Thanks for articulating this Wes. I grew up in a modest environment, read a lot of what I thought were good books, then entered an Ivy institution and became disillusioned in the exact progression you outlined in the middle of the video. What I can add from my reflections are 2 tangent themes: 1. The Ivy mill was always a social pact given by the existing elites, to the new-generation "non-elites yet capable" and their own progeny. The "nepotism" children feel validated in lectures mingling with actual geniuses, while the geniuses have a chance at becoming/serving elites for (very) above middle-class outcomes. The underpinning of this system hasn't changed. It's what the zeitgeist considers to be "elite trappings" have. 2. From these institutions' roots as Protestant seminaries, perhaps close knowledge of scripture and natural sciences were valued - in this world, comprehending primary text, memorization trumped as method. Today, the epistemic system of US society suggests/demands, that the ability to regurgitate neoliberal talking points while functioning as a James Burnham described "managerial class" is seen as East Coast elite - here, having read "airport books" while repeating "liberal democratic order" lores and scholastic dogmas matter. As a result, the house of intellect crumbled. And interestingly, if you ever came across the Goodreads profile of Luigi M. the recent shooter, his reading list has much for one to chew on Once again appreciate your candid thoughts shared on this platform

Recently I found a topic that interested me and went, "Oh this could be the subject of the PhD I never done. Maybe I could join academia after all just to have the space to think about this..." And then I immediately went, "Wait. No. I've seen what academia is like on the inside! No one can think it that place!" I've had the misfortune of seeing scientists literally beg to be allowed to talk about science, instead of just budget woes. It's bleak. Best of luck with you new projects Wes 🙂

When it comes to washing dishes and folding laundry for oneself, I find it's during those mundane tasks that true down time is available for the creative mind. Or doing exercise, going for a walk, showering, pick your chore. There's actually nothing I want AI to do, aside from doing my taxes....maybe.

As someone that has purchased and owns a largish collection of books I am guilty of not reading enough although it is not in books that I found my own solace for intellectual metamorphosis. I found that place within my working environment and this place I am alone and not but ideas are grown here.

I once had a strong desire to become as smart as Caesar or Cicero. I decided that I would copy their books by handwriting. But after writing only 3-4 pages, my hand got very sore, and a big blister appeared on my finger, which looked like a bump. The bump went away after a few days when I stopped writing. I think this way is not suitable for all people. I also noticed that when I'm reading, I stop thinking. It's as if my thinking is directed only at understanding what is written, not at thinking. I suddenly thought that reading a lot is even harmful, because there is no time to think your own thoughts. Earlier books were rare, but intelligent people still existed.

I was put off reading by being forced to read at school. Even now in my 60s the thought of reading makes me feel depressed. As for the great thinkers of the past, perhaps young people feel there is no point reading their ideas. After all, if their ideas were so great, why is the World still in such an awful state?

I think it's important to emphasise that the conservatism that intellect could ally with is decidedly not the modern political phenomenon, but rather something quaint and historical which can no longer be found on the political right.

Eurocentric Teleologism = The idea that history is always moving towards a certain or inevitable good. I think this meshes well with your idea about us believing that the newest technology is the best form of engaging with learning because it’s the newest thing. Despite there being other ways to learn and go about business within the academy, we have fallen victim to the false belief that just because it is new, that makes it better.

Old school anarchist, first heard about Bakunin by reading Siege, by James Mason, it had a Bakunin quote as a chapter foreword. Highly recommend both authors.

I've watched most of your videos and I'm thankful for all of the knowledge and entertainment. However, there are two minor criticisms I have of your philosophy series. Firstly, your representation of the ideas of certain philosophers, eg- Socrates, Nietzsche and schopenhauer, is deeply biased by your negative view of academia. They would also disdain modern education but I think you have a bad habit if latching on to any anti establishment idea of theirs and over emphasizing the argument. One moment you're discussing the will to power, and the next, you're lamenting about the unfairness of homework. Somehow the parallels you draw seem forced. And secondly, you tend to focus on the man rather than the ideas. While it's important to understand the psyche of the philosopher, this over emphasis on the character and their life story leaves little time to explore the ideas. What you have then at the end of a lecture is a shallow understanding of the "greatest hits", which is arguably worse than having no understanding at all.

Well they are an hour max videos. How in depth of a person's work can you cover in such small time frame. They are best taken as introduction or general overview of the person's and their work.

@srspanksalot4501Күн бұрын
Brother, someone’s personal opinions have not much at all to do with their ability to preform social, political, or really any analysis. What he does by saying “religious nutjobs” is provide you some context for his bias. He doesn’t like people who are devoutly religious to a point that it becomes a mental health issue. That gives you a stronger ability to understand his points and what he is saying, because you understand some of where he is coming from.
