I did this with my 2005 escalade and it worked very well! I bought it at 300k miles so it's been dim ever since then but it just recently became very dark.

All the lights in the cluster are dim, I tried doing what you said but it didn't work, maybe I didn't do a good job soldering? The dimmer round switch turns it from dim to off. Hmmmm.
