Once I was in a severe lightning storm while driving in my truck. I was completely surrounded by lightning. It seemed not 2 or 3 seconds went by without a strike or a multitude of strikes. It was breathtaking amazing and scary all at once. All I could say was...Lord...you hold my life in your hands! Never had I experienced an electrical storm with such magnitude.

Last summer me, my brother and my father went kayaking in a big lake with plenty of islands here in sweden. It was a hot day, slightly above 30 degrees celsius. We were going to spend the night in a tent on one of the islands. Around 3 am one of the most intense thunderstorms that I've ever experienced here hit us, with lightning strikes every 5 seconds. The whole tent lit up every time and some were pretty close. Being on an small island in the middle of a large lake felt pretty unsafe in those conditions but there was nothing you could do but to wait it out. Later it also turned out the thunderstorm carried a mini tornado (we don't get those large ones here luckily) but fortunaly it missed us. Otherwise we might had been lifted out in the open water with the tent and all in the middle of the night.

I'm amazed at how short those thunder crashes were. That's usually signifying a tornado, as I experienced those blasts of thunder just before a tornado either formed or came right at us. Pretty scary.

What an awesome supercell! Something I am still thoroughly baffled about and that is, why does the thunder in the U.S. sound different to that of storms in the U.K. or Europe?
@kingflynxi94208 жыл бұрын
There's no echo, if you went into the middle of nowhere, say Lincolnshire during a thunderstorm the thunder sounds really different
@dwdrum118 жыл бұрын
also because the lightning is so close, the further away you are it booms more, it cracks more the closer you are to the strikes!

The south, south-east and midlands do actually get thunderstorms like this with frequent lightning almost every second, but just very rarely, on average once or twice a year in the summer months, but you could be 40 miles away and in the same region but not notice a thing, very hit and miss. The English Channel tends to get the majority of the lightning fronts and most of the time they veer off to Holland and Germany, only taking a slight degree turn for them to curve off eastwards.

The one at 0:57 is definitely a positive strike. Single flash and very bright/wide channel. That's 1 GV and 300 kA right there.
@thelightninghunter235 жыл бұрын
Nope, negative. Positive CGs sound a lot more like a boom than a loud crash... and that's assuming the peak current is high enough. I recently captured a +CG that produced really soft thunder for a ground stroke because apparently the peak current was low (sub-15kA). It's a recent video on my channel.
@Kristoff30699 ай бұрын
No… It is a Negative staccato with a potential amperage of 65Ka. Had it been a positive, the channel would have been smoother and the thunder would have been much louder.

But I'm somehow strangely drawn to storms now the constant ricocheting type noise after a strike is my favorite. Just when I though our west Texas storms are bad may they be few nothing compares to an east Texas storm when a tropical storm comes rolling in.
