Your welcome Erik, sorry to see this a year later. I haven’t made a video in a long time but I’m looking to get back into KZbin and making videos . I’m glad this worked out for you.

Great video Dude. Done too many of these gasket jobs, most labor intensive. Generally not for the beginner, but I would and will recommend your video. The valve rocker tightening chapter isn’t really necessary, but great for teaching the fundamentals. It is a good idea to squirt a little oil onto each lifter before re-installing the push rods, it will help ensure the lifter pumps up when you start the engine.

Dude you literally just saved my ass. I have a 2001 Grand Prix 3.1L V6 and I got a tick, I've barely got any money to replace the pushrods and lifters, much less pay a mechanic to do it. You helped me learn how to properly dismantle the engine to that point, plus now I know how to make a couple other quick fixes along the way!

Best video I have found on KZbin for this procedure! I am in the middle of replacing my intake manifold on my 98 Malibu for the 2nd time since buying it. I had a friend help me many years ago, but the only gaskets we could get that day were from the dealer. I'm putting in the Felpro gaskets this time and expect this to be the last time I ever have to do this. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

thks, for doing a detailed video, on the 3100, I've had this car in my garage for 10 yrs,& because of this video , I'll know what I'm doing and I'll get my garage space back and a working car. I've taken the engine and transaxle out, as the engine burned oil, either from the 150 to 200 thousand miles , not sure because at about after (5 yrs of use), its a 1995 purchased with 12,000 miles on it for 13,500 several people we went to said it needed a new engine, ( it was leaking oil all over the fire wall side. Now I know it was the intake manifold gasket ,& the mechanics& garages we went to jst said it needed an engine because a lot of mechanics will swith a used engine from a junkyard rather than tackle the intaake manifold gasket replacement job. so now we haave in our 95 grand prix 4 door, a chevy lumina engine 3100. ( so all those right on time oil changes were for nothing> but now the body odometer is on 199219. Like I said earlier, after paying 900 to get the replacement engine, head gaskets replaced, & the mechanic putting on a faulty water pump that might of overheated it after the head gaskets and intake gaskets were changed , any way some how it started using a quart of oil a week . and the seal went out of the automatic transmission, thats why I took out the motor and tranny, cradle down and out. used the cherry picker to lift off the dog bones ( with a chain tied between the two), lifted the body high enough the first time to get the motor slid out with a cart under it . But on the 95 grand prix 2 door i PURCHASED FOR 500 for the engine and tranny thats got 165 thousand miles on it with a rusted out frame and other aras. Wisconsin road salt. on that on yesterday, NOV.2021, I picked up the body not as high to slide out the engine because I removed 1 strut that dangled in the way( only 3 bolts. I can put the strut back on weld a bar between the tow , where the lower ball joints used to attatch to the cradle thats not thre any more so it will roll on the trailer better & easier to get it to the scrap yard. . noticed the motor mounts aren't doing much as I pushed it on a cart into the garage, for the head gasket replacement and of coarse the intake manifold gaskets there not leaking but it much easier to do this out side of the car, while I'm doing the swap . I should even put in the tranny seal. anyway again, thanks for making a detailed video on the exact car the 1995 --3100 6cyl. pontiac grand prix.

Hey man, 905 right on. I'm about an hour north west around the Guelph area. Huge props on your video, big help and put together very well. Thank you very much, I used this video to re-build the top end on my 3100 in my Buick Century. The wiring was a little differently laid out but the build was right on. You mentioned you were interested in a new coolant/washer reservoir. I was able to find and pull one from a "you pull scrap yard". In my case an Oldsmobile did the trick. Thanks again and keep up the great work

I have the 3100 engine in my olds.. the mechanic argued with me that only the head gasket can cause a coolant leak into the oil... I told him the intake manifold cojld as well... now I aee by your video I was correct.

The 3100 is a very good engine to rebuild..i did the lower manifold gasket at 200,000 wasn't leaking just routine maintenance..i had this lumina for 20 years..if you changed the radiator,water pump.heater core,starter,bearings,brake shoes & pads & all have lifetime warranty ..most work I done in the last 10 years was free..now I will tell you about the thermostat mistakes..most will put gasket sealer & tighten way to hard ..clean them threads put something on them to keep from sticking down ..that thermostat seals with a rubber seal that don't take much torque..if you have to change a thermostat dont apply alot of force to break the thermostat bolt..heat it up ..that housing is connected to the low torque 10 mm bolts on the manifold..only takes a small crack in the seal to start leaking..i seen many using a special tool with a breaker bar ..i be willing to bet most failures happen after a thermostat change..nice job on the video

Great job. You have the best comprehensive 3100 top end teardown video. I did this job on my own the first time. Just a hanes manual. It is no small task. 15 hiurs total. I super cleaned each part and did an entire rebuild kit of engine gaskets while i was in there. Might as well if you are diving in this far. Do the block water tubes while you are in there and a thermostat to. They are cheap.

Thanks for your Video it was very Informative and well done I'm just now in the process of replacing my Brothers Intake Manifold Gasket, his car is a 2000 Buick Century with a 3.1, it had a little white milky Oil/Antifreeze mixture on the PVC and down inside the Valve Cover and during inspection I could see where it was actually leaking between the Gasket his doesn't have a lot of Mixture of Oil/Antifreeze inside the Valve Cover yet,but would have probably progressive got worse for sure,and if this problem is not fixed soon it will actually ruin the Rods&Mains and Cam Bearings and cause it to start loosing Oil pressure due to ware on the Bearings from the Mixture and can also cause it to start Knocking due to lack of lubrication as well, so one should fix this problem as soon as possible and Thanks again for you Video

TIP: for those of you newbies out there you can leave a lot of hoses in their place just disconnect them from the upper intake and lower intake and put them to the side, save you a lot of time Don't worry about where they go untill you are installing everything back.. the routing of the houses will tell you where they go in the intake its self explanatory oh and also you can rent a tool to remove the push rods without un tightening the rocket arm bolts BTW when you put the sealant 1:06:00 did you immediately torque the bolts on the lower intake manifold or did you wait 1 hour like it says in the sealant directions?
@paulroybal3430
@paulroybal3430 6 жыл бұрын
I did not read the little tube instructions...Did they say to wait one hour?...Oh well, I will find out if it worked. I am finishing up my project little by little. I remember he said the clock it ticking so I figured that I should put the sealant down and then place the manifold imediately.

very good video and I don't think that it was to long, this is a job that is going to take some time to complete. Good angle shots with the camera. Maybe one suggestion that I would make, is to include the re-instillation, re-filling and bleeding the power steering pump. You want to make sure that you get all the air out of those lines as well as the cooling system. Good job

Also a little anti-seize on the EGR bolt threads is a good idea, they can become quite rusty over time. Rusty bolts in aluminum have a tendency to break (not good). To all the first timers, put that cell phone camera to use as you disassemble, it will make re-assembly that much easier. If you have the famous cracked rear exhaust manifold that many pre-'97 W-body 3100's have, this is a good time to attack that bastard.

Thank you for this video This is one of main videos that helped me fix my sisters Buick 1998. took me 4 days. Its hard to remember how all the bolts go back. After heaving the coolant flushed by jiffy lube 109.09$ they did it twice the first time i seen oil chunks going through the tube the second none good way to test if you fixed it because oil will be still end up in the coolant fluid, if there is still a leek.. So its good to have them test the fluid. the total cost was 40 hours and approx 300.00$ 1500$ less then having a auto shop do it. (NOTE: I might of said head gasket.....) This would be almost twice the work thank god its not a common issue. Like On your video i wish i would of labeled stuff......... Would of saved me 20 hours!! Thanks again if it was not for this and 2 others I would of never saved my sisters car.

Thanks a lot for the video. I Have a question though. I have a 1995 Olds. Cutlass Supreme SL. My mechanic said that the reason I am losing 2 and a half quarts of oil every 100 miles is my head gaskets are leaking. I have no problems with overheating or milky oil or oil in overflow tank. I have also been told it is a bad limg. I am leaking oil from the top around the intake and heads where they connect to the block.I have no idea what to do with it. Any advice

My 94 grand am has this same exact engine. But ive been having intermittent stalling problems for a few months. Running out of ideas as to what it could be but HEad gaskets were replaced 3 years ago, intake manifold gasket late 2012, basic tune ups here and there in late 2012 and early 2013, inc. map sensor replacement. STILL stalls intermittently. Sometimes it drives like a champ, then sometimes it barely wants to run at all.

GM motor is notorious for head, intake and other gasket failures, oh and the crankcase seal also failed big time. I hear the Dex-cool is to blame for deteriorating of the gaskets so I'll be switching to green. Well folks, I wanted to be a Beer-Drinkin, Car-Fixin REAL Man... so I decided to repair it myself (after years of intimidation/hesitation/preparation). This entire gasket replacement has taken me on a journey, probably similar to a heart surgery, and I am still not finished putting it all back together! Depends on where you live. and the person doing it. I am in long island NY, a expensive place to live. and for this job I would charge about $360 for labor. a shop you have to remember half the engine is coming out. shops have overhead etc. I do not.. expect to pay anywhere between 400 and 900 dollars for this job. ive seen shops price this job out at about $1000 dollars. Joel, thats a very common problem for those engines. Especially the early 90's 2.8's and 3.1's. This is so Common that if you go to the auto parts store they have a section called a Help section. and the help section is for problem parts commenly found on cars of the 80's 90's and even today.. Take a picture of the part and take it to the auto parts store.. its easy to replace. good luck

John, Sounds like the bead of Silicon means its had previous work done to the engine.. Is it running hot?. Doing the cylinder head gaskets are involved. you would need to send the heads out to a machine shop to have them checked for warps and cracks. If the engine oil isnt leaking from anywhere it could mean its burning oil bad. bad valve stem seals or the engine is just really tired.Do a compression check on the engine. chances are the engine could be tired. and worn out. hows the power on it?

Great video, very well done. Im doing a similar job on my 97 grand am engine. Ive replaced gasket but im confused about setting the valves prior to torquing it all down. Can you explain how to do this, and how critical is it??

Ok, so read through some of the comments, and figured out that this isn't a necessary step. but another question is how did you turn over the engine? Do you just stick a socket in the center of the pully and act as im tighting the pully, or is there a special tool required?

Question: I have a 02 Buick, with the same 3100 SFI engine, and on torquing the rocker arms, I have seen on other videos, and even the service manual doesn't state that I have to turn the engine/rocker arms to TDC. But in the video, you did...Is this just general practice, or is it required for the 3100? the reason that I ask, is I dont have a tool, or even know how to move the engine. And a friend also told me not to touch anything, and just torque as it is. Is it alright if i just torque it?

Okay, thank you for the response. I'm diving into my problem here and have the throttle body off. I can see the leak spot, but the leak is brown like chocolate milk and i have the same color stuff on my radiator cap and as far as I can tell inside the radiator. Do I need to do the LIM gasket then?

First I have to say great video, very well done. I have a 02 Grand Prix with an external head gasket leak I am going to tackle soon, I was wondering how many more steps is there to get them off after you get the intake out. I know I have to get all the head bolts out and I assume I have to take the water pump out too. One other question, is there any specific procedure when filling the power steering pump with fluid? Thanks again excellent video.

Great video, very very extremely helpful! We're halfway done, and have a question: since we didn't move the cam and these are hydraulic lifters, do they actually need to be adjusted?

Hey man great job explaining and breaking down the job into chapters. Out of curiosity is there a reason you didn't decide to do the Head Gasket at the same time? I have heard it i best to do both at the same time??

John, I had this Car. they are very good Cars. I had the 1993 model. you have the 3100V6. unfortunatly these engines intake manifold gaskets are no good since day one. my 93 didnt have this problem because 1993 for that car was the last year of the 3.1L and the revised "3100" was put into it. how may miles do you have?. and I think your mechanic ment to say you need lower and upper intake manifold gaskets..Let me know the miles it has and what major work or minor work has been done to the engine

glad to hear. Just to let you know it took me 5 days to do this..Not because I didnt know what I was doing, but when you are working on a car, and shooting video at the same time it slows everything down. this was a Day job for a ASE certified mechanic.. Good luck.. What did you get stuck on??

Tell me about it. i did the inner and outter tie rod ends last night under my carport. I hate the rain. But, since my lease was up. im workin outside till i get another garage. people have videos out there and you see them actually torquing the rockers down?..I was taught NEVER to do that on these engine.

This Video looks great! I may be using it soon. However I have a Question. I'm loosing coolant somewhere. No visible puddle or drips. If it made its way to the case its not showing on the stick. Exhaust smells a little sweet, but no moisture coming out. Coolant has "gunk" around the Radiator Neck and on the Cap. Is it possible the Cap is shot and its evaporating? Just wishing it would be this easy of a fix, but you know how cars are. Thanks.

We have it all together and actually running! BUT it sounds like one or more of the lifters is banging...not always, irregular. pretty sure we got all the pushrods correct. any ideas for troubleshooting?
@905speedgta
@905speedgta 11 жыл бұрын
right, Non adjustable Valve system. just tighten and go. I like to spin the motor so when the cylinder that im tightening the valves on is at top dead center with the cam lobe flat. its the way I was taught. Ive seen people have to tighten the valves over and over again cause something wasnt really tightened, valve clacking do do not tightening correctly etc. id rather TDC the cyl tighten and torque and be done, and never have to do it again.. my engine is quieter then most 3100 after this
@905speedgta
@905speedgta 11 жыл бұрын
John, its very critical. You have to do them right or the engine wont run right. Set the valves in the firing order. Turn the engine crank to cylinder #1 Top dead Center. Tighten Both Intake and exhaust valves for that cylinder and torque to specs its in my video. Then spin the engine to the next cylinder in the firing order which is Cyl # 3 and do the same thing. remember this is a non adjustable valve system so its simple. theres no spinning the pushrod while tightening. watch video carfully.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am Se, with a 3.4L V6 - Aside from a few things in different places, like the orientation of the battery & the air intake filter box, are there really that many differences? I didn't notice too many. One thing I will point out, is that these vehicles are known to have faulty fuel pressure regulators.

They are. The 3800's are much easyer to work on, especially when doing a intake gasket set. The 3100s in the W body cars give alot of room to work in. Most GM cars with the 3000 series are not too bad to work with.

Thanks, I needed that! I think 7.4 ft/lbs + 30 degrees should be 45 foot pounds to eliminate the guess work in finding 30 degrees. Very tricky re-assembly, I didn't label every nut/bolt and bracket well enough and the ones I did still prompted confusion because you gotta put some things on halfway to enable other parts to fit. Otherwise, I did it in my garage in a day and a half.

When you pull out the distributor cap 50:00 what happens if you don't put it in exactly where the gear was?
@905speedgta
@905speedgta 10 жыл бұрын
sneakysnakepie1 It wont go in. Theres only one way you can put it in. and when you know you got it right is when you sink it back down and it goes all the way. This isnt a distributor. I forgot the name for this, but its there because of the design change when GM made these Distributorless Ignition Engines. Sorry for the Delay, i justsaw this now

At first I was like, "This video is going to be way too long." I seriously watched the whole thing and it wasn't even too long. The 3100 engine, I love it and hate it. The best part is when he's all happy at the end driving it around singing Third Eye Blind!

James McNeil Hey, jobs like this you need to make a long video. Thats why I break them up into chapters so the people who need to do it from start to finish and the people who need just a reference can use this video. a job like this you have to cover everything. even the little stuff. theres been soo many times ive seen other people post videos where you will see them taking the fuel rail off and in the next transition the car is running and they are saying its all fixed. Im known for my long videos. and I know that youtube recommends short to the point videos, But really that whole video is to the point, theres just alot of steps lol. and like I said, i want to be able to help someone thats never done a job like that before but needs the confidence to do it for whatever reason. most people that suscribe to my channel and ask me questions are people who are do it yourselfers or people that cant afford the prices of a mechainc. thanks for the comment though, i always like to hear input from youtubers and my subscribers. Check out my Channel and subscribe to us for new videos. and I love third eye blind, thats what I grew up to lol. have a good day and again thanks for the comment.

At 42:27 you show a hose. My 1994 3.1SFI Ciera has this part too, and I have a coolant leak coming from this hose/bolt/o-ring. Please, can you tell me if this is a common leak spot and if this can be fixed. Or should I be looking forward to heavier engine repairs? Only 120,000 miles so I hope I'm not quite to the failure point of those plastic gaskets. When I say leak, I should probably specify more like a steady pour. I can loose 1/2 gal of coolant in 2-3 minutes flat.

my question is how do you know the head gasket isn't bad too? I always thought the milk shake oil was the indicator I'm currently working on the same engine but the oil wasn't milk shake yet I could very easily see air escaping from the intake very near the thermostat once the engine got warm

I'm in the middle of this repair, due to coolant mixing with engine oil. What would you recommend to clean all the old, brown sludge like oil in the engine after finishing the repairs..? I am adding an additive to the coolant for a coolant flush....but do they make a product that could be added to the oil to help clean the engine..?
