Some people use pinky fingers just for shift keys. So do we need these fingers for typing?

When I was taught to type the keyboard was covered. Firstly your brain thinks in letters and then finally in words. I can “touch type” but would be unable to say where the letters are.

Yes correct. You can feel the letter "F" and "J" then position the rest of the fingers. You dont have to look at the keyboard. Keep your eye on the monitor. Is that hard?
