There’s a couple ways to approach Corbett’s. This is considered the safest one. And if you’re scared (which honestly, when you see it, you should be at least a little rattled) this is a perfectly acceptable way to tackle it. That said, as you can see it’s very narrow and you have to make some pretty pinpoint turns. The other popular alternative is to just send it off the right. Which, is about a 30 foot drop. If you land in your backseat, you will most likely yard sale. Sending it takes a pretty strong iron will, but oddly enough it’s probably one of the safest routes IF you land it safely, because the rest of the slope isn’t too bad and the slope opens up considerably once you get through the initial chute All said, no one should make fun of this method until they peer over the ledge of it. There’s a reason why it has a reputation. It’s a very scary run.
@wm47503 жыл бұрын
Have you done it? It’s my dream to send it down Corbett’s some day
@emorydaniel90843 жыл бұрын
@@wm4750 I have! Thrice during a spring break with some college ski team buddies. Should be noted that two of my friends had FIS points in downhill and sent it: no fear. Wildly impressive to watch. Myself, I approached it the “easy” way first with a local coaching me how to tackle it. I was scared to death, but got a hair more comfortable that I didn’t have to sidle down the first half. I also had SL skies that were very narrow underfoot that I could make really quick turns. Race skies are not ideal for skiing out west in bowls (I’m an east coast racer), but it sure helped on chutes, glades, groomers, and mogul runs... All said, Corbett’s is a sweet run, and you don’t have to climb or traverse much to get to it 🙂 Ps. Cool thing is there’s a sense of “in it together”with people crowding at the top. if you’re respectful, wait your turn, and approach the run with a positive attitude, I found people were happy to joke around, give advice, and even pump you up to do it.

Plus he’s seen me go way bigger into corbits. Anyway, I stomped the maneuver flawlessly other than a slight backseat landing. Nicely controlled and safe. Skied technically beautifully when in the couloir. Not a half bad instruction if you ask me, although it might not be intended as such. As an instructor: first thing I teach is keep it safe. Side stepping and sliding are invaluable tools for that. Is that skiing? No, not really. But it gets you down safely with minimal risk. To each their own. (And ofcourse, if you are teaching Kings and Queens athletes, this is not what you would do.)

I spent most of the season in Jackson in 1997. What impresses me most now is how much bigger a drop this has become. I had heard that the season I was there was a bigger snow year, but cannot be sure. Anyway- the drop is at least double what it was. It was no big deal to huck it. On low snow days we would go from skiers left and plant a turn on the face to the right, (more like a wall plant) or just straight from the nose on powder days. But the drop was nowhere near the same.

Agreed - I doubt he had any intention of dropping in when heading to the 3rd step at 0:33...you can see he ends up with a sketchy grip on his right pole, and is about 2" away from putting his right ski on top of the pole's basket...which would have been disaster and could have ended up as instruction on how to get a snowmobile or helicopter ride off of the hill. So, yes, he did well to gather himself, recompose and then do it in a way he felt his moves were his moves, and not the mountain's.
