What do you do when a locomotive needs just a little bit of TLC (tender loving care) before being put onto the tracks and enjoyed? What do you do if you have a loco that's sat on a shelf for years but you'd like to run it again? WATCH THIS! ;) Enjoy

The oil can get onto the loco wheels and spread ALL over your layout, transferring to all other locos and severely decreasing traction

I was thinking of making an HO/OO scale model of my LEGO engine Big Ben, a 6-10-8-10-6 articulated/turbine driven hybrid steam engine. The model I currently have is at 1/96 scale, a 6-10-10-6 version (I'm short on parts at the moment, I will show a full version when it's finished.)

Lovely! I can't wait for that one, as it will be the most helpful for a few locos that i've purchased, most of which have just been sitting in storage. I want to give them a total restoration service, but I need the info on what to do for the insides :)

I really aren't sure. So far, every B12 I've come across does indeed have that little feature - but it's possible that at some point it was made by someone else and didn't have that feature included.

Sounds like the motor might be on its way out. Motors don't last forever. If it's an old locomotive it could also be dry connections (dry solder) and a full service might help.

A synthetic model oil is better because it won't degrade the plastic. 3 in 1 is petroleum based so it can degrade the plastic if any of it ends up on it. Synthetic model oil is pretty cheap and lasts a very long time, well worth stocking up on it...

*Tender* loving care. Was that intentional? :P Is graphite lube any good for locos? Why do you guys never cover opening locos up for maintenance? The reasons you stated here don't hold up. There's always the chance that dust has gotten inside, or part of the contacting strip is grimy, or the loco was dropped and something's been jostled out of place (Especially if it's secondhand)...

It's called a Rolling Road. The one he has is the one made by Hornby. The Hornby version is no longer made, but other companies make similar ones and you can buy them just about anywhere. BTW, they ain't cheap, tho...

You should try to remove it as quickly as possible, perhaps with something like Goo Gone. The baby oil isn't as thick as regular synthetic oil, so its likely to drip all over your loco and track depending on how much you used. Its also petroleum based, so if it makes contact with anything plastic on your model it'll start to break it down. Might take a few days, but you'll start to see the effect parts turn white as it breaks down.

Those oil pens kick out far too much oil, you should put a drop of oil into a bottle cap, then apply it with the end of a paper clip (also much cheaper than an oil pen). You also don't need to oil connecting rods on all locos. Your loco in this video for example, the connecting rod is just screwed into the surface of the wheel, its not actually moving independently of the wheel, so there is no friction and no need to oil it.
