Great video. Nice not to see masses of graffiti along the sides of the track, unlike today.

For a non-train guy, there are three aspects of this footage that I find amazing. 1) That you were compelled to film such an ordinary experience; 2) That you labelled and kept all the video tapes until you converted to digital; 3) That you have captured a zeitgeist of yesteryear.

I have a confession to make. I did not video this, but a young trainee did. As he had also filmed me I asked for a copy. Of course, I edited myself out as I didn't want any offers from Hollywood. Once being asked if I wanted to join the Freemasons was bad enough.

NSE everywhere....how I remember it as a kid. Still a few 309s knocking about too, and the 321s were still pretty new and shiny at that point. 30 whole years ago, Christ! Almost everything has changed since then, Stratford area the most. Virtually unrecogniseable now. Better...? Hard to say. :-/

Sometimes they were borrowed from Freightliner at Ipswich when some of the 86s were out of service.

Better? Certainly not now. British Rail was the good old days.

The class 90s for the freight sector were delivered in 1989/90 so they were definitely around in 1990 on all the electrified freight routes, though still quite new.

Class 90’s could be seen on the WCML in 1987with increased frequency as new locos go delivered

Where was Stratford

The cameraman unfortunately missed filming Stratford, which was a pity, as it would have been interesting to see the old, much changed Stratford station.

@@steffanmaximum Stratford was a nothing shack back then. Even semi fasts turned their noses up at stopping there.
