Accidental deployment of tethered vests is low because there’s a measure of force required to deploy. But that leads to your other criticism that there are crash scenarios where it won’t deploy when you need it
@ApexRadius17 сағат бұрын
There are also scenarios where electronuc vests don't always deploy, like, funny enough, some lowsides. For example, I've seen several reports of Alpinestars TA vests not deploying during lowsides. A-stars has been updating its algorithm to address issues like that but they are not foolproof by any means. Electronic vests also seem to still be more likely to falsely deploy. Check the fine print on the e-vests. One major maker of the electronics for several brand-name vests seems to say that users should only expect the vest to deploy in ~75% of crashes. Not foolproof at all. The good news is that all airbag vests, no matter the type, are worth having if you can afford one. And both have trade-offs. E-vests should deploy faster but are subject to potentially more failure ponts--plus most are still not user serviceable and are expensive to maintain. Tethered vests won't deploy as quickly and, theoretically, in as many situations, but are arguably more reliable for the big crashes (if set up properly). And despite what YN claims, tethered vests are actually quite difficult to falsely deploy. He really hasn't done his homework here.
@Bordpie3 сағат бұрын
@@ApexRadius Without extra sensors on the bike, usually attached to the forks, most electronic vests won't deploy when in a stationary accident e.g. rear ending at a junction. The Helite tethered vests are also one of the cheapest to recharge with air, and can be reused immediately (although recommended that they are inspected after an accident) if you have the allen key and a spare compressed air canister which are like $35. I got the Helite Vented airbag jacket which can be used year round since it has a waterproof/windproof liner; £685/$939 to get two bits of kit in one. It does get a little warm around 30 Celcius but in the UK it generally doesn't get warmer than that often. Having my personal safety dependant on a subscription for the vest to function is a big disincentive for me, what is the long term support like and what if the manufacturer decides to change it's pricing. If they made some sort of hybrid system that was both physically tethered, and used some other way of determining the bikes speed, e.g. wheel sensor, for electronic deployment, which didn't require a subscription and was easy to service, I would be up for one.

Arai, Shoei, Icon are basically universal suggestions, but anything with ECE 22.06 cert should be a solid helmet for protecting your brains, you may want to look at reviews from a larger sell sale (Revzilla or something) - sometimes there's something stupid about a certain helmet that makes it a bad choice. These days gore-tex use exactly the same breathable water-proof tech as every other medium to high-end brand (ePE), the problem is that it's in the conscience that gore-tex is the best, so equipment makers pay the premium to get the label on a jacket - but 2 similar jackets by the same manufacturer, one using gore-tex and one using $other water-proof fabric, they will basically be as water-proof and breathable as each other, only one will have the premium gore-tex pricing.

Highly disagree on tethered airbags. Electronics are better, yes. But tethered airbags are much cheaper. There are electronic airbags at similar prices to tethered systems, but all of them come with some BS like proprietary cartridges or subscription services. Maybe it's old school of me, but I'm not paying a subscription for my gear. The airbag I can afford and rely on is the safest airbag.
@ApexRadius16 сағат бұрын
Electronic airbags are not clearly better. There are trade-offs for both types (cost being one). Despite the perception and intent, E-airbags also don't always deploy when they're supposed to, like, yes, sometimes during lowsides. They're arguably less reliable than tethered ones. Turns out that creating a totally reliable algorithm for street riding is more complicated than creating one for racing/track use. Either type of airbag is definitely worth having and will provide superior protection in many crashes, but neither is foolproof and it's not clear which is objectively better for a given street rider.
@challacustica904910 сағат бұрын
@@ApexRadius absolutely. A mechanical airbag is pretty much guarenteed to deploy if you're off the bike.

#2 if you ride a naked bike like me, it is important to have a helmet, that stays steady in the wind. Had my Shoei GTR 2 stolen, so I needed a new helmet. I tested around 6 helmets and there are still bad ones in the ~400€ range. Ended up buying a Scorpion Exo R1 in onyx black (forged carbon style).

Goretex is made of ePTFE which i believe they lost the patent for in the 90s maybe early 2000s. Tmits not proprietary and other companies are able to make the exact product. Goretex is a scam and you're being ripped off by them

Klim gear is worth every penny. They have jackets that are WAY under $1500. Like others have said, if you want to save even more buy clearance or display models. Klim's customer support is amazing. Lifetime warranty, basically if it CAN be repaired, they will repair it, if not they will work out a deal for a replacement. I've had a new pair of gloves sent as a replacement for something that couldn't be repaired, my wife had a 5 year old patch of velcro wear out that was replaced. I have a 6 year old jacket that has seen daily commuting in sun, rain and snow. Still keeps water out and isn't too hot in the humid southeast US summers.

You know Yammie is a clown when he shits on Ruroc for partnering with the best comm system company out there to produce the shockwave 😂. How do u shit on a company for improving? Take it from someone who has actually owned a Ruroc 1.0 and now has a 4.0 Track. The 1.0 was their first helmet so it was pretty trash ngl and i will admit that all day. 5 years later the 4.0 is one of the best helmets around the 600$ price range. They have improved MASSIVELY. Also, Yammies claim that aero doesnt matter is prob the dumbest comment ive ever heard 😅. Ive had helmets that blow my head around at 70mph with poor aero and helmets where my head was locked in at 160mph. The ruroc atlas track is one that ive only tested to 135mph but was most certainly locked in. AND that was on a naked bike… Sorry Yammie but this vid just seems a little winey and full of false information and bs opinions.

One disagreement. The Klim Hardanger One Piece Suit is a good deal. Its one-piece design is both safe and very comfortable for long tours. Its many zippered slits adjust it to a wide range of temperatures. It even has a long zippered slit that enables you to take it off without needing to climb out. Waterproof and super high quality. Great design. It lists for $1600, but I got mine at discount for less than $1300. Oh, Klim also provides insurance on it in case of crash. They send you a brand new one. Ask me how I know.

But I drive a truck with a HUD and I love it don't know if that sentiment transfers to the bike but I can't justify $500 to test it so bar mounted android auto with power to the fus panel it is $120 plus an hour for install cuz I am ocd and had to rerun the cable like 3 times

Classic Noob - criticizing the Klim jacket without even acknowledging that its the only CE AAA rated waterproof touring jacket on the market. Also as someone who's worn a Corsair X with and without the optional spoiler it does help with head stability. And the "previous version" of the Contour-X was the Quantic that was never sold in the US

Most this stuff is useless, or out of my price range. Ain't gonna lie, I like the rear-facing HUD though. No, it's not difficult to just look at the mirrors, but I could look back without ever actually taking my eyes completely off the road. That's pretty cool. Still out of my price range though. The rest of it I don't need. Google talks to me if I'm using maps. That's plenty enough.

10:00 well, where i live, if i can avoid to use a phone mount i will. Because: a) it could rain on your phone and cause problems b)your phone could fall from the mount (i've seen this happen in video) c)if you are in the city, [when stopped at the light] robbers might take the cellphone and run (ride?) away... and also there's the sun making it hard to see the screen, depending on the angle;

Disagree on the aero. Swapped my old HJC FS-11 for a Shoei NXR made all the difference in long-distance and high-speed (German highways...) trips. Shoulder view at 100mph is really no problem with a NXR. Wearing a FS-11, your head gets locked in a 90° angle at 100mph

Membrane clothing is NOT pointless. I have a cycling rain jacket that is totally waterproof and (almost) not sweaty at all, even in a downpour. It is LESS sweaty than non-waterproof wind jackets I have, so that's all I use now. Theoretically, YN should be right, but he isn't - and I'm puzzled by how it does this. I have an AlpineStars TechAir 5. I chose that over a tethered vest because I was sure I'm going to forget to hook it up a lot of times. Only, I managed to forget to turn the vest on as well a couple of times. The reviews in the shop where I bought it complain about accidental deployments A LOT. Each deployment costs you over 300€ and takes a couple of weeks to have AlpineStars repackage your vest. So I used to activate it only when I start riding, and as a consequence I forgot to a couple of times. It is also very hot and sweaty, so I used to open it when stopped, which is also a bad idea. I now activate it the moment I put it on, and deactivate only when I take it off. If it deploys, so be it, better than crash with it deactivated. Accidental deployments are not really a thing with tethered vests according to fortnine - the force required to pull the tether out is much higher than you walking away from the bike.

Regarding HUD’s. Blucap smart glasses for motorcycle and bicycle riders seems to be the first true good HUD. It doesn’t have the hype and is being developed by motorcycle enthusiasts instead of corpos. Would be awesome to see a review on that.

Good list. I disagree on the race helmets though. I ride with Shoei helmets and rode with RF1200 and 1400 models for a while. I recently started wearing X15’s and it’s more comfortable in certain ways compared to the RF models. It offers more ventilation and less wind buffeting for me. On sport bikes I feel as though I have better vision while tucked with the X15. That is huge for me. I feel as though my head stays warmer in the RF1400 however. On everything that isn’t a sport bike, the differences don’t matter as much to justify the cost. I still use both and think they’re both great but you get what you pay for IMO.

If you think Klim is over priced, check out Belstaff. In Klim's defence though over priced. It is good stuff. Belstaff can't even say that. They have a nice looking logo though. Speaking of over priced, for what you get. Exhaust. If you think you can feel 3hp. Your delusional. If the exhaust note, or look and 1lbs weight saving is worth that much money to you. Well good on ya then. It's your money burn it anyway you like.

The nice thing about Klim is North American sizing. Euro brands tend to run a bit small, even with glove sizes. For a good alternative to Klim, have a look at MSR gear. It's available at Rocky Mountain ATV. It's Klim quality at 1/2 - 2/3 the price.

I disagree on the aerodynamic helmet. I have a normal HJC and at over 75mph, my head is bouncing all over the place. At the same speed and bike wearing the EXO-R1 aerodynamic, my head stays straight and alot more comfortable.

As a 2 ruroc(3.0 and 4.0) owner I 100% agree with how garbage they are. I was purely sold out by influencers. The helmet doesn’t fit my head. Medium was too tight, the shell would literally touch my skull. Exchanged for Large which is way too big on my head. Liners and pads are garbagely thin. Extremely loud above 35 mph even with ear plugs wind noise would bother me. Ended up on my garage wall as souvenir. Bought the 4.0 because of everyones claims how good the upgrades are. Also because I found new one on marketplace for 200$ including shockwave. Built quality is even more garbage than the 3.0. I can see some of the glued stuff coming off. On the good side, pads are much better and it actually fits my head. Helmet is significantly quieter. Probably quietest helmet I have ever worn. But not sure how quiet it is at 70-160 mph. Even though the helmet is garbage, I fucking love how it looks on my bobber with my boblbee backpack. I only wear it on my Indian bobber which I ride once ore twice a month for a short ride or around town. The fastest I go on my bobber is around 70. I have a aprilia as well and I wear arai corsair for daily and scorpion r1 for track. Though, I love the look, I would suggest people to invest on different helmet. This helmet shouldn’t be your first helmet nor only helmet. For me, this helmet is solely for instagram photos or for a ride that doesn’t exceed 50mph. Also do not buy this helmet for full price. PS: the shockwave system that came with helmet is useless as fuck. It is significantly quieter than my cardo edge, no bass, no app, no group connection with other brands, and the buttons are impossible to use mid ride.

I have a Klim Carlsbad jacket, which us laminated Gore-Tex, and recently bought a pair of Alpinestars RT-8 GTX boots. I use them for commuting and work, and love them. Weather is unpredictable, most of the time it rains, some days don't. I would feel more discomfort carrying a whole set of rain gear all the time. I plan on buying a mesh jacket when summer hits, boots are great in hot and cold weather, wear them all day until I get home.
@cjdaking17 сағат бұрын
One thing you may not be aware of is that while Gore Tex may not have the same benefits on the motorbike as it does in ski jackets, what they do provide is testing and rating of the finished garment for waterproofness. You can easily make a jacket entirely with Gore Tex laminated fabric, but if it's constructed poorly - badly sealed seams, bad zipper placement, etc. - it won't keep you dry. I rode for 4 months in Klim Badlands pants and the Carlsbad jacket through jungle heat, torrential rain, mud, and even a little snow. All I ever had to do is open and close vents and zippers. Is it necessary for your commuter weekend spin? Debatable. For those of us who use it as intended, indispensable.
