Yeah, but it's unfortunate that it's not really happening on the same products. Anything that cannot run real x86 (at the ISA level) is forever stunted in some way, there's simply too much software (and compilers) written for it. Which is why the only company that has really managed to get an x86 replacement to work is Apple, because they just do full emulation of the ISA. But since x86 (or at least its modern version) is entirely entirely patented, nobody can compete on implementing it, not even if they use merely the instruction encoding, due to how extreme the patent system is. Apple could only do it because Intel acquiesced, and Intel only acquiesced because Apple is a larger corporation than them and they have the brute power to make a court fight risky. Pre-social caveman rules, basically. I know I am never going to buy anything other than Intel or AMD. That's not because I have brand loyalty, but because those are literally the only two companies that are allowed to make chips that can run my software.

Lunar Lake is looking to be the biggest improvement for windows laptops ever. It's basically akin to when Apple made their M1 chip, except Lunar Lake is M3 performance, except with Intel since they arent changing overall architecture, there is no software issues like we see with Snapdragon and we briefly saw with the M1. Lunar Lake is a game changer, and surprisingly AMD is now behind in efficiency and iGPU performance.

It wasn't Qualcomm which lit up the efficiency fire under Intel's bu^^. Because you can't answer to something like that in a couple of months. It was Apple, 4 years ago when they launched M1 which lit up the efficiency fire. That's how long architecting, designing and manufacturing a chip takes. And it can take even more than 4 years. I'm baffled about this "launch". Apparently actual reviews come only on 24th of September ? This seems to have been only a pre-launch hands on. Now wainting for another 3 weeks will be a bit painful. But I am excited about Lunar Lake, I really hope Intel didn't screw this one. I was mostly alone in battling people which were touting "hurr ArM iS sO mUcH mOrE eFfIcIeNt tHaN x86. durrr die x86" and I tried to explain that Apple's M efficiency comes from more sources, not ARM alone. Two of the major ones was memory directly on chip and better manufacturing node. Now Intel did both with Lunar Lake. Once the drivers for Linux are matured, we'll be able to see a proper ARM vs x86 comparison that's more apples to apples (pun unintended).

Don't worry Winnetou17, I was with you. I will always be with you and the others who knew that the M1 chips were a mix of dirty tricks to get that efficiency. The biggest reason I always brought up was TSMC 5nm being compared to Intel 14nm. That's such a huge difference alone. Then of course there were also tricks like the RAM being part of the CPU die like with this new Intel chip and the SSD also being placed right next to the CPU.

@@betag24cn x86 is immortal. ARM is not. ARM is on borrowed time. The future is x86 on desktop and RISC-V everywhere else. The laptop space will be shared between RISC-V and x86. There is 44 years of tradition and legacy behind x86 that is very pro-consumer *and* pro-business. The concept of ATX motherboards for example is just foreign to ARM fanatics. The concept of a standard bootloader is also just lost on them. Go on the Arch Linux page for ARM builds and you have to select a specific build instead of just downloading the same ISO like everyone else. An i5-2500K based computer can run the same Arch meant for a Ryzen 9950X. Arch Linux however meant for a Raspberry Pi 4 is not going to run on a Snapdragon ARM chip.

What would really improve the x86 space would be if Intel and AMD were forced to open up the architecture. At minimum, have a publicly-available specification for the architecture that anyone can read and implement free of charge, but which is maintained by Intel and AMD. Ideally, the x86 architecture would be turned over to a non-profit, like the Khronos Group, which maintains OpenGL and Vulkan. Of course, you can go and implement it yourself for free, so long as you stick to the parts from more than 20 years ago, which basically means the latest thing you can be compatible with and not have to pay any fees would be an Athlon 64.

Only if the program utilises all those threads, which they rarely do. And if they’re not being utilised, hyperthreading is simply a drain on power and a waste of space.
