maybe a stupid question, but why would you pick one of those instead of a 5950x (3rd,- of the price)? Maybe you need quad channel memory, or a lot of PCIe lanes? raw cpu power doesnt seem anything different, so I guess its got a special use case?

it's for a workstation, that supports DDR5 memory

@@HPCWH surely for the price of that CPU you could of brought a whole system?

@@Roguey Maybe, but can a 5950x(which i have) run a Linux that's VM'ing a NAS, and a WinOS all at the same time? It may be so. Problem there is you're going to have performance issues up the ying yang all across the board. With this type of Xeon you can dedicate multiple cores for multiple OS, Nas systems at the same time and barely break any performance. It's a beast of a CPU.

@@justisstudding2101 I can't see why a 16 core would struggle with that. The xenon has a lot of pcie lanes, and quad channel but 5950x is very powerful too. But I know it can have it's limitations

I have a stupid question, maybe, maybe not. You installed that CPU with out thermal paste. Is it required? Since the CPU has a metal foil sticker on top. I have a E5-2699 v4 that has the same type of metal foil sticker. Do these types of Xeons need thermal paste?
