The Little 500 at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana is the longest, continually operating pavement sprint car event in America. This is one of my favorite races of the year. We have been going for about 10 years and it never fails to live up to the billing. I try to keep score every 25 laps and the actions are non stop. Speaking of Mr Dean, I was born in Salinas, CA in 1955! The track Dean was going to is Laguna Seca, which sits about halfway between Salinas and Monterey! John Steinbeck wrote many of his books about the area, and I vaguely recall driving past his house as a kid! Another great post, HMM! Thanks!

Man Don I need to attend that race someday! It does have a nice feel to it. Your video really captured the history and emotion of the place! A few days ago I listened to a Kyle Larson interview where they asked him what races he'd like to someday do. His FIRST reply was the Little 500 !! You mentioned Fairmount, Indiana. Interesting is that Fairmount is the hometown of Brandon Wimmer. As you'll recall you interviewed him a year ago at Atomic. Searching out an interesting storyline, you uncovered that Brandon hauls his car with an open trailer!! Don't see that too much these days do you? I can't believe all the craziness in the pits. Action all over the place. Don, once again you made a very realistic race video. The quality was stunning. Felt like I was there with you. Oh, and it's so neat that you many times get to interact with famous drivers. This time it was Mike Wallace. Love it. Thanks for what you do. Chuck

As I understand it, Larson has already asked the Seymours about the possibility of getting in their 29 car for the Little 500, so I'm not surprised to hear that. Who wouldn't want to try the 500 at some point...the Little one that is. It's definitely a super-cool event; I am now officially hooked...I'll be going back, God willing. Very few open trailers...only place I see them it seems is at Kokomo for the local shows. There is a Part 2 coming out on this year's Little 500. It won't be as action-packed as the first one...but still worth the watch. Thanks again Chuck! HMM

The thing that makes the Little 500 is the pit stops that all the cars must do. I think they each must make 2 pit stops. They have always been under the green flag when I have been at the race. Well we are talking sprint cars. Cars that are in no way shape or form designed to make a green flag pit stop. So when the crew completes the stop a push truck pushes the car towards the pit exit which is right at turn one. Well if the car doesn't fire the push truck keeps on pushing and comes right out onto the track and all the cars are at speed with this lone pickup truck going about 30 mph trying to get someones car to fire off. Sprint cars can be very tempermental when they are hot.

If I could only go to one race a year I would definately attend the Little 500. I always had wanted to attend the race but it's a 5 hour ride from where I live and we have our family "reunion" every year on race day. So I became friends with a gentelman named Art that was probably 25 or so years older than I was. Art had came into the shop that I worked at and we became friends immediately through the love of sprint cars and racing in general. Art had mentioned that he would be attending the race as he had been for over 20+ years. Art was trying to convince a woman he was chasing to come to the race with him. I told him if he ends up with an extra ticket I would love to be able to tag along. Well about a week prior to the race he offered me the ticket. I have been going to the races all over creation for over 50 years and I have seen more crazy things happen along with watching a driver make a move that you cannot believe that he actually pulled it off. I watched Tony Stewart catch a rut in a midget and drive on 2 wheels for a pretty good distance and set the car back down on all 4 tires and it didn't seem to phase him. I watched Kasey Kahne show up late at a sprint car show and they were going to run the heat races in like 20 minutes. They tagged him on the back of the fast heat race. With only 6 laps of practice Kahne was running 5th after the first lap. He split the 4 cars in front of him coming out of turn 2 and somehow got his car to squeeze between the others and as he was 3 wide he reached up and pulled a tear off. That was one time that I actually cringed as I watched it unfold. It takes something pretty wild to get me to react to something that happens on track. So the first time I was at the Little 500 I was totally blown away at all of the tradition and the vibe that flows through the crowd and the cars were pushed off, they got into formation and I was thinking that there wasn't enough room for 3 cars wide. When the whole field came bustin' ass out of turn 4 and came down the front straightaway wide open the hair stood up on the back of my neck and I got goosebumps on my arm's. I don't think I actually took a breath for the first 3 or 4 laps. Out of everything I have seen over my 50+ years of attending the races, sprint cars flipping into the stands, a guy flying out of his sprint car out of the top of his cage as he barrel rolled. I grew up on wing sprints Saturday at Butler and supermodifieds every Sunday night at Kalamazoo speedway, something wild happened almost every weekend. However, the Little 500 is hands down the one race that I would attend if I was told I could only go to one race per year. I am really pissed at myself for not attending until I was almost 50. I was lucky enough that Art and his two other friends that have all been attending the Little 500 for over 20 years, they enjoyed my company and they decided that they would offer me the ticket first for the future. We attended the next year and when guys are like 65-75 yrs old and they are 5 hours from home plus they really don't care what anyone thinks, they are just off the reservation having these crazy discussions about some off the wall subject that nobody really cares about but they would have people laughing basically about nothing. It was like a game these crazy old buzzards played just to see just how many people they could keep following the complete web of deceit they were spinning. I of course had ended up right in the middle of it. There was a certain amount of hazing that I had to endure. I would get sent to the concession stand only to return with what they ordered to then get sent out to the car for something that was purposely left so that I would have to run and get it. It was actually pretty fun, So it was 9 days before the race the following year and Mike ( one of the buzzards) called me at work and informed me that Art had passed away. I have only been able to attend once in the last three years due to my battle with some health issues. I am now in remission so I will be there next year with bells on. I try to promote the race to anyone that I have sat near at Butler for most of my life. People that attend basically every week always sit at or near to the same spot. My wife finally gave up after 21 years so I go by myself most of the time. As soon as I get to my usual seat I am no longer by myself. That whole coming alone but not being alone applies to pretty much anyone sitting anywhere in the crowd. Race fans tend to be some of the friendliest people and you can easily strike up a conversation. Of course this does not apply to everyone. Some people do not play well with others and if you get a one or two word answer to a question you were just seeing what kind of response you would get, that is generally the dead give a way that this particular person is probably the one you might want to just stay clear of . I tell amost everyone that the Little 500 must be on their bucket list. I will drive for 5 hours by myself if I have to. I used to have a 2.5-3.0 hour driving time limit but I threw that out the window when I had to retire almost 15 years early. I apologize for the crazy long post. I got to rambling on and on as I tend to do sometimes so please accept my apology. I actually had even more worthless information that isn't worth $0.02. so I deleted it. Thanks, Rich Peace

Another race with your excellent coverage from the infield. Nice conversations with several of the drivers. I like seeing Ryan Newman still getting opportunities to race. I haven't seen Mike Wallace for a number of years and wouldn't have recognized him. Were there more cars torn up this year than you've seen before? We saw some team members with bruised feelings who were unhappy with other crews. When it's time to get out of the pits, it looks pretty chaotic trying to get a push truck for your car. It's obvious that you have developed good relationships with the race teams when we see Dakoda's crew chief seek you out at the conclusion of the race for some quick comments after talking with you during a red flag.

Seems like there were a few more torn up than last year, but I've only been to the Little 500 twice, so not much to compare to. That event is chaotic start to finish...getting in, the race, getting out...it's a lot of work for all, including getting all your equipment down in the middle...everything. It seems that most of the people I come across may have watched some of the shows I do, which hopefully adds to my credibility...but I'm still building respect I can assure you that. You don't see some of my interview attempts that fall on their face. Armstrong's crew chief was exceptionally cooperative; that can be rare. I'm a real fan of that guy now. Thanks again, my friend. He's in the little 500 hall of Fame and received a lifetime achievement award for the 500. My Uncle Robbie ended up Married to Dave's daughter.

@@The_first_time_rc When Tony Stewart ran the race. I watched him stay connected to whoever was holding him up. He was ruthless. He was laying on the back bars around the tank and just shoving people out of his way. He ended up 3rd. He was the first 410 V8. I am pretty sure that a v6 powered car has taken at least the first 2 finishing positions for the last 5 or so years. Im not crazy. If you watch any video of the race, pause the leaders car and count the header tubes. 3 not 4 I dont agree with it but who am I to say

what scared me was to see them trying to do a quick fuel fill and guys are next to the tail tank and there is nothing worse than watching a guy jump around like a crazy man because he is on fire but you cannot see Methanol burn. I don't know if they automatically add the product that gives Methanol a visible flame or not.
