Tommy is the living representation of the episode of Rugrats where Tommy and Chucky imagined they were big people. He's a child pretending to be a businessman. He wants the big-boy toys and to be seen as someone important in the industry; and for awhile he got away with it. But eventually that shit comes to roost. Once he was in the top spot and got to be the one making the main decisions from the ground up, it's become clear that he has no idea what he's doing.

Worse still, he bought the name of a brand that was from his childhood and immediately used it for a toilet. He took one of his toys, and _ruined it._ He can't even recoup the investment cost because he's tanked the value. And what is he gonna do? He doesn't have a child, and I doubt he's gonna start having any at nearly 60.

Tommy's ego woudln't allow him to get basic office furniture. He didn't need fold up chairs or Costco specials, lots of small businesses and start ups can find good quality office equipment at reasonable prices both new or from liquidation. What's more telling is that the equipment they did buy shows that they have the mind set of an office from 20 years ago. These days places like Intellivision should of had hoteling stations where the workers have interchangeable and basic working areas. $120k With total payments being around $180k and monthly payments around $3k for 5 years or 60 months you are looking at a rate of 18% APR. A private loan even from hedge funds isn't that high closer to 15% during that time they signed the contract. However, furniture sales companies typically charge the same rate as credit card companies. Which at the time was closer to 20-29% APR for poor credit rated clients and 10-19% for medium ratings, prime-9 for best clients. So what intellivision signed was not a loan shark scheme but more a credit card account. My guess is that they had little to no credit history as a company but had to be co-signed or guaranteed by Tom. The rate more than doubled I would say because they defaulted. So they probably were charged 4-8% APR originally but then defaulted bringing the rate up for the defaulted amount ONLY not the entire term of the loan. Once current the standard rate applies to the principal. Still really stupid stuff not to pay your bills. Looks like the company bought the most expensive of everything that fortune 500 companies buy for their executives. The brand is called Herman Miller each chair can range by model from $800 to $1,800USD. EXTREMELY stupid to spend so much money as a startup what the hell were they thinking?

You can go to the thrift store and find file cabinets for damn near free. I can't really think of why they software hardware company would need a lot of file cabinets. Most of the stuff they work on it digital anyways.. but then again you can't apply logic this situation it'll just make you go insane

for my home studio i got a nice office chair, a big metal desk with multiple drawers, and a regular filing cabinet for free or damn close to free, because a thrift store was moving locations and I asked. I also have a bookshelf and a couple of tv trays that I use for space. works great and I doubt i spent two hundred bucks. that way I could more easily afford the expensive necessary stuff like the computer and mics and DAW and etc, which I buy and upgrade as I can, I built up a nice home studio for cheap that somewhat regularly improves noticeably. I'm not Captain Finance either, this just feels like basic shit. get what is in reach, use what you have, build from there

A quick survey of the scene captured shows how wasteful it was. That building was WAY TOO BIG. There’s Tommy and one person sitting there with a computer. And in the background you can see a beanbag chair on the floor. I.e. what was likely used by the employees. Not to mention, why did they even need two locations? They had nothing to sell. Besides hopes and dreams which will only strike the vulnerable once or twice before that income stream dries up.

When you ask for money you have to present costs and explain why you want a certain amount. Think of venture capitalists and Angel investors as crypto bros. If you want a million dollar investment, it’s easier to get it with big purchases. What happened with Tommy is not the furniture and other extravagances. It’s that he missed on delivery dates, deadlines and didn’t know how to deal with Chinese manufacturers and outsource people. When I was getting things done in China I had a Russian guy visiting the factory and sending me photo reports daily. He fell for the “trust me bro, sorry you know how it is” vendor. That’s what got him undone.

This sort of office furniture agreement is quite common. I've worked in the commercial furniture industry for 10 years, and had several clients finance their office furniture...including some larger ones you may have heard of in surprising industries (not just tech startups, I'm talking biotech, law firms, non-profits, etc). It only costs a little more than renting, and it's a better long-term choice because you end up with an asset at the end. But, it's a gamble...one that Intellivision shouldn't have taken. But guys, those mobile peds "the storage cabinets" are not for files and paperwork. Do you think it's 1988? XD They are so an employee has a place to put their purse/bag and lunch during the day. But, yeah...there are cheaper options available. you could get used/liquidated peds from companies that offered lifetime warranties when it was new (just as an indication of build quality) in the hundreds for $100 each. And these liquidation companies are set up to sell to businesses, including delivery, installation, replacing missing locks and keys, etc. They way they did it was insane for their position.
@XanthinZarda2 жыл бұрын
Do you think the sausagefest that was the Amico Bro crew really needed a place to put their lunch/purse when the facilities had an onsite kitchen? And even if what you are suggesting is plausible, do you really think they needed more than say, 3 of the damn things?
@necrojoe2 жыл бұрын
@@XanthinZarda if I had to guess, the on-site kitchen was likely the first amenity to get cut, if it actually provided meals at all. And I'm not sure why you think men would be any less likely to have bags with them. Most were likely provided with laptops, but besides that, there's medications, jackets, the graphic designers would have had sketchbooks and supplies, rulers etc... But I dont disagree that they only needed a few. My whole point was agreeing that they overspend, but that a $10 desktop file bin wasn't really a viable replacement.
@XanthinZarda2 жыл бұрын
@@necrojoe Sketch what, pray tell? Most of the Amico design would have been primarily finished and it's quite clear that a lot of the designs were in Tommy's head, if not simply lifted from elsewhere. Are you suggesting they just wouldn't have dropped directly into Blender?

"They are so an employee has a place to put their purse/bag and lunch during the day." I would keep my lunch in the office kitchen refridgerator like everyone else, and anything else stayed in my cubicle or 50-year old metal filing cabinet. Again, this is a startup with no revenue. And in the 2020's, I highly doubt they were working with many paper documents anyway -- it's all on the cloud or on a server. This was bravado and show.
