The great white shark has a fearsome reputation and diving with them is definitely risky business. However, Mexican zoologist Mauricio Hoyos believes that their aggression is triggered by excessive disturbance in the water, and hopes that Frederic may be able to observe the calmer side of these infamous predators.

It’s so upsetting that the Mexican government has essentially abandoned the stunning nature preserve that used to be Guadalupe Island. As of January (I think) 2023, they’ve withdrawn all protections and residents on the island, and have put a complete halt to any and all marine biologists/researchers/documentary crews/boats/shark cage diving outfits, etc from diving, boating, or filming at the island. Their Coast Guard isn’t really there now, either (unless I’m remembering that part wrong), so it leaves the island and all the marine life so vulnerable. The big problem with this is that the constant presence of the research crews and shark cage diving outfits keep the fishing boats away, protecting the sharks (and probably the seals) from the possibility of exploitation and risk of being caught and killed for their fins. Kristian, a shark scientist, has a KZbin channel called Shark Bytes. He recently did an excellent video on this issue, and it’s truly horrifying. I hope there will be enough public pressure put on their government down there, so that these beautiful sharks, whales, dolphins, and all the other fabulous creatures in that environment will be protected from harm once again.😭😭

@@SACITYTEXAS Anytime! He has an excellent channel! Another I’d highly recommend is TheMalibuArtist. He also did excellent video on the closure/abandonment of the island and what that may mean for the majestic great whites and other precious marine creatures who live there. Plus, his channel is mostly filled with aerial/drone footage of great whites swimming amongst people in the ocean. It’s endlessly fascinating to watch and I bet you’d love that channel, as well. 😀

Are you blind? The sharks tried to catch them all the time... always looking for an opening to attack. And they almost succeeded a few times. They were very lucky, even with a big team and always one covering the other's back, a tragedy almost happened there. If they had not been focused on a large group of people watching at all times, in transparent waters and during the day, they would have all been snacks. White sharks are ambush hunters, all they seek is a breach, an opening. These guys are crazy and reckless, they rolled the dice and got lucky this time. Next time they might not be so lucky and become statistics.

Don't be fooled by edited images... the sharks tried all the time to force an opening to attack them. And they almost succeeded a few times. A tragedy was very close to happen there. Even with 4 people in the water together, one covering the other's blind spots, the sharks almost made an opening for an attack. A human being alone would have been devoured on camera. Make no mistake, it was not a calm dive, they took a real risk and were very, very lucky not to have entered the statistics.

I was just about to comment on the misinformation regarding the biggest predator in the ocean . Then I see someone beat me to it, it may be the largest predatory fish but the orca is far bigger and as we now know often kill great white sharks. Usually removing their nutrient rich livers. In actual fact a pair of orcas drove great white sharks away from a particular coastline in SA.
@JuniorMonteiroOficial
@JuniorMonteiroOficial 11 ай бұрын
The largest recorded orca was 9 meters, the largest recorded great white shark was 7 meters. The orca reaches up to 6 tons and the great white from 3 to 4 tons. Speaking of maximum size and strength ever recorded, both are equivalent. But when it comes to jaws, attack, the orca doesn't stand a chance against the great white shark. A one-on-one between the two, the great white would win. The orca is a terror to the seas because it walks in groups. Its strength is in the group. One orca alone can do nothing against a great white. On the contrary, it runs away and avoids the shark. In fact, they both avoid each other because they know that a confrontation could mean death.

Now Isla Guadelupe is forever closed to ALL tourism, yet they are OPEN TO COMMERCIAL FISHING. 😠. Locals that depended on tourism for their livelihoods will likely turn to fishing again. I am worried that illegal poaching will decimate the GW population, as well as other species. We know that chinese pay top price for their coveted shark fin soup. Now, because of minor shark cage accidents, there will be NO ONE to keep eyes on conservation. The Cartel will fully engage in illegal practices. Measures MUST be put in place for observation patrols as the Mexican government is notiriously famous for corrupted officials. 😢
