Many decades ago a family from the old world decided to take a chance of a lifetime, they packed up all their belongings and made the retros journey from their home country Croatia Towards the new world. After some time they found their dream place to live, which ended up being in the far north of Canada, where they build themselves a lovely little house that they later converted into a cozy B&B that could host only a guest at a time. Their whole life they lived inside the house, and they even got 2 daughters who grew up there. After visiting their home country numerous times, the daughters both decided that they wanted to move back to their heritage, they left their lives behind in Canada, and both started new lives in Croatia. The parents still lived out their lives in Canada, but unfortunately got sick and both passed shortly after each other, the father passed away last in the year 2005. Ever since that day, nobody visited the house again, the daughters seemingly don’t have any interest in what is left behind inside.
For the first time in 2 decades, we will reopen its doors and give you a glimpse of the inside.

as a child of Croatian Immigrant parents who first came to the USA in the 70s, this house brings such familiarity, sadness, and warmth to my heart. The Croats who fled the homeland during that time for various reasons, mostly to escape communism for a bigger, better chance in life, lived with the same heart. They all left their Croatia, and brought it here with them. The flags, the music, the food, the pictures, its as if I am looking at my own house. Branko was a patriot, a Croat who loved his country, but also had love and respect for Canada, who gave him a opportunity to create a life. His wife was definitely of German background. The “carpet” on the toilet seat was usually sold in a set with a contoured rug to place on the floor around the toilet, a rectangle shaped one for in front of the sink/or tub and a cover for the toilet water tank and its lid. This was popular in the 50’s and 60’s. The swag lamps were common in the USA and still in use in some homes today. I think the wife was of German descent as Hildegard’s is a German name. My mother’s family came from Germany. When my mother and her family didn’t want we children to know what was being talked about they’d speak German😊. Čudno je da djeca nisu došla pokupiti barem osobne predmete i fotografije. Thanks for this…a Family who are long time close friends of mine moved to Toronto from Croatia, while keeping their home in Zaharia as a vacation property. Their home was part of the old city wall, and was shelled during the Serbs-Croatian War. So the photos of damaged houses may have been from that time. Older Canadian homes, like mine (built at the turn of the 20th Century), are well built and solid, made of brick and stone. Homes built after WWII were not as well made, in the 1940s and 50s, and were smaller. Many were torn down to build new style homes in the 1960s and 70s…these houses were not built nearly as well, and once abandoned they fall to ruin quickly. My home is still in very sturdy condition, and will be standing long after we are gone.🖤🇨🇦

11:40 Original bottle was 'travarica'- strong alchohol drink (rakija) made of diferent kinds of herb, after that was pobably some home made drink - also rakija or maybe pelinkovac (bitter liquer from herbs, simmilar to Jegermeister). 19:50 Trenk was a sort of brandy popular in Yugoslavia in 70-s and 80-s.

Hello, Lesley! That instrument you found in the upstairs office is called a gusle. My paternal Croatian grandfather made them. I grew up in Chicago where there is a large Croatian community. Loved this video! ❤️

I will never understand why grown children do not retrieve pictures from their dead parents homes. Those things can't be replaced. I also don't understand why they don't clean out the house and sell it when their parents die. Nice house. Seaglass green is the color in the upstairs bath. Zenith was a common brand of TV in the US. Too bad it's decaying, not long till it probably collapses. The Vicks thing is humidifier. The carpet on top of the toilet is common in the US. They may buy matching rugs for the bath.

Hildegard I think is an old german name, my aunt is also named by this...the carpet on the toilette we have also in germany since I can think. When you are going to buy a carpet for the floor there is always one for the toilette as well, as set...one for the floor, one for in front of the toilette and one for above...it is to make the toilette more "cosy" because we see the bathroom as important room as well. So we want to have this room also nice...the c in the name of the owner ich spoken as sch or ch not as c as I know...this was a nice house and I enjoyed watching the video, thanks for sharing Leslie

I am Dutch but born in Canada and those hanging lights that you keep wondering about were a popular thing back in the 70s and 80s in Canada. I seen them in lots of homes not much in the present day though. And they came in a lot of different styles like the ones you seen, and some with stain, glass covers and other kinds

Such beautiful light plates, fixtures, and cool books! Here in the states, a carpet top for the toilet would match the other floor carpets in the bathroom, its sold as a set to decorate your bathroom. Hi Leslie, the toilet seat cover and the matching rug around the base of the toilet usually helped when you got out of the shower or bath (if the room had one). besides having a bath mat, these were good to keep you from slipping on the floor with your wet feet. The toilet seat cover was good to sit on without getting a shot of cold on the tush when you sat down to dry yourself off. Amazing place. too bad the girls left everything behind. If they ended up having children, they wouldn't have anything to show (pictures) their kids, of their life growing up.

This house was amazing! Someone had excellent taste in decory! Just wanted to say that the plastic thing with Vicks on it is a vaporizer. It produces warm steam to open airways (like in the nose). Helps immensely when you are sick. The t.v., Zenith was a top brand of it's time, 50's to 80's. I live in Chicago and it's plant was just a few blocks away. Leslie if you find a place in all your travels that makes a Cuban coffee get over there fast! The machine goes from one end of the place to the other. Hands down the best coffee you've ever had! You gave me a couple of good laughs in this one, especially with the “carpet “ on top of the toilet. It was, but not so much anymore, for obvious reasons, used as decorating the bath. They used to come in sets, there would be 2 rugs, and the toilet lid cover, and there would be a cover for the top of the tank. Frosted glass is what was in the door & stained glass is the colored glass usually in small pieces that have lead holding it together in a picture of some sort. Leaded glass is clear small pieces of glass with lead holding them together.... 😎 Ok back to the video lol

So many charming touches from the beautiful couches, light switches, crystal chandeliers. The bathrooms were decorated so nicely. I noticed in the kitchen the glass in some of the cabinets and design was very nice. Thank you for sharing. The ceiling in one of the bedrooms, if you hadn't have told us that it was pockets , I would have thought by the look of it that it was an ornate, bottom of the ocean sculptures :)

I have to thank Danny for the lesson on stained vs tinted glass, I didn't know that. I have spice bottles like that. I bought the bottles in the store and then went to the grocery store where I bought spices that come in bags (it's cheaper this way) then filled the bottles with the spices. Zenith was a major electronics company in North America and it's now owned by LG Electronics. I think you might be right about the heritage because I believe Hildegard is a German name. The Vicks machine is a varporizer, it releases steam with Vicks mixed in to help clear stuffy noses and chest congestion. Danny's right the German flag is upside down. This was a great explore, thank you.

I love BROS OF DECAY. I can’t believe how many people abandon their homes. I don’t understand how the children or grandchildren do not step forward and claim the home or very least belongings…. In my opinion the wife was German. Hildegard is such a German name. Thus the German flags! That Vicks device is a Humidifier and could be used to help breath better when Vicks Vaporub was added to a small compartment in the top. And that device in the container in the top bedroom with the hose and brush is a hair dryer. A bonnet attaches to the hose and you then put the bonnet over the curlers in your hair. I LOVE all the crystal chandeliers and the details (Light switch covers, toilet roll holders, towel racks) to make the house so lovely. It is so sad to see it deteriorate, I wish one of their daughters would at least come and auction off the valuables and take the personal items home. Especially the wedding album.

The vicks thing is a vaporizer. You put some vicks in a spot on top and the steam from the vaporizer help with congestion. Usually used at night

The mother had ready good taste in decorating the house so beautifully. The wallpaper areas had lovely contrasts on the plain walls which makes it more interesting. Those light switches were really amazing, especially the ones that matched the wall rails. Really interesting. Thanks for another trip around the world that I wouldn’t be able to do any other way.

Ha, ha, ha: The 'carpet' on the toilet was something many people had in Germany. Me too. The advantag is, you can close the seat without making a noise. It was just a fashion thing.

The carpet you saw on the lid of the toilet is actually a thing people did in the usa too, it comes in a set with a piece that covers the lid and the top of the back of commode, then it has matching rugs that go on the floor in front of commode and shower so when u get out of shower your feet steps out on a rug ,also it comes with matching shower curtains

( from 6 months back, now February 12, 2023 ) It`s sad that between 2 daughters why they didn`t come back & at least take All the Pics!! They could of sold all the furniture, & paintings, chandeliers!! I loved all the chandeliers & crystal lamps & crystal pocket doors... yes pocket door slide into the walls to each side! In the pics you saw, the hanging lamps, Did Not have any table lamps underneath on a side table called End Tables! You say in Europe your coffee is very strong & have Espresso, but here they sell Espresso machines, & my husband has his own Espresso machine & yes loves strong coffee, but I have a regular coffee machine, because I like light coffee! But, I buy flavored coffee grounds, use flavored creamer & top off my coffee with whip cream! Water got on 1 picture album, that is why their was decay on it! Haha, Lesley you saw a calendar it was 1992, you said 1922! Wow the one cabinet in the kitchen, was open both sides..so if you were in the next room you could still get coffee cups!! When you were in Girl`s Pink bedroom, you said she had a nice Vanity, but No because vanities have a large mirror above, this was just a Dresser! Yes in 1970`s you could put phones in bathroom to call someone in the house, later they got Intercom System put in bathrooms...usually rich people did this! The one room that was a office probably was a bedroom! Wow, Lesley it was cold in that house I saw your breath when you talked! That phone you picked up that was clear & you saw everything threw it, my brother got one in 1980, he was a adult !! Ok, Lesley you found one daughter`s college certificate 1976, she graduated 18 but did 4 yrs college= age 22 so she was born 1954, this year 2023 she will be 69!! Vick`s Danny was right a little..he said Purifier, correct, but it was for cold`s & you put Vicks ointment in it & the Vapors went into the room, helping to breath if stuffed up nose & helped lungs! I had a similar machine for my children, they are now adults 1975-1980`s! Light covers for turning on lights or outlets, came in many different patterns & colors, they still sell them today! Attic : Yes this was converted into more bedrooms & the house I live in now has 2 bedrooms that has been converted, & All Ceilings Have Slanted Look, plus it will have hidden walls that open to use of the attic.., some have floors or walls, others don`t! Yes the Ronson Escort is a Hair Dryer...many women, girls put curlers in hair & sat at a chair & put this hair dryer cover on your head, 1960`s! Ok Lesley you stepped on the Scale & weighed 185 pounds or 83.9 kilograms/ which is Very Good!! The Carpet Cover on the Toilet Seat Lid & had a Matching Carpet in front of toilet, mostly for decoration, was from 1950`s-1960`s but still sell today!
