licence holders, was a joy to do. With or without the dual controls [mostly just a brake]...But, it never paid very well. A step on from licence acquisition was the world of assessing and ''coaching'' qualified drivers. But, I'm going to challenge Ashley on the driver education front by saying:- No-one can teach a person to 'drive!' Not if applying the principles of training & education. Hence why I use the term ''licence acquisition!'' For, in order to teach somebody something, first, after identifying the standards required, one then has to conduct some form of 'quality control'....to determine whether the person doing the instructing has achieved the objective? For the Driving Instructor, teaching a provisional licence holder, the ''quality control'' is whether the student eventually ''passes the test?'' If considering 'teaching to drive,' exactly what criteria does one apply in order to be able to say, that person can 'now drive?' Whose driving standards does one assess against? One's own standards? Or, those laid down by an authority? At what point do we consider someone can 'drive?' That is the problem most drivers who may feel they can teach someone else ''to drive'', come across, and blithely ignore. The problem is, there are so many licence holders out there who reckon, ''they can drive''....Many expound their opinions on here, as I've noticed. But the cynical side of me always looks askance at anyone who reckons they can 'drive', so don't need to learn anything more. Now I'm retired from all of Ashley's world, I can say 'boswellox!' When I come across the so-called 'experts'...When I still worked, I would keep my own council.

Best comment I've ever read in regards to driving. This is largely the same way I view driving and I often tell others and myself the same thing. My instructor told me years ago something to the effect of " we can't teach you to drive, we teach you how to pass the test". They instilled a mindset of continuous improvement and stressed that passing the test was only the beginning, not the end and that we never stop learning or improving. Far too many hold the view that they are " done" once they have passed the test and they don't improve much thereafter.

When I was training to be an instructor, it seemed that The Instructor College in Reading were teaching their trainee instrcutors to stand on the kerb to teach a left reverse. Saw it once in Bristol too, so might have been company policy. I've seen quite a few standing outside the car in car parks too. Called them all out. I actually think he wanted me to fail so that I would have to pay for more lessons and I nearly did. Three stalls in the first two manoeuvres.... On the third one I pulled the handbrake on, knocked the car out of gear and took three deep breaths while stationary in the middle of the road with other cars waiting for me to stop messing things up. I think that response might have saved me as it settled my nerves and luckily the instructor seemed prepared to give me that chance but I think he threw in a few curve balls on the way back to the centre to make sure my initial problems were just red light fever. So it's not just driving habits that instructors get wrong.

i've not been teaching for a year yet, and i've definitely made some mistakes, mainly not noticing what the student is planning to do until it's too late - kind of like the clip here where the learner car approaches from the right and just goes straight over the junction - although i've never let it get anywhere near that level. Some of clips are appalling though. I've seen an instructor near me park in cycle lane no more than 2 foot away from a pedestrian crossing outside a school. Clearly they were there to pick their child up, but couldn't be bothered to find a more suitable place to park. Funnily enough it was one of 2 driving schools in the area which promote how cheap and quick it is for them to teach instructors, a point you mentioned in this video. I see it all too often from these 2 particular driving schools and i've already had a number of students come to me partly trained who tell horror stories about what their previous instructors would do on lessons, and it's always from one of these 2 schools. I'm happy that my instructor training cost me 50% more than this school is advertising, and that it took me longer than a few weeks which is what they advertise. I got through my part 3 first time, i've got a decent pass rate for my first year and the feedback i've had from students is 99% positive. I'd much rather take that over having a few hundred pounds extra in my bank just because i skimped on the training and fluked my way through the part 3. On another note, would you be at all interested in collecting clips like this from all over the country? Or is it just your local area you want to cover? I'd happily save some footage of poor instructor driving and send it your way if it's going to help.

I should have realised immediately that I was being taken for a ride (excuse the pun) when, as part of my beginners pack, I was given an out of date edition of the Highway Code. The “training” I was given was perfunctory to say the least. I had been fortunate enough to have worked for a company who took driver training seriously and had had defensive driving instruction and annual testing as an employee. I easily passed the theory and practical tests and applied for a pink badge to gain experience with actual pupils in the car. This meant I was earning money for the driving school who were supposed to be training me but left me completely unprepared for the final test which I failed woefully. Once cycling to work in Cambridge on Huntingdon Road I moved out of the cycling lane as it would have been dangerous at 25mph due to the terrible road conditions. The car behind sounded their horn. I looked round to see a driving school car. The instructor was reaching over the pupil to use the horn.

My instructor was on his phone for like 10-30% of every lesson I went on... Felt very uneasy when arriving at a junction knowing he was not gonna stop me if I pulled out on someone. Looking back, I definitely should have reported him, but I think it's too late now.

My older daughter, in a school car, was asked to drive systematically 5-10 km/h above the town speed limit to avoid delaying other road users. We complained as our car is not insured for that.

It's disgusting that they were told this, if only 1 in 4 drivers stick to the speed limit this self regulates and increases safety. For me that should see the instructor stripped of their status to teach others, utterly sickening

Wow. My driving instructor used to take me to roads that changed speed limits to make sure speed was adjusted at the right time. he also used to pick routes where a sign would instruct you to do something or had a restriction to see where you would go. (ie the "straight on" is a no entry or bus only) so you would need to do what the road says and not rely on him.

I used to work for a company and am very happy you investigate prior to assuming fault ... I was shouted at numerous times till I got a dash cam by Karen complaints that when investigated were unfounded the best example was entering Newton Abbot and having someone complain i "ran them off the road" the actual situation was this I had a large iveco twin axle tacho rated van with similar size trailer both fully laiden and was breaking from dual carriageway to stationary when I saw a car coming down the hard shoulder being aware if she completed her manuver I would NOT have distance to stop without hitting the very same car i moved out and blocked in plenty of time infuriating said moron and leading to a mile long beeping and swearing torrade and a formal complaint to my company while being subsequently screamed at in the office I did ask for guidance in future and a dash cam and requested the company put in writing their desire for me to knowingly allow a probably fatal set of circumstances to develop I didn't block for pride ... I'll get there whenever I blocked because her microdot would crush like a coke tin if she took the stopping distance we had as the traffic was slowing quickly and her driving was irratic better for everyone if she doesn't start a major crash my originally planned stopping distance had been pulled into twice already and there was no more room so please do pay attention and when in a car please don't try to cut lanes at the last moments coming to junctions as it errodes the safe distance the truck or bus had given you if you, just indicate... we are happy to let you in when traffic moves! best wishes PS: damn I'm old!!! Penn Inn has changed a LOT and it would be a LOT safer now to be doing that junction! stay blessed :)

One time i had a learner driver almost drive right into me as they were going into the junction too fast. I also made sure to stop right before i started crossing as it was a staggered junction so the learner and instructor could clearly see i was about to walk across the road and you can still see me as im half way across the road before you turn in and yet they still almost ran me over

Close to 50 years ago, I was on a fast-ish downhill A, road doing about 55 miles an hour passing a vehicle that suddenly decided to pull out to pass a vehicle in front of them. I had two choices, get punted off the road with a broadside swipe or pull out further to clear them. A keep left bollard was in front of me, I felt forced to pass on the wrong side as it offered the only possible escape route. The image, perhaps not all the details, are still with me now. It is a choice that has never been forced on me since. Was it lesson-learned then, or just bad luck? At least no one suffered any harm. I wonder if the driver doing perhaps < 35 mph also learned anything when they pulled out?

My driving instructor used to be on the phone at least once a lesson just pointing me in the directions he wanted me to go. I honestly didn't even know it was disallowed until I started watching this channel. Pretty scary in retrospect.

Just playing catch up with your latest videos Ash. Interestingly I had a very long chat with the folks running the IAM Roadsmart booth at the Himley Hall Mini show yesterday, Sunday. Just a few minutes into the chat, one of them commented about me "We are obviously preaching to the converted" after I started talking about IPSGA and "tires and tarmac" etc. One of these days I'll sign up for IAM Roadsmart in my area!

You didn't mention the car parked at the bus stop was also on the pavement. This is why I love your channel Ashley, there is no compromise when it comes to yourself or other driving instructors, you are always trying to raise standards, good on you for posting it. 👍😁😍

Well, technically not illegal (outside London) at the moment - although nobody's ever been able to explain to me how it can be legal to be parked on the footway when it's illegal to drive on it...and how can you be parked there without having first driven there LOL

As a HGV agency driver some of the companies have on board cameras and I've heard drivers warning other drivers about how and when to check their phones !!. Not just Instructors that need to be more professional.

I never believed poor driving instructors existed until I started lessons. My instructor told me to go down the M271 and she was CONVINCED that is wasn't a motorway. It really annoyed me that a qualified instructor didn't know what a motorway was. I decided just to practice with my parents as I already had my motorbike license so knew how the road works. Passed first time 😁

I had a driving school car rush past me at I'd guess ~85mph on the motorway and can only hope that it wasn't an instructor driving.

Well, I’ve gotta hand it to you Ashley, you are one of a kind because they clearly don’t make em like you anymore. You remind me of my instructor many a moons ago 🤭… his top priority was road safety and for the safety of others. As of these days it’s safe to say we all see bad examples from driving instructors all to often. Something has happen for these type of things to be happening regularly, have no idea what though. Maybe it’s the mentality of “drive like every other t@@t” and you’ll get by as a road user. Leading by example is the method… should be.

I can remember being outside of St Helens test centre and my instructor popped to the toilet inside leaving me in full control of the car. When he came back the doors wouldn’t open as they’d been locked. I remember a button looking very similar to the window switch. I’d only found out how to open it after removing the key from the ignition.

It’s great to see this Ashley. Like you, I too am passionate about road safety and I have been known to send in footage of police driving badly to the police. Who knows if it gets dealt with, but I do my bit. I also make mistakes myself from time to time as I’m human, but it’s a constant learning experience isn’t it? My passion is aimed at preventing the huge number of people being seriously injured or killed on our roads, and I have no reservations in calling out those who drive in such a way as to contribute to this unacceptable situation. Thank you for your informative videos, keep up the good work. 👍

There a driving tuition company or franchise I am aware called "Chilled" whose instructors may not be up to standard. Pretty sure that the examples of poor driving were from the instructors and not learners. I am unsure if Chilled are local to me in Norfolk or if they are national.
