in my country there are 2 types of insurance. One is literally mandatory called "civil responsibility" otherwise you will not even get your license plates and it's not that expensive, second is voluntary and it's much much more expensive and it depends on your age, motorcycle, where you live, if you have garage, if you have any traffic tickets etc

The cost of insurance repairs and payouts is at an all time high. The costs incurred by accidents with uninsured drivers is also at an all time high. Crash for cash is up. Pothole damage claims are huge... EVs are a big cause of the cost increases. Any damage to the vehicles battery housing is an instant write off. Parts prices shot up during Covid. The biggest increase is in profits and shareholder dividends. Every industry is at it, stripping us of income for the benefit of the shareholders.
@TriggerRidesEverything

Not true. Fact is the twist and go brigade, followed but riders in the 24-35 age bracket account for the highest number of accidents on two wheels. That's what pushes the premiums up.

This vid got me wanting to check how much itd be for me to insure a bike on my CBT. At 27, i was expecting it to be relatively low, but i was shocked. regardless of the bikes origin, it comes to around £300 (more in most cases). Genuinely shocking, but with a good year or two of learing the bigger bike license, hopefully NCD plus good road experience, itll go down. Still shocking though, god knows how expensive it wouldve been if i looked 10 years ago haha

Yes insurance companies are scum but it’s a easy out to simply label them as u fair and thieves. 1. Higher risks demographics pay more and f actors include age, experience, history, bike type, where and how it’s stored and used. It is reasonable to make higher risk customers pay more. What isn’t fair is current prices given the massive profit margins these companies have. 2. Let’s be honest. The riding community is full of dickheads and lately it has become popular on social media to post up stupidly dangerous riding or compilations thereof. Worse is that rather than other riders calling this out as ego driven, immature, disrespectful unskilled riding many applaud it…the same riders or their fans no doubt then whine about insurance costs. 3. A 15K bike is more likely to sustain serious damage or be a total right off than the same priced car in a “minor” accident. Thefts of bikes per unit, especially certain types/mantles/models is far greater than cars. Blame the thieves. It also Balme riders that can’t be assed using adequate preventative measures that make it far too easy. 4. My second eldest just got their first bike. I just registered it a my bike, insured it with me as the owner and put her down as a nominated rider. They then pay me the rego and insurance and if they bin it they pay the excess. When older I’ll transfer it across to them fully. But yeah, insurers are scum.

here is my thinking on this Insurance: I believe the government should offer young people annual insurance for a reasonable fee say £500. However there should be a stipulation that if a claim is made against you and upheld then that claim should be settled but then your cheap insurance policy should be cancelled and you should no longer be eligible for the government insurance scheme. I would also apply the same rules if you are convicted of a significant road traffic offence, speeding, jumping red lights etc.. maybe 6 points perhaps. A2 to A: My opinion on this is that A2 licence holders should be automatically upgraded to A without the need for a retest providing they have not been convicted of any significant road traffic offences whilst holding their A2 licence Just my thoughts/opinion on the matter :)

My daughter’s insurance on her new Kawasaki z125 was £800 for the year full comp. She is 22 and had full car license for 5 years with full no claims. She plans to keep the 125 for two years then do her direct access. I completely agree with you the license should automatically upgrade after 2 years if you have an A2. I passed my test on my 125 and was restricted to 33bhp for two years and then was auto upgraded to full A license. I don’t know when you’re talking about how much you pay if it’s full comp or third party only. The only thing I can suggest to make insurance even slightly affordable for a 17/18 year old is to buy the cheapest reliable 125 available and insure it 3rd party only. Buy a really really good lock to avoid theft (lite lock) remember if accident is someone else’s fault it will be their insurance that pays so the third party part in that case is irrelevant. You will still build up no claims on third party insurance as long as you don’t need to claim. I get your anger, feel free to vent anytime 👍

To me it would make sense to pass A1 then be allowed to ride a A2 bike on L plates. Then pass A2 licence and be able to ride A bike on L plate. Cars should also have restricted engines. My first car was 2.8 V6 rich people can jump into 1000 bhp cars with only two simple tests. Cars are more dangerous to everyone else bar the occupants than bikes. getting run over by a bike would be less lethal than an SUV.

This may trigger some I do not meant it to be in support of the licence thing. But I do understand why they dont like people going straight from a 125 to say a R1 or BMW RR or even my slow H2sx se as a lot of young riders like to open the throttle ( I know I did ) and you find that a lot dont think about death in the same way as they are young and are going to life for ever or something like that ( I found a new prospective on life when I was 26 when my daughter was born, I wanted to make sure I was there for her ) Even as a biker I see riders on a 125 racing every were all in the wrong places pulling out on cars cutting them up etc. it makes it hard for the Gov that want to save the young lives and not stop the good riders like yourself. but I do agree that once you have 2 years riding and No claims then an auto licence upgrade it should be. let me take you back a lot of years to 1986 when a daft 19 your old passed his test been riding a 50cc for a year then a 100cc for 2years rode other bikes after the test to see what to have got himself a GPZ750 Turbo well this knob rode 140mph every place he could without a care in the world after a small crash ( a flat bed turned right as he was overtaking ) the insurance went up even higher which was £1000, ( that was a lot back then ) then got done for speeding of exes of 100mph in 1987 cote from the copper " I was doing 110mph and you was left me standing " even after court did stop him. 1988 got a GPZ1000 RX which wrapped it into a tractor doing the speed limit 60mph ( he had someone on the rear would let him go faster ) 3 months in traction 3 months in plaster 3 months learning to walk again. but the only thing that stopped him was when his friend died with the person on the rear going to fast around a corner and drifted on to on coming traffic. he was 21. the other 19. this knob then changed stopped riding for some years then slowly got back into it, first a Honda CB250 super dream lol blow that up. a Honda 650 night hawk in the attempt to ride but keep slow. then a ZZR1100 oh then to a dream bike of his ZX12R which he kept for 14 years, he had started to notice the speed and riding style was getting faster, so along with the fact his knees was killing him on the ZX12R got a slower bike a H2sx se. just to let you know were my comment is coming from. I wish you could put an old head on young shoulders but you cant so I see why they have made it very hard for young riders and I do feel for you

In New Zealand, there's the Basic handling skills test, a one or two hour thing to make sure you can work the bikes controls, do some slow speed manoeuvres etc, and once you'e passed that you can sit the theory test for a Learner license, which allows up to 660cc and 47hp , but you can't have a passenger of ride between 10pm and 5am , after 6 months you can sit the practical test for the Restricted license, which... well it's no Different really, the same restrictions apply. and then a year after that you can sit another practical test for the full License with no restrictions (there are age restrictions before you can sit a license too) and doing a Bronze, Silver or Gold "Ride for life" course (in this order) can halve the time you have to wait before you go for the next license. If I have to wait the full amount of time, it would be January before I can get my next license... But Nah I want it for Christmas time. So I'm going to do one or two of them before December starts! And on Insurance... Well I've had my full drivers license since before you were born, so while I'm not old, I'm no spring chicken either, Surprisingly, insurance for a 250cc Adventure bike as a new rider, is about twice what I pay for the car insurance with many years claim free. and the bike is insured for more than the car.

Please don’t hate me, I’m 54 and my insurance is £230/yr for my CBR1000RR. Ok post roast info, everyone should also be aware that you must not let motorcycle insurance lapse for more than 2 years or you’ll lose ALL no claims bonus. Some years ago I had a realisation that the people I was riding with encouraged me to be dangerously fast on the road. So I decided to ride only on track. I did so for 2 yrs then went back, boy was I shocked that I’d lost all my NCB and my insurance went from £320 for 2 bikes to £900 for 1.

Yea, I lost 20 years NCB by being off the road for over 3 years (family)... it was eye watering when I got back on and started again. The company I had previously been with for those 20 claim free years wouldn't touch me (cheers Carole).

Agree with everything you say! I'm getting old so it doesn't affect me, but it annoys the hell out of me in general, and specifically because it seems so unfair and is now a serious barrier to entry for people getting into biking, which has a negative effect for ALL of us!! It used to be that if you had an A2, after 2 years (I don't know if you had to be older than say 24 or not), it would just turn into an A licence. This is how a friend of mine progressed, she had a ZX250 for 2 years then just swapped it for a CBR600 (she was plenty older than 20something at the time, though! ;) :D ). This is how it used to be, and SHOULD be, IMO!

The other big factor is the actual bike statistics from what I can gather. If you buy a popular bike that means that's more people riding them and more people crashing them which is what the insurers also look at. I found this with my W800 as my first 'big' bike. Literally only one auto quote showed on a compare site for like 800 quid for the year. Rang up the insurer I was with on my last bike and they really seemed to struggle to figure what I was actually on about and I guess just had to use what they could find statistics wise and the quote for the year for them was like 375. This is coming from someone above the threshold for direct access to be clear as that age box will definately screw you over in a big way too but it was an eye opening experience getting a quote for the W800.

I would love for the A2 to go back to automatically derestricting, it was so much better as a system and I /just/ missed out on it when it changed and had to go the long way. Making people pay for the whole test twice, taking all that time out, is literally just a cash grab, and it wastes a bunch of examiner and instructor time which makes the queues longer. Two years, gain your experience, and then go for it was perfectly safe. I kinda agree about the CBTs needing the theory test though, but then at that point they'd probably just remove the CBTs altogether and just have the A1, and that's putting a cost barrier ahead of the youngest, poorest riders, so it's a tricky one to manage. The CBT does need to be safer, but it can't be at the expense of accessibility.
@TipToeBikers
@TipToeBikers 8 күн бұрын
You make a good point there about the theory, I just remember road markings & hazard perception being an issue for another rider on my CBT day who didn't have any prior road experience. It felt like it would be a lot for them to learn over the course of 8 hours

I agree insurance is too high for younger riders, that's the wasteful society we now live in, scratch a plastic and bike is written off. As a 58 year old riding since 1995 insurance is around 300/year for a new 900cc. The A2 should be auto upgrade if insurance has been valid for two years and no more than 3 points on driving licence, otherwise a new test should be taken to ensure safety on the road.

It's tinted to the legal limit for day time use, so whatever that percentage is 😅 maybe it's just placebo, but I find it's a bit darker than the standard black tinted visor. I don't like using the drop down one either as the bottom of it distorts some of the road for me. I tend to be quite sensitive to light so this mirrored one is amazing for me, but it does scratch easily and of course needs to be swapped for a clear one at night 😊

It's incredibly frustrating anyone who passed their driving test before 1990 (not sure of the actual year the test was introduced) can hop on a bike with no CBT or A licence, they just have a full licence, while we have had to fight, learn, gain experience, and spend sometimes thousands to pass a specific test for a bike, my mother who has hardly glanced at a motorcycle could hop on a H2 tomorrow. Compared to many older riders; we've had to go through an advanced riding course. Yet, because they're older; insurance premiums are lower. In this day and age it seems strange these insurance companies blatantly discriminate age and gender to make a profit, can we be sure they don't discriminate against sexuality and race too?

The UK has by far the worst route to a full motorcycle lisence. Its incredibly expensive before you even get to buying the bike. The CBT is trashed by people doing it on 50cc mopeds then jumping straight onto 125s so they'll add the theory too it next increasing the cost further

I'm in the US; Kentucky more specifically. Most specifically, I'm on my couch typing this. We don't have levels of motorcycle licenses. There is just one; the "M" on your driver's license. In my state, we can take a written test about the law as it pertains to motorcycles to get a learner's permit. With that you're not supposed to ride with a pillion or at night but nobody ever checks. You can keep renewing the permit if you want for as long as you want. There is no bike restriction for the permit or the actual "M" on your license. So, yeah, an H2 can be your first bike if you want. To get your license, you can take a safety class by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). It is three days, kind of. The first day is a Friday afternoon where you take a school room class and talk about laws and answer questions. The second day is start of the actual riding class. They put you on a smaller displacement bike (500cc cruiser like the HD Street 500). You learn in a parking lot for a day and a half. Then the second half of the third day (Sunday), you take a "skills" test. After passing, you get a paper that you take to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and they give you the "M" rating. That's it. You're done. As for insurance, I'm 51 and have had a GSXR 600 and currently ride a 2023 Indian Scout Bobber. The Bobber is about $450 (337 Pounds) a YEAR. The GSXR was about the same but I stopped riding that because I got old. Have fun and be safe. (sorry for the long post)

The insurance also depends on the style too for a Yamaha yzfr125 will be more than a pizza scooter bike. I’ve got my a2 atm on a KTM 390 insurance is 600 with 4 years no claims at 21. Looking at doing my A in a couple of months time for a 22yr old with 5yr no claims I got quoted £1500 on a Suzuki GSXS750 for 2k miles. I got suggested to take an advanced riders course so there’s a suggestion…. And to call MCN and Bennett’s directly. I do also have a car so it’s just a bullet I’m going to have to bite I think if I want both.
