Your version of price to performance graph is not good for estimating. It would be much better if you would just do a linear graph like for all other tests where the length of the lines would be calculated with performance/price and than you'll have a graph that will be very accurate and easy to read.

Ri5ux They get really hot, and yes, the price is horrendous; Threadripper CPUs will most likely be the better choice, because for the 1000$ you pay for the i9 10-core CPU, you will get a 16-core CPU by AMD, if the rumors are true. Anyways, you should wait until you have a choice, and then decide which one is better.

They can't. That's why they are now wildly trying to find out what sort of voltages they can actually use with those chips before it turns into a Molten Slag Inside(tm). That 10-core is already pushing the envelope pretty hard as it is.
@Pekiii927 жыл бұрын
7900x stock power consumption does look bad at first glance, but if you compare it to 1800x. 7900x gets 32% performance increase for 32% more power consumption (compared to 1800x on cinebench r15). Also if you want to get a bit closer to stock 7900x results (still not anywhere near), you will have to overclock, increasing 1800x power consumption way more than its performance gains. 7900x overclocked temps and power consumption seem ridiculous tho. I know that 1800x still is better value, but 7900x is meant for very niche market, and you will have to pay premium for the best.

yep it's 16x for GPU, 4x for Nvme drive and 4x for chipset, so it's 20 usable. The Zeppelin die actually has 32 PCIe lanes but the AM4 pinout only lets it use the 24x. The die has a lot more lanes used for linking Infinity Fabric to other dies in Threadripper and Epyc packages. That's why Threadripper (2x Zeppelin dies) has 64 usable lanes and Epyc (4x Zeppelin dies) has 128 lanes.

Dean Calaway Very interesting. But intel marketing seems to indicate that they intend to sell this to the HEDT market that's populated by only prosumers - not professionals exclusively. I don't know if professionals should only actually consider Xeons and leave the i7/i9 series to people who certainly indeed to overclock - where thermals don't hinder.
@SilverforceX7 жыл бұрын
Dean, you need to quit the apologist mode. All of your points are invalidated by the fact that Intel's current HEDT platform, X99, with Broadwell E, does not have this temperature being out of control. It also doesn't have cheap TIM. Your excuses do not fly unless you are insinuating somehow that Broadwell-E isn't meant to be a workhorse that last 5 to 10 years...
@SilverforceX7 жыл бұрын
And if you want to drive the point that these HEDT CPUs are company workhorses, you ought to know these workstations aren't packing 240mm water coolers that reviewers love to use to showcase Intel's X299 in it's best light. If a super water cooler gets 80C on stock clocks, you can imagine how it would fare with an air cooler or a 120mm rad cooler.. between you and me, I don't think such high temps are good for longevity. It's plain disgusting that Intel has chosen to save a buck for a premium platform that's being sold at very high prices. Worse would be apologists who defend this action.
@SilverforceX7 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing Dean, we don't have to be CEO of companies to see what's plain obvious. Bad CEOs get promoted and fired all the time in the business world. I wouldn't be surprise if Krzanich is on the chopping block soon. But you keep on defending Intel if it makes you happy.

It's a beast and the right move IFF gaming is your priority here but since Video editing and compositing from Adobe (leaders) derive their biggest benefit from high core speeds and NOT high core counts, then unfortunately Intel chips are the way to go. They have the older peeps who have the big bucks to spend over a barrel . We have to go with a 7800x or 7820x to get the best balance between 75% regular After effects and 25% 3D rendering ~ Maxxon C4D etc.. We also need support for 128 gb of ram for larger projects. I've watched all the thread ripper video and reviews and do you guys think that the 1920x can be overclocked and the co-responding Motherboards can be had cheaper than an intel system. Also How about when AMD improves the " clock speeeeds" will the motherboards be future proof for at least one upgrade or will I / we be in the same boat as procuring an Intel system ? Because it is. They've got nothing. Though the Threadripper is not the major threat to Intel. EPYC is. And it is even more disruptive than Ryzen. Ryzen was created out of it. It was always about their server chip as it was aimed for the biggest market with the highest margins, Intel's fortress. Though it will take a couple of years for AMD to conquer it(as we know the server market is quite conservative), it is now inevitable.

The way Ryzen does it because Ryzen is sort of made of CCX's which are essentially 4c modules interconnected by the infinity fabric. Basically means they can produce much smaller dies and just stitch them together with the infinity fabric to make for example the 16core 32 thread threadripper cpu while still retaining around 100% efficiency over IF. Because larger dies are much more expensive to manufacture due to defects AMD should be able to price any Ryzen cpu very competitively.
@artkrub77 жыл бұрын
AMD Infinity Fabric make them be able to make a high core count CPU for cheaper price. Because they just make tons of 4 cores CPU and tie them together while Intel has to make a whole 16 cores CPU in one shot and hope that all of them works.
@rozenkreuzh7 жыл бұрын
Because it's far cheaper and easier to make 4-core CPU and then connect couple of 'em into one die, rather than making 10-18 cores altogether on same die. All thanks to their cheap yet excellent Infinity Fabric.

Seriously though, at 300 dollars, the 1700 (or 350 for the 1700x, as no one should buy the 1800x) the ryzen processors would look even better. Also look at that power efficency of the 1800x, where the 8 core ryzen part consumed the same power (practically identical) to the 6 core skylake x part. I am actually afraid to see threadripper as I don't want to know what that many ryzen cores with quad channel ram is capable of.

Basically, don't buy one.. wait until Threadripper for either price drops or a better performing/priced Threadripper CPU. Also, the motherboards are really expensive currently which means that if you go with the new CPUs, you could be missing out on performance by getting a better GPU with the money.

I think there may be 2 mistakes: At 5:09 he says, ""Anyway, running the memory at DDR4-3200 resulted in a massive bandwidth of 63 GB per second, for the Core-i9-7900X." This seems to be true because this CPU got 63.4 memory bandwidth throughput in the Sandra 2016 test. 1 - But at 5:17 he states, "The 6-core 7900X also achieved roughly 60 GB of throughput as well." I think he meant to say the "6-core 7800X", because it's the SIX core Intel CPU rated at 59.6 GB per second (about 60 GB), and the 7900X has 10 cores and, again, is rated at 63.4 GB per second. 2 - Then at 5:30 he says, "AMD's Ryzen 7 series, impressed in the Cinebench R15 multi-threaded test, and as you can see, the 8 core CPU PUTS DOWN the 6950X with relative ease." The only AMD 7 series in the graph, which is an 8 core CPU, is the Ryzen 7-1800X and it has a Cinebench multi-thread score of 1671, which is LOWER than the Intel Core i7-6950X, as it has a HIGHER multi-thread Cinebench score of 1775 (and the graph indicates higher is better). Or am I confused by the sometimes unintuitive CPU model numbers? (Come on Intel and AMD - choose a simple, logical, naming scheme that easily identifies and rates each subsequent model.)

doesn't ryzen have 20 PCI-E lanes? (and 4 for the Chipset).

I hit 4.8ghz at 1.25v with all the stuff Der8auer suggested changing in BIOS and it was stable. Max temps with a H115i were 98 but I only used an AVX offset of 3. Average was around 78C. Used AIDA64. I am a freelance 3D modeler (Industrial Design to be precise) so this makes sense for me to own but the average gamer would never need this. I'm in and out of Rhino, Solidworks, 3DS Max, Keyshot etc all day long. Having 10 cores at close to 5Ghz is VERY exciting for me, and a money saver (I think - we'll have to see this month's electricity bill but time is still $$$). Just ordered all the parts for my custom loop to try and cool it down a bit! I'm also excited for Threadripper but I'm also a realist and we've been burned by AMD before... When it comes to professional use my trust isn't entirely there with AMD (yet). If Threadripper is what we think then at least I know I can sell this silicon lottery winner for a good penny on eBay.

Why the hell didn't they learn from Kabylake and not put some decent thermal paste or better yet solder under the heat spreader this time around? Though seeing the price of the top end CPUs perhaps intel thought everyone would use phase change cooling...
@CaptainKenway7 жыл бұрын
Broadwell-E was soldered. That's why they were only regular housefires instead of mini nuclear reactors.
@ViolentMLG7 жыл бұрын
In intels defense, there is a benefit to putting the paste they use VS a solder, while temps are worse, its a very stable thermal paste, soldered CPU's have had issues, not to mention that they just manufacturer things differently.
@TEDdeMedici7 жыл бұрын
Violent If it must be thermal paste - and i realise the very valid longevity argument - why doesn't intel go with a half decent thermal paste for dissipating heat? If people can delid the chip and lose 20 degrees whilst pushing higher clocks and voltage there must be better options for intel.
@ArtisChronicles7 жыл бұрын
T.E.D. de Medici they've done this every generation just about. remember the 4770k? yeah bad TIM there, the 4790k was the fix for that. there was a cpu in ivy bridge that had some bad TIM too, not that I remember the one from ivy. the move to TIM on ivy is kind of what had some people holding onto their sandy bridge chips. Better temps because of solder.

Just to add a bit of something here. The discrepancy between i5 7500 and i5 7600K in gaming is most curious. Spec wise, 7500 frequency is 3.4-3.8 GHz while 7600K is 3.8-4.2 GHz. A difference of approximately 10.5%. Both being the same quad core with 4 threads. But in the 4 games tested. Their differences in terms of % 7600K is faster in average FPS than 7500 is as follows: Battlefield 1: 19.5% Mafia III: 14.8% Hitman DX11: 26.9%! Ashes of Singularity: 12.5%. Why is there such differences when they are all but identical architectural wise except clock speed?
@ArtisChronicles7 жыл бұрын
Seramics this is something I never understood and I've seen it before. something is amiss. maybe not with the testers, but more along the lines of what's locked with the 7500 sku vs the 7600k skus.

I have looked at literally every single review/video/preview and I can't see one that shows comparisons for gaming with these 3 overclocked (specifically the 7800x), I find it hard to believe the ryzen would beat this chip for gaming in most titles, and yes I want to see 1080p or even 720p comparisons so the graphics card is taken out of the equation. Also keep in mind that this is early days for the bios and I think you will see a fairly big difference in the days to come regarding the performance of these new chips.

I wonder what Ryzen 7's performance would've been had they added another two memory channels. it's also quite interesting to see Intel change their cache architecture - previously, it was an inclusive setup, with everything in L2 mirrored in L3, but now the L2 has been increased by four times per core, with a large reduction in L3 in order to suit its now exclusive nature (presumably, more cores mean inclusive is less effective and more power hungry).
