In this module we use some fake data to illustrate the idea behind instrumental variables analysis. Using fake data lets us see the relationships between all the variables, including potential confounders, whereas we never observe potential confounders in real data.

I’m a little unclear as to why we don’t actually need to observe ability. Doesn’t ability need to be observed so we know whether ability correlated with distance to university? (i.e. We want to check on the exogeneity assumption?)
