A marginal VFR ceiling will often require an Instrument departure to get out of San Diego. Clearing mountains to the North and East while remaining VFR is generally not plausible when ceilings are below 3,500' or so... this scenario makes an Instrument rating worth its weight in gold... Note this video is heavily edited, intended to show you only the key elements of receiving and flying the first couple minutes of an Instrument clearance from Gillespie Field.

As a current IFR student, that helped in many ways. Just an overall well done lesson. Only wish it was longer. So, guess I'll watch it again. Thanks!

Brilliant video :) I loved the close up of the instruments as you were using them. Thanks for sharing.

I have watched your videos through my PPL training, and now working on IFR rating. They are great and I appreciate them. I hope to make it to CA to fly with you one day! :)

Single pilot IFR is certainly easier with an autopilot. When I was flying my Rockwell Commander 112TC (wing leveler only) 25 years ago, I always liked difficult IFR better when my IFR certified co-owner joined me and we divided defined duties.

I like it. I'm also with you on "with you". I might use that if I request a temporary freq change, when I return I'll say 'back with you' but otherwise I don't like it much.

great stuff and thanks. yes, my instructor also has me programmed to hate "with you" and "checking in" (he says that's what you do at a hotel - I agree they both sound unprofessional). The other forbidden phrase, however, is "looking for traffic" instead of "negative contact" .... seems like everyone says looking for traffic and I have to check myself when with my instructor !!!

+davet11 i will repeat what I heard a professional on my civilian-grade monitor say just a few days ago: «that is what you get paid the Big Bucks® for» which is thinking so that was an ATP Commercial ( i think ) As of 3:19 PM Thursday, March 10, 2016 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) I continue to find things from 1970 deep in the manual which support my decisions at the time and have asked ¼-million hour Fleet Captains questions of equipment with prompt responses which determine correctness of my observations yet the number-one risk is over-confidence

I do really enjoy watching your videos but you should let the cam-recording on going to know what is more over, and about the "with you" phrase you are in the right, cause they know you are with them and is overwhelming to hear that when flying, saludos amigo buen video.

Gary, Nice Video - What are you using to charge the iPad? Portable battery or cigarette lighter adapter and what model of either?Thanks!
@GarryWing

+LiveLaughFly We installed two 2.1A USB ports behind the iPad when I upgraded to the GTN-750. Prior to that I was using a USB cable plugged into the Cessna 12V power port (no cigarette lighter in this re-start airplanes...)

I'm also jumping on the no "is with you" bandwagon! Should be obvious that with your transmission/aircraft #, that the controller can easily deduce that you are "with him/her".

Is the CRAFT format standard procedure? Or did you come up with this? If so, is there a video or blog explaining it? Thanks
@GarryWing

+Tang Way Yeah, it's pretty standard. I made a video on _Copying IFR Clearances_ a while ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4LVqaeagKqCma8

dont you need a "cleared into Bravo" before entering the Miramar Bravo airspace? Class C only requires two way communication with the controller but I am pretty sure you need an actual "cleared into bravo" to enter. Am I wrong?
@GarryWing
@GarryWing 8 жыл бұрын
You do for VFR, but this was an IFR flight plan... you're 'automatically' cleared into Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Restricted, TFR's, etc. on an Instrument flight plan (although they may vector you around the latter, at their discretion).

Yes, I was thinking vfr flight following. Thanks for the clarification. On a separate note, I like your videos because you are local to me (I fly out of banning). I am about to earn my earn my CPL followed shortly by my MEL add on. Do you have any suggestions for local outfits that will hire a wet CPL MEL in the area other than CFI?

Whats the problem saying "with you" when talking to atc?
@GarryWing
@GarryWing 6 жыл бұрын
It's unnecessarily wordy. It's assumed you're "with them". In one-way simplex communication (only one person can hog the frequency at any given time), you want to work toward economy of words. Listen to SoCal at KSNA or KSAN on LiveATC.net to hear how important this is on a jammed frequency.
