For the record, smashing instruments is seen as a disrespectful try-hard thing in the rock world as well. There may have been a time where people thought it was cool, but nowadays, destroying an instrument just makes you look like an asshole.

Ok, not only is deliberately destroying instruments a waste of money, art, and beauty; but how insulting to the people who spent their own, valuable time making these instruments! Not only that, but these people could be giving these instruments to people who will love and treasure them! Guys, please, even if you hate an instrument, please don’t destroy it. It deserves love, so give it to someone who will treasure it.

@@Sebastian-ce4ig You're right, I live in a 3rd world country, South East Asia. An average guitar player (non professional) could usually spare only 50$ for guitars, I'm lucky to be able to afford a 500$ guitar, and I'm not even professional, but then again 500$ is actually an affordable price for guitars in other parts of the world, and it is technically in the affordable line up of the brand. I'm definitely familiar with double standards. And obviously I wasn't referring to those Gibson guitars they destroyed, THAT is a waste for sure. But that cello, violin that those people destroyed would have very little impact. We don't know what was going on off camera as well.

There are so many underprivileged kids who would have appreciated those instruments that those people just destroyed. It's not just the insult to the workmanship, the fact that they destroyed something beautiful that brings meaning and joy to so many. What irks me most is that they could have donated those instruments, which are so expensive, to those who would take care of them and use them to make beautiful music. So senseless.

Amalia Khaydarova, I agree that you shouldn’t destroy your instrument like that for any reason, but it is certainly not the teachers job to yell at someone for playing out of tune. Its not like the cellist was trying to be spiteful or mean by playing out of tune, they are trying their best. That teacher should be held partially or even mostly accountable for this sadness and destruction. My teacher only yells at people if they are not trying or being disruptive to the other musicians. We should be encouraging artistic effort and passion, not squashing it by yelling at musicians for trying their best. I don’t think we need to be incriminating this cellist to the level stated, as two-setters we need to educate and encourage not punish. I agree that there is no place for instrument abuse and what the cellist did was completely sacreligious, but musician abuse needs to be taken seriously too.

True, very true. But the thing is he was very persistent with not trying to fix what he was doing wrong. He would almost never practice and was technically not trying to be rude or anything but he would just bring the orchestra down. He wouldn’t even try. The teacher once had a conference with his parents about how he was doing in orchestra but the parents didn’t do a thing to support their son. The boy also didn’t have the thought of practice makes you better so everyday he wouldn’t even try. My teacher may be a little bit strict but she had reasons. I hope. 😓 But, what you said was again, very true.

You should check out The Who appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Their rather eccentric drummer Keith Moon packed his bass drum full of explosives to go off at the end of the performance, unbeknownst to the shows producers. It resulted in shrapnel being lodged in Moons arm, the guitarist Pete Townsends hair catching alight and permanent hearing loss for the lead singer Roger Daltrey. Worst of all though, it caused their mild mannered bass guitarist virtuoso John Entwistle to step slightly to the side out of the way.

Funny story about the way I started playing guitar: I was 15 and at a friends house after school, hanging out in his garage and playing pool, listening to some music and blazing up when my friend pulled out an acoustic guitar he had. The back was peeling off a bit and the action was super high (the strings were really far off the fretboard, making it difficult to press them down on the frets) but other than that it was a perfectly good instrument. I didn't really know anything about guitars yet, but it seemed that it could be easily repaired/still be played in the condition it was in. For some reason my friend thought it would be funny and asked if I wanted to watch him smash the guitar outside in the street. I instantly felt it would be sacreligious to destroy a nice looking instrument, so I protested and asked him to give it to me instead of destroying it. He did and I took it home and there began my obsession with guitar for the past 12 years. I fell in love with the instrument right away. Also, I looked up that guitar model after I took it home and it turns out it was a pretty nice guitar, handmade in Canada. Wish I still had it as a keepsake, but at least I still have my love for guitar and music.

That Gibson video is painful. That was sacrilegious for the entire guitar community when it came out. They were closing down a factory and that was an epic fail of a guitar design from the now ousted CEO. (Not to insult the guy, he saved the company in the 80s, he just could not keep up with the times...). They put all their efforts into developing this model for a year and a half, and nobody bought it because it was expensive and over-engineered. Even so, it could have been donated to less fortunate musicians or schools. It was still a quality instrument despite it's flaws. I think it came down to it being cheaper to destroy them than to find a place for them. They failed to see how much of a PR disaster it would be; among a seemingly infinite string of PR disasters that plagued the company. Gibsons are heritage instruments (remember electric guitars are new instruments, Gibson's golden period 1956-1960 is truly like our Stradivari). I don't know anything about violin brands, but it's as if a truly historic maker decided to put automatic geared tuners, a synthetic fingerboard, and a complex active preamp in a violin, and charged a premium + price for it. Nobody buys it because their customers are traditionalists, so they throw hundreds of them in a woodchipper and an employee takes a video of it. Horrifying hahah

But destroying that many instruments just for views, when you have people wanting an instrument to learn how to play music? ESPECIALLY when the internet also have demand for videos of people donating things to people that want it but cannot afford? Sacrilegious is the only word to describe it! EXPLAINING GIBSONS GUITAR DESTRUCTION I hated their decision, but they defended this saying that all those GIbson Firebird X guitars destroyed came from a terrible defective batch. It was also apparent that the Firebird X model was selling terribly, and nobody would buy them, not even to modify them for the better. After this incident went viral, they pledged to donate millions worth of instruments to people who need it, and gave away an instrument a day for a thousand days. Still doesn't sit well with me though...that was a lot of wasted wood and steel. They do this a lot. More times off-camera. One statement released essentially says they were sorry to have let someone film it happening. ALSO yes some famous rock and metal bands thrash their instruments. Mostly because they can afford to lose it. They often gather the shards of the broken instruments and give them away to fans, or sell it in auctions to charity or collectors. But this is not as common practice as some may think. Usually rock and metal bands take intense care of their gear, as they have been customized, modified, or very distinct to make the sounds they want to achieve. It's a different conversation when you're well funded on a live tour however. But generally, this is insane. Do these people realize how many people out there would love to pick up instruments but can't afford any? It's baffling to me how this is even something people celebrate. Every instrument destroyed is an instrument that could have been loved by better people. Particularly those handmade by luthiers. Im so mad.

You do realize its a joke right? Noone is entitled to an instument. What they or anybody does with their personal property (barring illegal activities) is their own business. If anyone decides to destroy their own instruments then who cares, its litterally just another piece of property. There is no justification whatsoever for backlash or shame. Far crueller acts occur every single day and nobody cares.
@PhilipAlexanderHassialis
@PhilipAlexanderHassialis 4 жыл бұрын
Well, you should reaaaally ask Pete Townsend and sometimes Ritchie Blackmore about that, when their personal levels of intensity reached the point that shredding a poor guitar couldn't satisfy them and they simply smashed the damn thing. Sure, a violin shredder might not condone it but they would probably "get" it. It's very different when you are part of an ensemble that identifies itself as an ensemble, from a quartet to a philharmonic. It's QUITE different when you are "banding" together to play music. It's still you and your instrument along with other people and their respective instruments - and sometimes, the damn guitar really has it coming. P.S. Hendrix also enjoyed immensely destroying his pedals - up to a point he was losing money from the sold out gigs because he would eff up the equipment so much they would have to get new pedals for him almost every night. On the bright side, he simply burned the poor things, unlike The Who's drummer who of course had to rig his drumset with explosives which he promptly detonated during the final notes of the last song.

He raised some money, gave $20k dollars himself and donated it to a lot of kids so they can buy an instrument they couldn't afford otherwise. It appears as if the majority of the instruments destroyed in this video were already beyond worth repairing. I can't comment on the cello someone smashed but the one violin clip clearly had a violin with no bridge or strings. Those guitars were destroyed by Gibson because they lost a ton of money just producing them, those guitars are the Robot Gibsons and their design makes it impossible to tune them manually, they cost like 5000 each to make and were marketed for double that. Nobody bought them and the automated equipment in them made them unusable. That Sousaphone was broken fiberglass instrument that the guy clarified was beyond repair.

I will say, I have destroyed a guitar once. It was an acoustic that a friend in high school had, and it was badly damaged already (badly warped neck, cracks in the body, hole in the back). I did feel bad about it afterwards though even though the instrument was basically beyond repair.

Yes he burned one on stage, but he also would go to a shop, buy a guitar, on the way out see some young musician walking in and just give them the guitar.
