Tiger sharks are washing up dead on the beaches of Western Australia with no sign of attack. Forrest Galante has a theory that deadly sea snakes are turning these apex predators into prey. In the battle of shark against snake, are snakes winning?

That's a weird way of going about finding out what is killing the sharks. It would be relatively easy to develop a lateral flow test to detect specific snake venoms, and simply test the flesh of the dead sharks. Come to think of it, it should be possible to develop multi strip lateral flow tests to test the blood of snake bite victims to determine which snake species has envenomated them and tailor treatment accordingly.

Maybe that wasn't possible with the timeframe? Idk just a guess, but Forrest's crew more often than not only have a couple of weeks in the field and can't waste that waiting for test results. It's why any hair samples, scale samples, fecal matter and blood is collected and stored properly to preserve it for when they leave and can take it to proper labs and storage facilities for samples to be included in pre-existing research. The specimens in this video of the tiger sharks also weren't found by the team, so unless one of the sharks was find within a reasonable time and samples taken, it would likely be deemed a time consuming and risky expense to just wait around and hope you find one and then hope you take a good clump of tissue that had actually had the venom reach it.

@@Reptile_Gecko Turns out that lateral flow tests have been developed in Brazil in order to detect the species of snake that has bitten someone and optimise treatment. AFAIK, this is the only application so far, but in a place like India, where a lot of people are bitten at night, such a test could save thousands of lives.

wouldn't make a good TV show though bruh. also, the snake being in there could just have been a coincidence. sharks eat all kinda wild stuff. they did it in the most scientific way.

No snake is in a tiger shark the snake just tied up the tiger shark and it died and the snake ran away and it got wash up on the sea🫤
