(Topic: NO warranty?I) I've been watching these videos since LS was opening desktop towers on park benches, and I tend to find myself fairly in-line with his takes when it comes to topics likes right-to-repair, digital game licenses & marketplaces, ROMs & emulation, etc.. I also rarely-if-ever comment on YT videos. However, the exclusion of a robust warranty with the backpack is a stark departure from where I had hoped to see LS stand. Consider the following: 1. LTT is new to the backpack market. 2. You're charging a premium price for an admittedly premium-looking product. 3. If you have the confidence to have invested all this capital in a premium product in a market you are newly breaking into as a company, why is your corporate confidence in this product bathed in vague language like "we'll deal with it." How is this not at complete odds with your promise to hold Framework publicly and transparently accountable to their founding principles? I also found the whole "I don't want my wife to be liable for my promises" thing weirdly uninformed and dodging-the-question if not straight up ignorant. Unless you have been incredibly careless in exposing yourself to personal liability while setting up your business empire, in what world would LTT-as-a-company's product warranties come back to hold your family personally liable? The argument is incredibly flimsy and screams "we don't know if this will flop and we're hoping our goodwill keeps us riding the wave," even if that is not what you are wanting to communicate. Especially considering your own admission that you have aspirations for LMG & the creator warehouse to branch out into a host of new-for-you product markets. Imagine a corporate statement from any other company charging $250 for a product they've newly unveiled that said "Hey guys; there is no warranty. If there are problems, we pinky promise we will deal with it. Please trust us because of our reputation." You'd be instantly taken aback. This is no different. (Edit: ) The best benefit-of-the-doubt angle I can see is that this is the best answer you came up with on-the-fly. However: You should know better. I hope you do better.

Lets not forget number 4: They are constantly, and i mean CONSTANTLY claiming that it was designed to last a decade. Then man tf up, and put it a ten year warranty on it. Until then, your claims are worth less than toilet paper. You KNOW that they are regularly making claims about how it will last a decade. Why TF is it okay for them to make claims like that and put anything less than a ten year warranty on it? We bash companies for this exact damn marketing bullshit. Why should LTT be exempt from this? NOONE should have the right to say 'it will last a decade' without putting a 10 year warranty on it. Claims are worthless if the warranty says otherwise. If they retroactively put a 5 year warranty, that means they LIED when they said 'it was designed to last a decade'. Its designed to last EXACTLY as long as the warranty says. If its wrong from other companies to make claims like this, then its wrong for LMG too! ESPECIALLY because they are supposed to be better, we look at LMG as a superior company to all the other lying and cheating bastards, so LMG should start acting like it, damnit!

@@nemtudom5074 That's not how product warranties work - yes, it may have been designed to last a decade. A lot of products on the market are also designed to last that long. The only thing I can think of that has a warranty of 10+ years are Hermann Miller chairs and you're paying a LOT for one of those, way more than a backpack. Not even cars have a warranty that long, and how many 10+ year old cars do you see on the road? Warranties are designed to primarily cover manufacturing defects, not to cover being absolutely abused by a user. Are they designed to last a decade? Sure. Will they actually last a decade? Depends on the user. That's why most products have at most a two year warranty as that's generally a cut off for when a issue is a user fault and not a manufacturing issue. I agree though, these things need some form of standardised warranty, especially considering they're *$250*. tl;dr - a ten year warranty is just as unreasonable as having no warranty at all.

That's an unfortunate decision on the backpack warranty. I had the tab open on the store page to get in on wave 2 despite no longer going to school and only needing a backpack for short trips, and hearing that gave me pause. Even if as a company you have a pretty good track record of just fixing issues, having a solid warranty shows confidence in the product being reliable, to begin with, and gives the customer confidence that any issues will leave them taken care of. Especially with a premium product with a premium price. Some of the most lauded products showcased on LTT, rightly, place emphasis on the amazing warranties. 12-year Seasonic warranties, lifetime Darn Tough socks, limited lifetime Steelcase, 1 year+ LL Bean, Wyrmwood's Craftsman's Promise. Premium products with premium warranties. "The company might fold or I might die" doesn't seem like a healthy thing to plan for, especially if the plan that results from that is no plan. Were that the case, Labs wouldn't be worked on since the company could fold before it gets off the ground. As a customer it just feels like a weird anti-consumer stance to take and I'll be holding off on my purchase for if or when that policy changes. I know my one lack of purchase won't make a huge difference and my one comment on youtube is probably nothing, but it's what I can do to vote with my wallet. It's a shame because I was looking forward to supporting the company and getting a sweet backpack.

No, you weren't. You were just looking for an excuse not to spend $250 on an item that you probably don't need. If you know anything about Linus or his company, you know full well that no matter what you buy, they'll take care of you if anything goes wrong. He makes this abundantly clear in pretty much every video.
@RoximRox
@RoximRox 2 жыл бұрын
@@NobodyYouKnow98 I don't know if this is some weird gatekeeping thing for only being subscribed for 5 years or some weird "not a real fan" thing, but in reality you're partly right. At the end of the day, I don't know Linus or his company. I'm gonna paraphrase the words he says to us every time AMD, Nvidia, or Intel do some anti-consumer stuff: they're not our friends, they are a company looking to make money off of us. That's fine, but the only way we have of letting them know we're not happy with some decision is to tell them, and then vote with our wallets. About it being an item I probably don't need, you're 100% right about that. I've had the same swissgear backpack for about a decade and the only actual issue with it is some light fraying on the banding of the shoulder straps. I most likely wouldn't be one of the people who would be submitting a warranty claim, but for me it's the principle of a premium product not having ANY warranty in writing. You can always go above and beyond what you have listed like Costco and LL Bean do, but there should be a minimum guaranteed standard of care. At the end of the day, a verbal agreement isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Finally, kind of weird to start your response with some baseless assumption about my thought processes and money spending habits. I'm no stranger to spending too much money on stuff that will seldom see use; I collect board games, steelbooks, and artbooks. Doesn't mean I can't and won't disagree with a company's business decision.
@Ruboka

I feel very much the same. His stand that no company is your friend is true but he turns around to defend his decision we have to trust him seems very vague. 250 cad plus tax plus shipping can get very expensive , i know. "I value legal mumbo jumbo over the actual actions of a company" Have you dealt with warranties often? You should do some reading because even the best written warranties have been interpreted to favor the company. Things like "lifetime guarantee", "quality assured", etc all have very specific legal definitions that don't mean what you think. It's possible a written warranty would technically cover less than his current "make it right" warranty policy. What is unfortunate is all of you people assuming there is no warranty simply because he doesn't have the typical cookie cutter warranty written down somewhere. Instead of that, they operate on a "make it right" principle. That's a warranty. It already exists.
@RoximRox
@RoximRox 2 жыл бұрын
@@thysonsacclaim Sure, but now I have both. They still have the "make it right" principle while now also having something written down that *shows* confidence in the product. Obviously it was important enough to enough people that they've spoken at length about the topic in basically each of the subsequent WAN shows and altered their stance to to be in line with people's expectations. Not sure why this seems to be a problem. If you feel that the company would lower the level of care/support out of some form of laziness or spite, then I'd say you didn't actually have confidence in the "actual actions of the company". If you don't believe that, I don't see the issue. I'm happy. There was a policy I was uncomfortable with, they took feedback and addressed those concerns, and as of 8/26's WAN show at 33:14, I've got my order in. TL;DR: They still have their make it right policy alongside the written policy. I'm happy and bought my backpack.

LTT has always discussed warranties from a consumer standpoint and has constantly called out companies for not honoring warranties, or having bad warranties, for the products they review. But now that it’s a product coming from LTT…warranties don’t matter? What a weird hill to die on from the LTT crew. Shows how out of touch Linus has become. I feel like if $250 was the price at which LMG could justify selling the backpack, then he should have done the responsible thing and priced it higher so that an actual warranty could be included in that price. The last time I bought a Dell, I noticed that they note the computer and service costs separately on their invoice, and the included limited warranty is actually like 1/8 of the retail price. If the backpack were $280, then $30 of every sale could be saved up as insurance for any possible warranty issues, and convince the buyers that the price is justified. This is literally what every company has to do, and this is why companies like Apple and Dell cost so much, but also they have really good customer service. So really, unless you're a fanboy, just buy an Alienware Horizon backpack for half the price and get a 3-year warranty included.

The quality of a product is one thing, the support it receives is another and I hope that's not a metric that's ignored; I'd accept a product with a more responsive support team and more willing to replace (a la Anker) over a cheaper product even if they're both basically the same (or in some cases even a little worse) if I can be comfortable with it. warranties don't hold any weight over the individuals running the company, only the company itself; seems like a bad idea to not have a warranty just because of an illusory risk For shipping costs, you should use a service that lets you ship inventory in bulk (e.g. a warehouse as a service) in the eurozone -- you don't have to be a company there because you can outsource it.

If you get charged taxes again when receiving the shipment - you typically can't take it with the last mile delivery co. because they say we are just charging you what the country's customs are charging us. And then you talk to customs and they say that the paperwork of the shipper didn't reflect that the taxes were prepaid so they charge you the taxes and import duties based on the values in the invoice. It is the original shipper that didn't file the proper paperwork to avoid the double charge (or their local partner). So in reality it is LTT - or in this case Shopify - that can fix this. This happened to me on 2 LTT purchases and to be fair LTT support was very good and fast at solving it and refunding me. I have also noticed that the latest 2 shipments from LTT went through customs properly and without a hitch, so it looks that they fixed it.

@SierraLimaOscar
@SierraLimaOscar 2 жыл бұрын
@@thejdi Before the goods were sold with 0% local tax and when they arrived at the EU entry point (typically your local customs office) you had to pay the importation duties (if any), local taxes and a processing fee. I also had to fill out a form and email it to the shipping agent. Only after doing this process the goods were released to you. A while ago I noticed a change when shopify started calculating the local taxes at the checkout step of ltt store. I had seen this before with other no EU online shops (B&H is one of them) where when I placed and paid the order the goods arrived directly to my door and the shipping agent of the vendor took care of everything else. B&H will actually send you a recap of the importation costs after it is done and refund you if they overcharge at checkout (they are THAT professional). So this is what I expected from lttstore the first time I saw this option applied at checkout. Unfortunately it didn't work, but as said before the support team rectified the wrong in a fast and efficient manner (very professional too). The last two orders that i placed recently (July) arrived direct to my door and everything worked as it should. I hope this explains it better and you will know if it applies to you or not.

Hey Linus, I understand that setting up a warehouse overseas yourself might be out of reach, but is it maybe an idea to find a reseller to partner with in Europe? That way you can move inventory in bulk, which might be cheaper than 1 by 1 shipping. I'm in the same boat that I would love to take a backpack but it's a little out of reach with the shipping cost. I do understand it though! Have a great day! Greetings from NL.

A partner would need margin. So either the price would be higher or LTT would need to make less money per item. This is hard to get right even if you specialize in backpacks. For a firm that has a very wide range of merch and whose main business is something completely different and gets the entire customer base seeing North American pricing it's just brutal. If you look at Louis Vuitton purses or Porsche cars they have VERY different prices in different countries. Customers do try to get around these differences by buying in Paris, New York, or Vancouver. Much harder to handle the customer issues when it's online store rather than mostly physical store only

Now what happens is customer pays double the import tax first one to import it to CA which is included in the price and second one that is for importing it to EU. If that came directly from China I'm sure extra $20 or even more of profit for a reseller would still be massively cheaper :) Intra-EU shipment is quite cheap compared to Canada/US (and a $50 price for shipping to EU) and avoiding that massive tax $70 would be worth it alone. Now if I want to order it it costs whopping $369 to get it. If they were so pro-consumer as they claim they would find a way, they just don't want to waste energy and time to do so, because they don't care :)

One thing that helps with the thing Luke said, where a developer will make huge leaps and bounds in one day, then get stuck for days on something simple because they just didn’t see it, is pair programming. It sounds like it will double times to complete things by putting two devs on the work of one dev, but since development work time consists so much of those cases where they’re stuck on one thing that was actually pretty easy, it ends up being a huge increase in efficiency since it basically halves the chance of that issue happening in any given situation. It is hard to convince devs who haven’t done pair programming that it’s a good idea and not a huge pain, but once you start doing it, you realize the benefits of getting to talk to a coworker all day while working, especially when remote. It also helps reduce the issue where one dev will get stuck and be embarrassed to ask for help, since they will eventually pair with someone who understands and can explain it to them.

I would almost compare it to that teacher at school, who really made a difference to you and maybe impacted your life more than you knew at the time. @G T I think a lot of the... let's call it "age gap" in KZbinrs comes from the lack of experience, knowledge and capital in young, new(er) KZbinrs. Sure, they are great at streaming and doing pranks, vlogs, fitness and other similiar stuff, but doing tech-reviews requires some form of cash-flow to buy the products, to be able to review them. One rather young tech-youtuber that comes to mind is "Optimum Tech", who is rather focused on PC-hardware reviews. Also, the review-market is rather saturated in my opinion, so putting a foot down is not easy imo. Now in the maker-space, it is a whole different ball-game. There the knowledge about business and the amount of capital needed to start is basically zero. Also these videos are mostly project based and you can see if they are competent at what they are doing by watching their progress in the project. Mostly they call out if they messed up and/or tell how they tackled their problem in other ways. Therefore the number of youtubers in that category are many more and very diverse in their content.

Here some ideas for The Lab: for backend:. 1. store frame time information, not 1% lows. Those can be cached/be calculated on the fly, but being able to see the frame time graph can sometimes be extremly helpful 2. test Intel 12th and 13th gen with DDR4 and DDR5 3. test CPUs at different RAM speeds (not entire generations, but for each processor). Currently, such speeds would be DDR4 2400, DDR4 3000/3200, DDR4 3600, DDR4 4800, DDR5 4800, DDR5 5600, DDR5 6400 4. Test 2 vs 4 DIMMs (RAM) 5. log RAM usage during CPU tests and VRAM usage in GPU tests 6. test applications at different settings (Blender ray count, game settings, etc.) If you are able to automate the testing process efficiently, this data could made a significant amount of time after the initial review. Not everyone buys on launch day, after all. Front-end: Features: 1. Comparison: allows you to pick 2-4 CPUs/GPUs and compare them in selected applications. Ability to individually toggle ReBar, RAM speeds and other testing platform details individually would be appriciated. This would make budgeting decisions like "should I buy an Ryzen 5 with fast RAM or a Ryzen 7 with less and slower RAM" easier. 2. Less written reviews, more auto-generated content. Frame time spikes or especially poor/good performance in certain applications, APIs like DirectX11 could be detected by the back-end and shown to the user in a Pros/Cons table of sorts. I hope any of this is of good use.

A few things that might not come up in personal testing with the cameras are how well they hold up in a hot environment. The hottest days of the year where I live reach 40 C and both cameras died because of the heat that was reached inside the car (much hotter than outside on sunny days). After the first hot day of the year, they began to malfunction and nothing I tried could fix them. More recently, many of the manufacturers are including maximum temperatures. Other things to look at would be Dashcams that are directly connected to the fusebox and are always powered vs ones that connect to the power adapter in the car. I've recently started down the rabbit hole and don't know if I'll ever find the bottom.

I would have so much cool ltt stuff if I could buy it for an reasonable price, but i can hardly justify a waterbottle for 65$ if a good one from the store cost max 30$. Bulk orders are also no option as you pay extra taxes in Germany as soon as you go over 150€. Backpack is the first thing I ordered, and it felt really painful doing it! It will most likely set me back over 400$ after taxes. But I think that there is a solution to the problem! Patner with Creators in EU and build a distribution network! You already sell jerrys knife, so there might be a cool creator that from the EU that wants to sell to NA and you can help each other out! Or maybe build a distribution center in europe an justify it by also shipping stuff from other creators with the same problem from north america. There must be hundreds! Pls find a way to fix this the eu market is big!

@@Gellhorn But you have to ship it to NA first as well. So instead of the container going to NA, one can go to Europe. Right now, the backpack travels from China to Canada and then from Canada to the EU - that's basically 3/4 of a world circumnavigation

@@tombrauey it wont make it more cheaper as you believe, because that ship shipping is already included into the backpack costs, additionally you need a team/warehouse etc in EU which will increase the prices again and most likely eat the "savings" you did in the first place. The firm impression Linus gave in the rucksack/backpack video was that it came with a ten year guarantee/warranty as he specifically mentioned that length of time for the product to last. However, the statement in this video is, unless I'm mistaken, that there is no set guarantee period for the rucksack/backpack. Even as a Canadian seller, you are still legally required to provide a 12 month guarantee on products sent to the UK, and most parts of the EU - and at least one EU state has an 18 month requirement. All of that is ignoring legal protections *from* international sellers where the product should last 'a reasonable length of time' which is subjective but could be five-10 years for a premium rucksack.

@@stefanmisch5272 Incorrect. If you order from outside the EU and tax is included, it means you are paying the destination country VAT through IOSS (Import One Stop Shop) system (and any import duties which are often zero). I order a lot from the US to Europe. Honestly, I was surprised you could do $50, and knew you basically had to subsidise to reach that price, even with beeing set up for international shipping and great carrier rates. A lot of people probably rarely order items from the US that are not the big A and were surprised that it HAD to be that expensive to ship. And not acustomed to Tax collection via IOSS (the system to charge VAT in place of EU countries for shipping there) as direct collection is something a lot of sellers didn't implement until last year. Which just caused the buyer to be charged tax PLUS a carrier fee on delivery. It's actually cheaper this way for the customer. It adds up to a lot of money and I can understand the frustration of people. Might have been beneficial if you had some info pop up for international customers who encountered the system for the first time.

Backpack shipping to belgium for example is something like 360$ shipped (baseprice, VAT and shipping i assume). But on arrival the local customs charge a flat fee of 30$ to open your file, and then something like 20-40% as an import tax for extra-eu packages. So it ends up around roughly 450-500$. It's not LTT's fault, it's just the disadvantages of living in europe and ordering from outside of it 😅

Using your logic on people building Intel machines and trusting them. Then AMD Radeon GPU's wouldn't have done nearly as well as they have... With the success of Zen and somewhat relative success of RDNA2, it just goes to show. You need to offer proven performance well into the first release, before people start trusting and adopting. The whole shipping debacle has always been an issue. I remember looking at buying a simple sling for an airsoft rifle, nothing too complex or heavy, the sling itself was 15-20 USD, but the shipping fee was 100 USD... In short, I ended up paying the same amount for a product in China and got cheaper shipping on that one, had it been 20 USD shipping, I could accept it, even if it was 100% of the value of the product. Another crazy example was when I was looking at buying bulk harddrives and then got the shipping quote. For 400 USD worth of harddrives, the shipping cost was 4 digits... So for fun, I did price out what it would cost me to book a plane ticket, go there, pick it up in person and take them back in my checked in luggage, and it would actually be cheaper than a have a dedicated freight company do it for me from the US to Europe.

A lot of Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc come to the UK to buy and bring back to sell again. Sold a cup and saucer for £20 yesterday. If you want a rabbit hole, go and look up "china search". One lesson I have learned from antique dealing, people will collect anything. 1920s rubber - £20, rare pencil sharpener - £200 and the list goes on. Some antiques/vintage are just better quality or can be used today still e.g. tools, camera lens, retro calculator, vintage kitting magazines, retro games, etc. The fact it's not your taste doesn't mean it's not somebody else's.

Regarding shipping costs. As a truck driver, I can tell you a minor breakdown for the cost of what it would take to operate one truck. I spend about $1,000 a day on fuel thanks to exorbitantly high gas prices. We got insurance fees that are out of the wazoo like tens of thousands of dollars annually, truck payments, trailer payments, maintenance charges, bills, permits, freight insurance, payroll, building operations and maintenance, etc etc etc. My company does annual profit reports to be transparent with the employees, and most trucking companies are like this, we are very low profit. Most drivers haven't seen a decent pay increase since the 1980s. And this isn't limited to just the big rigs either, it also includes small delivery vehicles, vans, big hulking trains, massive freighter ships, and to a certain extent, airplanes! Amazon prime uses your annual fee, and then cuts corners everywhere they can to save on shipping like using the postal service to deliver large packages instead of UPS or fedex. They also surcharge the warehouses and manufacturers for the fuel costs and other expenses so they have to raise their prices. As Linus says; there's no free lunch!

No warranty? I've watched since before the first Scrapyard Wars, and the videos helped me build my first PC 7 years ago. I rarely disagree with Linus on any given topic, especially right-to-repair, emulation, anti-consumer practices. I think I've commented on less than 5 videos, but I gotta call out LS/LMG for the warranty policy for the backpack (or lack thereof). This was a product that was heavily invested in, along with the screwdriver. I don't know what the policy is with the screwdriver or other products, but I'm concerned with the companies stance regarding the backpack, and it's disappointing that I feel compelled to call anyone out for this decision. If you are a company selling a physical product, having no warranty of any kind is a massive red flag that tells people not to purchase a product. LMG is a company, selling physical products. Is it company policy to not include a warranty on ANY of your products, including your screwdriver? This is not a way to drive sales on any product you heavily invested into, and you are unnecessarily reducing your potential market of customers specifically based on some vagaries that don't add up to sound, reasonable business practices. Will Framework offer warranties? How will their warranties be affected by using the product as intended? Why would you hold Framework to a higher standard that LMG? It honestly seems like nepotism has put the company in an uncomfortable position where Linus needs to choose between the company being responsible to its customers, or safeguarding his family because they work there. I'm not saying that said nepotism was a poor business decision, as it has clearly led to much success. The "reason" provided for LMG the company not offering a warranty for their products is because; Linus, the owner, is concerned that his family, (specifically his wife who works there) would be on the hook for the warranty service in the unfortunate circumstances where Linus ceased to exist, regardless of whether the company survives or not. One should have absolutely nothing to do with the other. One is a company-wide policy that affects the company and its customers, and the other is a concern about the debts that Linus incurs while alive that could transfer to his family. Personal matters should not determine whether you provide a customer of your company with a positive experience using standard policies. This policy needs to be seriously considered in the interest of transparency and more relevant, ACCOUNTABILITY, which you preach with the Framework brand. Until then, I will not consider purchasing any product from your company unless I see the warranty in bold.
